2011 weekly schedules

Pick a Friday :   scrims & Aug. 19 O-o-S       Aug. 26       Sept. 2       Sept. 9       Sept. 16       Sept. 23

                          Sept. 30         Oct. 7       Oct. 14       Oct. 21       Oct. 28       Nov. 4       Nov. 11 +

         - - - understanding my weekly schedule page lay-out - - -

I start by making the schedule for Region D, then C, then IV, so if a
Region C school plays a Region IV school (like Radford vs. Pulaski),
it will ONLY be listed in the Region C section, since I did those first
(game location doesn't matter). This is followed by games of other
Va. teams (in CAPS) which give bonus points to a Region IV, D or C school,
then the out-of-state schools (in CAPS) that give bonus points to teams in
Regions IV, D or C, so some games have BOTH teams in CAPS (like PHELPS vs.
East Ridge). Sometimes you'll see a game with no team in caps - these are
other teams from my neighboring counties of McDowell (WV) & Pike (KY)
that I keep up with for my game-night scoreboard (which can be heard at
10:30 & 11:05 at wgth.net), or other games of interest. I don't post the
final scores, since I can't guarantee their accuracy on Friday nights.

    * means the team is a private school and doesn't count in the ratings.

   (1) means the game is "special" ... look for details down the page.

Regional and "important" college games & NFL games in which former locals
will be playing are listed at the bottom.

I also note homecoming games and schedule changes as I find out about them
(since VA has a history of Fall weather wackiness), so the "down-the-road"
pages are usually updated weekly, and the "current" week page is updated as
needed (sometimes nightly). I also add state rankings whenever possible.

ALWAYS check if you plan to attend a game. I do NOT check with the schools
for changes, but I do regularly check newspaper site, message boards and a few
school web sites. (Ky. & Tenn. are notorious to move games to Thur. night when
a teachers' in-service day is scheduled for a Friday.)

Now, a note about the North Carolina teams : NC does 2 things that's a bit
"foreign" to us. First, when a large town / city has more than 1 school,
they'll add the city before the school name, like (Greensboro) Grimsley and
(Winston-Salem) Atkins. 2nd, when a school name is used more than once in
the state, they'll add the city before the school name. So A.C. Reynolds in
Asheville usually becomes Asheville Reynolds & R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem
usually becomes W.S. Reynolds. Also, for some reason, John Morehead in Eden
is commonly called (Eden) Morehead.

      - - - interesting 2011 schedule tidbits - - -

   I

apoligize this is so late getting posted, but I was (foolishly) waiting
for the VHSL to post an updated, correct master schedule. Yet here we are,
at the end of Sept., with a week-old update that FINALLY has the out-of-state
games listed, but STILL has errors, including some for games that were already
played... Central of Wise did NOT start the season with 4 road games and
Grundy had a home this month vs. Haysi.

So, without any further ado, and with some mistakes still possible, here's
some of the interesting things I've found...
(Oh, and the schedule info is for the ORIGINAL schedules, which some Eastern
schools have had to alter due to the wet, wet weather systems they've seen.)

A review of the out-of-state games scheduled for this year show...

Thomas Walker once again plays ZERO O-o-S games.

Sherando is the only school playing FOUR O-o-S games this year - all against
WV schools; and that's as many as all of Regions I, III & IV combined.

Only three schools play three O-o-S teams - Twin Valley, Gate City
and Central (J.J. Kelly/Pound).

AA's Northwestern District has an incredible ELEVEN O-o-S games. Group A's
Black Diamond District has 8, the Lonesome Pine & Pioneer have 6, the Clinch Mtn.
has 5, and the Mtn. Empire, Cumberland, and AAA's Western Valley have 4.

On the other side of the coin, the Montcalm (WV) Generals plays FIVE Va. schools
(along with a Ky. school).

Ervinton is AGIAN the first team in the state that will finish district play,
wrapping it up on Oct. 21st. That's the same night as the FIRST district game
for Northampton, which has 2 District games against Arcadia the following week.
(Yes, that's right.)

Twelve teams across the state will wrap-up their regular-season on Oct. 28th -
Bayside, Battlefield, Osbourn, both Park Views (South Hill & Sterling), Fluvanna,
Brookville, Altavista, West Point, Madison Co., Castlewood and Eastside (Coeburn).
Meanwhile, only EIGHT teams in the state are open that night.

Va. High has 6 weeks between their 1st (9/2) and 2nd (10/14) district game.

Their are SEVEN District games in week 1... six in the Tidewater area plus
Grundy @ Twin Valley.

Grundy is the only school in the state that'll play half of their District
games by mid-Sept. Thomas Walker 9/23

Grundy plays half of their District games by Sept. 16, Thomas Walker by 9/23.

It looks Louisa Co. (AA) & Manassas Park (A) are the only teams that ended up
with just nine games this year. (Bluestone only had 9 to start the season, but
picked up a 10th when Louisa Co. cancelled their opener against Eastern View.)

But that doesn't mean finding 10 games was easy... some schools scheduled the
same opponent twice. The why-wait-til-next-year rematches are : Surry-Franklin,
Mathews-Middlesex, Greensville-Park View AND Park View-Southampton, Brunswick-
Kettle Run, Harrisonburg-Turner Ashby, Heritage-E.C. Glass, L.C. Bird-Thomas Dale
(which is Bird's only non-district opponent), and Arcadia & Northampton, whose
games are just FOUR DAYS APART.

When Rappahannock Co. (Region B) decided to cancel their season in early
August due to a low turnout, 8 more VHSL teams found themselves short a game.
Central (Woodstock) and Clarke County & Strasburg and Madison County decided to
play each other a 2nd time. William Monroe & Nelson Co. turned their Aug. 26th
scrimmage into a regular season game. George Mason found a Pennsylvania school
to play, and Manassas Park was stuck with just 9 games.

Some just-across-the-border schools also ended up a game short...
Harlan, Hazard, East Ridge & Pike Co. Central in KY and Bluefield, WV.

There are currently 128 AAA teams (2 more than 2 years ago), 84 AA teams
(down 9) & 93 A teams (up 3) for a total of 304 teams (down 5).

Overall, there are 469 District games in AAA, 246 in AA and 235 in A for
a total of 950 District contests. There are 529 non-district games, 67 games
against OoS teams and 13 games against non-VHSL schools, for a grand total of
.... 1,559 games this season.

Who has the toughest schedule? Well, no one knows before-hand how a
certain team will fare, so let's go by last year's success...

AAA's Broad Run plays FOUR Regional champs from last year...
Div. 4 champ Briar Woods, Div. 5 runner-up Stone Bridge, Div. 5 Osbourn &
Div. 6 champ Battlefield

A's Gate City ALSO plays FOUR state semi-finalists from last year...
Div. 1 Clintwood, Div. 4 runner-up Richlands, KY 5A Harlan Co. & WV 2A Bluefield

Freedom (Loudoun Co.) plays 2 state champs in consecutive weeks...
at Div. 6 champ Battlefield on 10/14 then Div. 4 champ Briar Woods at home
on 10/21 (they go to Div. 5 semi-finalist Osbourn the NEXT week)

A number of other schools play 3 defending Regional champs...

Pulaski Co. : Div. 2 Radford, Div. 4 Christiansburg & Div. 4 runner-up Richlands
(The Cougars also had pre-season meetings w/ Div. 2 champ Gate City & WV 2A
semi-finalist Bluefield)

Floyd Co. : Div. 2 Radford, Div. 4 C'burg & Div. 1 runner-up East. Mont. (ALL at Home)

Giles : Div. 2 Radford, Div. 4 C'burg & Div. 1 runner-up East. Mont. (ALL Away)

Lee - Div. 1 Clintwood, Div. 2 champ Gate City & KY 5A Harlan Co.

Union - Div. 1 Clintwood, Div. 2 champ Gate City & Div. 4 runner-up Richlands

other interesting tidbits from the VHSL master schedule

                                Group AAA

Richmond's very-small AAA George Wythe and William Campbell no longer play,
so George Mason-JEB Stuart is the only A-AAA VHSL matchup in the state.

Monacan, Battlefield & GW-Danville's last home game is 10/14.

Thomas Edison is the only AAA team whose schedules alternate home-away.

games in consecutive weeks)

   Div. 6 Westfield only plays 1 non-Div. 6 school.

Div. 5 Falls Church only plays 1 non-Div. 5 school.

Caroline, King George, Jamestown & Rustburg's schedules alternate home-away

Monticello has 7 home games in an 8 week span... 9/2 - 10/21

(it's also H'burg's only home game after 9/30)

Marion's last away game is 10/14

Brunswick & Southampton play at least one game against Division 1-5 schools

Magna Vista & Sherando plays 3 games vs. AAA teams

Marion plays all SIX non-district games vs. Group A teams

Region II schools play 14 of the 27 games vs. WV teams

Harrisonburg has a stretch of 6 weeks between road games ... 8/26 - 10/7
Brentsville District's stretch of 6 weeks is 9/2 - 10/14

Broadway, Spotswood & Tunstall have a stretch of 5 weeks between home games is 9/2 - 10/7
   Charlottesville & William Byrd's stretch of 5 weeks is 9/9 - 10/14

                                   Group A

While George Mason is in the only A-AAA VHSL matchup, Bristol's Va. High
also has a AAA opponent in cross-town rival Tennessee High.

      Arcadia's 1st Home game is 9/24.

King & Queen, Bluestone, Mathews & Wilson Memorial's 1st Away game is 9/23.
Nelson County's is Oct. 7th! (They have 7 home games this year)

      Craig Co. has a 6-week stretch between Away games (9/2 - 10/14)
Clarke Co., Northwood, Fort Chiswell & Union all have a 6-week stretch between Home games

Central of Woodstock's last Home game is 10/7.
Nandua doesn't play their 2nd Home game until 10/16.

Amelia is the only A team whose schedule alternates Home-Away with no open week.
Rural Retreat's alternates but they have an open week in the middle.
Nottoway's & Honaker's WOULD alternate if the open date counted as either a Home
or an Away (in other words, they don't play Home or Away games in consecutive weeks)

Gate City has a 5-week stretch where they only play 1 Va. team - Lebanon

Graham opens with 5 AA opponents - 2 are from WV

Twin Valley has NO home games in October

About a dozen Region B, Div. 2 schools play no Div. 1 teams

King & Queen Central, Middlesex, Surry, Holston & Rye Cove only plays 1 Div. 2 team
Northwood plays NO Div. 2 teams but does play a Div. 3 team

Parry McCluer has the most "varied" schedule... they play a AA school,
an out-of-state school and a non-VHSL school. Hurley plays a non-VHSL school
and an out-of-state AA school.
