Tidbits come from newspapers, message boards and my archives/files Region II expands from 6 to 8 teams AAA's Northwest Region "re-seeds", so the #1 seed hosts the lowest remaining seed in the 2nd round / Regional semis. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Winning at multiple levels (expanded from 2009) Chris Jones became at least the 3rd head coach to win a VHSL playoff game in all Groups : Bath Co. (2000,1**), Heritage (2002**,3,7) & Franklin Co. (2009) Who else has accomplished this tri-fecta? Larry Smith : Honaker (1977*), Abingdon (1984) & Halifax Co. (1991**) [none at Lebanon] Mickey Crouch : Altavista (1989), Amherst Co. (1995**) & Amherst Co. (1998*) Crouch also led Liberty Christian to the Va. Ind. School Div. II title in 2004, and put Eden Morehead in the NC 3-A playoffs 2005. (* Regional champs ** state champs) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Winning at multiple schools (new for 2010) So, that leads us to... what coach has won playoff games at the most schools? We already know that Smith & Jones did at 3 VHSL schools, and Crouch did at 3 Va. schools and 3 public schools, so I started with guys who were coaches at 4 or more VHSL schools, starting in 1970, and had or have at least 100 wins (the Newport News Daily Press has this info). And it didn't take long. May I present... Paul Wheeler. The Beckley, WV native was one of Joel Hicks' Flying Eagles at Woodrow Wilson in the early 70's before playing for Marshall U. He was an asst. at Shady Spring (WV) for 2 years before heading down I-77 to Wythe Co., where he led the George Wythe Maroons to the 1983 AA title game, which they lost to the defending state champion Couurtland Cougars 14-7. He then went down 81 to Bristol, where his Bearcats won the 1987 Region IV, Div. 4 crown. Then it was up 81 and over to Rustburg, where the Red Devils picked up the Div. 3 title in 1990 AND the Div. 4 title in 1993. After a few years as an asst. at Pulaski Co. (to Hicks) and down in Georgia, he ended up in Williamsburg, where his Lafayette Rams claimed the Div. 4 crown in 2001. He's the only 4-schooler I found. Maybe, someday, I'll go through the list and see who to keep an eye on, like Mike Scharnus, who led 4 schools to the post-season, but didn't get a win at Carroll County (89, 90) or Liberty (95). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Gate City - Radford history Radford : Reg.
