#1-W Galax Maroon Tide (14-1) 28 #1-E Goochland Bulldogs (14-1) 16
(I THINK the undefeated, #1 seeds are the Home teams)
|
Tide's game-winning TD pass w/:00 left was knocked down near the goal line
1st-ever finals between 2 SW VA teams
Clintwood : lost 28-20 to Franklin in the 08 finals & 28-19 to Buffalo Gap in the 07 finals won 3 titles in 4 tries in the 70's... 2 of their victims no longer exist
15th time in the past 20 years a Lonesome Pine team has made the Div. 1 finals... they won 4 of the first 5, but were 0-9 since Appalachia's win over Surry in 1997 |
Bulldog Colby Cooke kicked a "state" (semis/finals) record 51-yard FG
4th playoff meeting in 6 years, although the other 3 were Regional encounters... Goochland won in 06, Gretna in 07 & 08 - the winner then won Div. 2 all 3 years
Bulldogs : scored at least 40 pts. TEN times both coaches played for Norm Linenburg at Radford... Kevin Saunders was Joe(y) Fowler's JV coach
|
|
Brookville was the only team to finish undefeated... Soph. Alan Gutierrez won it with a 27/28 yard FG w/:35 left JM had never trailed by more than 7 this season until the 1st Q, scored 3 TDs in 200 seconds around halftime, and COULD'VE won it w/a last-play safety after getting picked at the 1, but an offsides & TWO personal fouls moved the ball out to the 37; JM won the oh-so-important time-of-possession battle 31:30 to 16:30 JM finished 2nd in the state in scoring margin (489) & 1st in points (669) despite playing 1 less game than Galax
3rd time WAS the charm for Brookville...
Bees had only allowed 9.5 ppg gave up more points in 4 post-season games (81) than 10 reg. season games (76)
|
4th straight year a Dulles District team from Ashburn wins Div. 4 Demons game-tying 2-pt. conv. pass w/2:04 left was picked off
6-year-old Falcons won state last year over a different Blue team... the Streaks of Harrisonburg
Blue Demons had been 0-3 in the semis; avg. 37 ppg;
|
|
Romond Deloatch had 4 catches for 152 yards & 2 TDs 7th-year Stallions 1st final; opened the season w/ 3 losses
Phantoms have won 27 of their past 28 playoff games, inc. 20 straight... have won 7 of the past 11 titles... 2001, 02, 06 & 08-11 were runners-up in 07 & 87
|
Should the Div. 6 finals be moved to "The Jungle" over in Louisa County ??? Last year's contest featured Bobcats and Panthers
Something had to give here, folks... Tigers 5-8 Sr. QB J.J. Williamson finished w/ 38 TDs and 3,062 yards, compared to last years' 36 and 3,244
