Va. Tech Kicker Cody Journell has been reinstated to the football team. Tech's proposed indoor practice facility, which would wipe out 5 acres of the nearly 14 acres "Stadium Woods" (between Lane & the SolarHaus) took a major hit. A study found nearly 4000 trees there, including nearly 60 white oaks which may be between 300 and 450 years old, which are est. to remove 608 tons of carbon dioxide and 1 ton of pollution annually from the environment, with an ecological value of just more than $5 million. More talks to come. Tech will host Liberty in 2016 (the Flames will play @ WVU in 2015). According to WDBJ, Coach Beamer lost over 30 pounds in the off-season. UVA Work has begun on the 'Hoos new $13 million, 78,000 square foot indoor practice facility at one of the practice fields behind the McCue Center and U-Hall, with a targeted opening date of next Spring. Soph. QB Phillip Sims, who transfered in from Alabama, got an NCAA waiver and WILL be eligible this season; he has 3 years of eligibility left. QB Ross Metheny, who earned his degree in just 3 years, has transfered to South Alabama (Sun Belt). He has 2 more years of eligibility, since he's persuing a Masters Degree. Because of a Bowl ban on UCF, the Jags could go bowling in their 1st year as an FBS program. GAME GO-ERS... Remember - the Penn St. PLAYERS had NOTHING to do with what's happened. Maryland The Terps have laid out artificial turf at Byrd Stadium, which should draw more HS games (good for recruiting). Their FieldTurf Revolution includes a new technology known as "CoolPlay" that will keep the field up to 15 degrees cooler. Duke The Devils' roster includes a home-schooled walk-on who's NEVER played football before - Hud Mellencamp. Wonder when somebody will get around to setting hum up with Jessica Springsteen ??? ACC After the new playoff plan was announced, the ACC signed a 12-year deal to continue sending their chump, errrrr, CHAMP, to the Orange Bowl (although, for the LIFE of me, I don't know why -the ACC has just 2 wins in the past 14 games). The GOOD thing from this is the return of the game to 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day. With Pitt & the 'Cuse headed over from the Big East, the ACC & ESPN reworked their contract back in the Spring. The new deal runs thru 2027 and increases each teams take from just under $13 million per year to just over $17 Mil. Unfortunately, it also gives ESPN the right to THREE Friday night games yearly, with BC & the 'Cuse each hosting one, and the third could be anywhere on the day after Thanksgiving. (After the deal, we found out they will make the move NEXT year instead of the year after.) SEC Adds Missouri to the EAST & Texas A&M to the West LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu, a Heisman Trophy finalist last year, is no longer on the team after violating team and school rules. WVU Makes the move from the Big East to the Big 12, which also added TCU from the Mountain West. Gave Dana Holgorsen a six-year contract ... he gets $2.3 Mil. this season. BCS The BCS will kick the bucket after 2 more years, to be replaced by a 4-team "playoff", with the teams picked by a selection committee, based on record, SoS, head-to-head results and conference results. That committee will also help in making the pairings of the bowls that are skipped that year, as the semi-finals will be rotated among 6 bowls and will be played on 12/31 and 1/1. The title game will go to the highest bidder and will be played on the first Monday in January that is at least six days after the last semifinal. The first "Championship Monday" will be Jan. 12, 2015. Richmond The Spiders inducted former Martinsville head coach Dick Hensley into their Hall of Fame in Feb. Hensley, who earned three letters while at the U of R, led the Bulldogs to a 101-40-1 record in 13 years (1969-81) and 3 trips to the state finals, winning the AA title in 1975. Liberty U. The Flames are looking to move it's fb program from FCS (1-AA) to FBS (1-A), but have no timetable. They've toughened their schedule by adding WVU in 2015 & Va. Tech in 2016. Ferrum The Panthers recently added a few locker rooms and coaches offices in their new, %5.5 mil. Hank Norton Athletic Center. Mid-South Another year, another realignment. Lindsey Wilson, which debuted last year in the East, moves to the West. Campbellsville also moves from East to West, as they trade places with Cumberlands (KY) & Union. The East lost WVU Tech (which dropped football), while the West lost Shorter to the Gulf South Conf. (Div. II) The West picks up Bluefield College, which played a "club" schedule last year. UVA-Wise The Cavs, as well as fellow Mid-South school Georgetown [Ky.] College, have begun the three-year process for membership in the NCAA's Division II, where they'll be a member of the new Great Midwest Athletic Conference (HQ'd in Indianapolis), which will debut next Fall with members Ky. Wesleyan Col. (Owensboro), Trevecca Nazarene U. (Nashville), and four Ohio schools - Cedarville U., Central State U. (Wilberforce), Urbana U. and Ursuline Col. (Pepper Pike). Wise & G'town will be in the G-MAC next Fall as probationary members for one year, and both will be ineligible for Div. II post-season play for two seasons (until the Fall of 2015). U-Pike The Bears have new Nike uniforms Bluefield College The Rams play an "official" schedule this year, after resurrecting the program last year as a "club" team. ODAC Welcomes Shenandoah University of Winchester, Va. from USA South. Alderson-Broaddus College The WV school added football back in the Spring. They're playing an independent schedule this season and will join the WVIAC next Summer. Carson-Newman Head coach Ken Sparks, the all-time wins leader in NCAA's Division II with 299 (in 32 seasons), recently had surgery for prostate cancer. He was recently quoted as saying, "I'm scheduled for radiation starting in December after we win the national championship game." Gotta love'im. Conference USA Looking ahead, the'll make some big changes next Summer, losing Houston, Central Florida, Memphis & SMU to the Big East, and adding (UNC-)Charlotte, Florida Int'l, North Texas, La. Tech, Old Dominion and Texas-San Antonio. Colonial Athletic Association U. Mass. has left for the MAC, and Georgia State is taking their place. Next Summer, Georgia State will return to the Sun Belt, ODU will move up to Conference USA, and Rhode Island will downgrade to the Northeast Conference - although that may change, because the CAA recently said that they'll add Stony Brook (Big South) & Albany (Northeast) as "footballl only" schools. Sports Illustrated has an article on the off-season moves.
