------- Notes ------
This page will be updated regularly throughout the season as broadcast
arrangements are announced, but the updates won't be mentioned on the front page.
Va. Tech
The Hokies start the season ranked #10 in the AP poll and opens against 3rd ranked
Boise State on Labor Day night in Landover. ESPN will show the game in 3-D.
AD Jim Weaver proved he's no fool. Just after he extended Beamer’s contract by
4 years, he announced that he'll retire when his contract expires, which just happens
to be a year BEFORE Beamer's does. He'll let someone else deal with Bud & Stiney
(and Shayne?) in the hiring process.
Tech only has ONE Thursday night ESPN game this year.
ACC
The league's championship game moves to Charlotte. Tickets start at $25.
http://www.accfootballcharlotte.com
The league has signed deals with 8 Bowls for the next 4 years; they've added the Sun
and Independence Bowls and dropped the Gator. The new pecking (or picking) order is...
Orange/BCS, Chick-fil-A, Champs, Sun, Meineke, Music City, Independence & Eagle Bank.
(And if a 9th team is eligible, and the Emerald [Nut] Bowl needs a fill-in, hello,
San Francisco. No? OK... the Walnut Diamond Bowl? No? Oh... it's now the Kraft
Fight Hunger Bowl, on Jan. 9th !!!)
There's a new saying in the ACC this year... I love my football and I like it loud !

WVU
Once agsin, the 'Eers have a couple of Friday night ESPN games, including one
away on Halloween-weekend.
Tenn.
Tyler Page, a HOME-SCHOOLED QB from the National Assoc. of Christian Athletes
Division I football champion Asheville (NC) Saints, has earned a roster spot.
The “Vol Walk” has been returned to 2 & 1/4 hours before kickoff.
App. State
After playing exclusively in the Carolinas last season, the 'Eers will go to
FOUR different states this year.
Mid-South
Another realignment moves the Univ. of the Cumberlands & Union from the East
to the West, and Ky. Wesleyen moves from the West to the East. Lindsey Wilson
adds football and joins the East; Lambuth leaves the West (and the MSC) as they
migrate into Div. 2.
UVa-Wise
The Highland Cavaliers now have a new logo.
(copyright infringement from their "parent"??? Wow!!!)
The Cavs have claimed former Browns & Redskins Safety Justin Hamilton
(from Clintwood) off waivers to be their strength & conditioning coach.
(hmmm, might I get into trouble for that "Browns & Redskins" part?)
Homecoming is the first Sat. in October again (how'da do dat?).
Pikeville College
Da Bears go from THREE Thursday night games last year to ZERO.
Lindsey Wilson Col.
The Blue Raiders are fielding a team for the first time since their 1930
club team, and they open Sept. 4th against... Notre Dame (College of Ohio).
Their QB is Ricky Bowling, who shares the KY HS record for most career
TD passes (133) with some game named Tim Couch.
Bluefield College
The Rams will return to the field next Fall for the first time since the
"Ramblin' Reds" beat Rio Grande College 30-7 back in 1941 to finish 4-4.
They'll field a club team in 2011 and join the Mid-South in 2012.
Big South
Liberty has been picked to win their fourth consecutive crown.
The fledgling football conference finally gets an automatic berth into the FCS playoffs.
UNC-Charlotte
The 49ers will officially field a football team in the fall of 2013.
The new stadium will be built on campus, closest to the Highway 29 entrance.
A field house & 15,000 seat stadium (which can be expanded to 40,000)
are planned at a cost of $40.5 Mil.
William & Mary
Back in 2006, the NCAA told W & M that their Indian feathers logo was "hostile and
abusive" and had to go, but they could keep the "Tribe" nickname, Around that same time,
they decided to retire Colonel Ebirt (Col. Siskul had already passed by then). Last year,
they took suggestions for a new mascot. One of the favorites was the Wren, since their
Wren Building is touted as the nation's oldest continuously used academic structure.
Also submitted (and quickly eliminated) was an asparagus stalk topped with cheese (which
could work when your school colors are green & gold). Still, that's a bit of a stretch
when compared to the Ragin' Cajuns' of LA-Lafayette... they have a costumed chili pepper
named Cayenne as a mascot (personally, I woulda went with Flea). But at least it's
somewhat identifiable, unlike the Western Ky. Hilltoppers' Big Red, who somehow became
a big star in Italy a few years ago, and his illegitimate cousin, Radford's Rowdy Red
(from back in the 90's).
Anyway, a new mascot has been chosen and the winner is... the Griffin.
(I hope it didn't belong to Robert Louis Stevenson.)
Bowls
The NCAA approved TWO MORE bowl games for this year, bringing the number to 35!!
The Pinstripe Bowl will be played at... where else? ... Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30th,
between a Big East and a Big 12 team. The last bowl games in the Bronx were the 1961
& 1962 Gotham Bowls at Yankee Stadium.
Now, try and stay with me on this, since it's a Texas-sized mess.
The Cotton Bowl (game) is no longer at the Cotton Bowl (stadium).
The Cotton Bowl Classic is moving to the Cowboys new stadium over in Arlington.
So the Dallas stadium created a replacement game - the Dallas Football Classic.
This New Year's Day addition will see a Big Ten team play a team from either the
Big 12 or Conference USA (they'll alternate bids) on ESPNU.
The International Bowl in Toronto no longer exists.
ESPN now "owns" the BCS bowl telecasts. As a matter of fact, they pretty much
control all of 'em, with 29 of the 35 on ESPN, 2 on ESPN2, 1 on ESPNU and 1 on ABC,
leaving just the Cotton (Fox) & the Sun (CBS) outside of Disney-land.
