2010 weekly schedules

Pick a Friday :   scrims & Aug. 20 O-o-S       Aug. 27       Sept. 3       Sept. 10       Sept. 17       Sept. 24

                          Oct. 1         Oct. 8       Oct. 15       Oct. 22       Oct. 29       Nov. 5       Nov. 12 +

         - - - understanding my weekly schedule page lay-out - - -

I start by making the schedule for Region IV, then D, then III, then C.
So, if a Region C school plays a Region IV school (like Radford vs. Pulaski),
it will ONLY be listed in the Region IV section, since I did those first
(game location doesn't matter). This is followed by games of other
Va. teams (in CAPS) which give bonus points to a Region IV, D or C school,
then the out-of-state schools (in CAPS) that give bonus points to teams in
Regions C, D or IV, so some games have BOTH teams in CAPS (like PHELPS vs.
JENKINS). Sometimes you'll see a game with no team in caps - these are
other teams from my neighboring counties of McDowell (WV) & Pike (KY)
that I keep up with for my game-night scoreboard (which can be heard at
10:30 & 11:05 at wgth.net), but I don't post the final scores, since I
can't guarantee their accuracy on Friday nights.

    * means the team is a private school and doesn't count in the ratings.

   (1) means the game is "special" ... look for details down the page.

Regional college games, "important" college games & NFL games in which
former locals will be playing are listed at the bottom (isn't included
since .

I also note homecoming games and schedule changes as I find out about them
(since VA has a history of Fall weather wackiness), so the "down-the-road"
pages are usually updated weekly, and the "current" week page is updated as
needed (sometimes nightly). I also add state rankings whenever possible.

ALWAYS check if you plan to attend a game. I do NOT check with the schools
for changes, but I do regularly check newspapers, msg. boards and a few school
web sites. (Ky. & Tenn. are notorious to move games to Thur. night when a
teachers' in-service day is scheduled for a Friday.)

Now, a note about the North Carolina teams : NC does 2 things that's a bit
"foreign" to us. First, when a large town / city has more than 1 school,
they'll add the city before the school name, like (Greensboro) Grimsley and
(Winston-Salem) Atkins. 2nd, when a school name is used more than once in
the state, they'll add the city before the school name. So A.C. Reynolds in
Asheville usually becomes Asheville Reynolds & R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem
usually becomes W.S. Reynolds. Also, for some reason, John Morehead in Eden
is commonly called (Eden) Morehead.

      - - - interesting 2010 schedule tidbits - - -

As usual, the VHSL still has some problems on their master schedule. I've
noted those games with ?? for the time being.

KY & TN begin their regular seasons a week before VA does.
The first game that counts in the ratings will be played in Kingsport on
Thursday the 19th as Sullivan North hosts Central (yeah, it's race weekend).

The first VHSL game will be Thursday the 26th when Lynchburg's E.C. Glass
plays Franklin Co. in Rocky Mount.

Almost all of the SW VA teams open on the 27th. Pound opens on Saturday the
28th, while Abingdon, Haysi, Glenvar and Salem don't open until Sept. 3rd.

A couple of the more interesting opening weekend games include the annual
Beaver-Graham game, which will be getting some attention from ESPN, and the
recently-renewed Radford-Pulaski Co. game in Dublin. The Cougars had some problems
over the Summer which led to the hiring of a new coach, alum Todd Jones from Essex.
Back in December, Jones led the undefeated Trojans to their 1st state title in a
30-0 whitewashing of .... Radford.

Just over the mtn. (from me), a "View-off" will take place as the new Bradshaw
school, River View, battles county-rival Mount View. Unfortunately, the game
has been moved to Welch since RV's new stadium isn't finished.

Chesapeakes' Oscar Smith has replaced Venice High from Fla. with Pickerington
Central from Ohio (I pity their play-by-play guy). They'll play on Labor Day in
the "Horseshoe" at Ohio State as part of the Kirk Herbstreit Classic. ESPN will
televise the game at either 3:30 or 4:00.

A review of the out-of-state games scheduled for this year show...

Thomas Walker again plays ZERO O-o-S games.

Nobody plays FOUR O-o-S games this year ... Hurley dropped their Mingo Co.
opponent on 9/11, as did Grundy, to play each other at the Cliff. (Twin Valley
did likewise and is open that night. Guess where they'll be???)

A number of schools play THREE O-o-S teams, including GW-Danville
(all Div. 6 teams from NC), Sherando, James Wood, East Rockingham and
Bath Co. (all from WV), Lee (all from KY), Hurley and Twin Valley.

Graham, Ervinton, Clintwood, Pound and Va. High all play 2 O-o-S teams.

(And rumors are flying about the possible making of a movie in Clintwood
this Fall... "Return of the Valley of the Schools". Once again, the Greenwave
will play Happy, Powell and Shelby in a 4-week stretch.)

AA's Dulles District has TEN O-o-S games and the Northwestern District has 6.

A's Black Diamond & Clinch Mtn. Districts both have 7 O-o-S games, the
Lonesome Pine has 5 and the Cumberland has 3.

The first district games in SW VA this year will be Sept. 3rd, with five
contests scheduled in Region D. Region C teams don't begin district play
until Oct. 8th, with the exception of the Northwood @ Chilhowie game,
which has been moved from mid-October to Sept. 24th.

Ervinton is the first team in the state that will finish district play,
wrapping it up on Oct. 22nd. That's the same night that Haysi and Hurley
play their FIRST district game, which happens to be the latest district opener.

Ten teams across the state will wrap-up their regular-season on Oct. 29th,
including Gate City, Bland Co., Tazewell, Tunstall, Lord Botetourt & EC Glass.

All three SW VA Regions wrap up regular-season play on Nov. 5th, with one
exception - Lee @ Thomas Walker will be the only regular-season contest played
west of Lynchburg on Nov. 12th (unless a make-up game is needed).

The weirdest schedule probably belongs to Nandua. The Warriors open on 8/27
with two straight district games, followed by six straight non-district games,
back-to-back byes, then they close out with two more district games, so that's
NINE weeks between district games.

It looks like AAA's Petersburg is the only team that ended up with just nine
games this year, but that could change, depending on a yet-resolved scheduling
question that involves a couple of Norfolk schools.

There are currently 126 AAA teams, 93 AA teams & 90 A teams for a total of
309 teams.

Overall, there are 454 District games in AAA, 272 in AA and 206 in A for
a total of 932 District contests. There are 565 non-district games, 72 games
against OoS teams and 20 games against non-VHSL schools, for a grand total of
.... 1,589 games this season.

The Generals dropped their AA opponent from DC and added a AAA school from Richmond.

George Mason plays a Div. 5 and a Div. 1 in consecutive weeks.

Amelia Co. (Div. 1) plays Div. 5 George Wythe in Richmond on 10/1.
