VHSL-helper's 2009 playoffs using the 2010 proposal - part 2

I need to clarify AND add some stuff that wasn't on page 1.

First, the page name says "2010 proposaL", and that might be a little confusing. I called it that because it was passed by the Group A board and submitted to the state in 2010. However, it WON'T be used for the 2010 season, but will go into effect at the start of school in the Fall of 2011.

Second, I mentioned that the "Regionals" would be eliminated. I forgot to say that the new name would be "Sectionals".

Third, the state semis may or may not be cross-bracketed. The Executive Committee allows the Group to make that decision, and I don't know what that will be.

Fourth, District champs would no longer get an automatic bid. On the surface, that sounds minor, since 64 teams (or over two-thirds) get in. But guess what?? Nandua & Northampton both went 3-1 in the Eastern Shore District, and 0-6 in non-district play. Nandua had a higher rating, 13.1 to 12.8, but would've missed the playoffs either way Region B got split.

Fifth, I should've mentioned that the Gaston Gazette article said NC teams could've reduced travel by 6,309 miles in the first round last year by going from two 16-team sectionals to four 8-team pods. With 8 Divisions, that's about 800 miles less in each one.

Finally, I contradicted myself a bit on the Region B split. When I was doing this, I was thinking about how 2009 would've looked if this proposal had been introduced a couple of years ago, and decided to move the Shenandoah teams because it created a slightly better balance. While the proposal doesn't say who gets moved, Group A has apparently already decided that the Dogwood will go to the West in Div. 2 (more on that way down the page).

Therefore, I re-did Div. 2, moving the Shenandoah to the East and the Dogwood to the West, giving the East 22 teams & the West 16 (meaning Chatham would've been in even if they had gone 0-10. This also dropped Riverheads from the West #2 seed to #5 in the East).

How about those Round 2 West games? Giles @ Gate City? Thurman @ Gretna? WOW!!! Gretna could've hosted THREE Clinch Mtn. teams... but where? With FOUR Clinch Mtn. teams (Lee, Va. High, Battle & Gate City) matching up against FOUR Dogwood teams (Gretna, Dan River Appo & Chatham) in Round 1, WHERE (and how) would all of these games have been played? Bland Co., Northwood, Pulaski & Blacksburg were done for the year; Rural Retreat & Narrows were likely done. How about artificial turf fields? It just so happened that Salem AND Bogle were free that weekend, and could've hosted another game the following weekend. And when would Lebanon have made it home from Essex or Gretna ?

Using the Sept, 2009 ADM numbers to project 2011, Div. 1 will only have 5 more schools than Div. 2 ... 51 to 46.
IF the Wise County schools consolidate, Div. 1 will lose five and Div. 2 will add two, making Div. 2 the larger one, 48 to 46.
It's also possible that some schools may end up in a different Division if their ADM changes enough from 9/30/09 to 3/31/11.

      currently if Wise Co. consolidates

  Region A B C D A B C D
Div. 2 7 26 7 6 = 46 7 26 7 8 = 48
Div. 1 14 4 16 17 = 51 14 4 16 12 = 46

if the Pioneer & Three Rivers move to the East in Div. 1 :

               East West East West
Div. 1 18+7 = 25 17+9 = 26 18+7 = 25 12+9 = 21

in Div. 2, let's move a Region B district to the West :

Dogwood 7+21 = 28 13+5 = 18 7+21 = 28 15+5 = 20

Shenandoah 7+18 = 25 13+8 = 21 7+18 = 25 15+8 = 23
(like I said before, this produces more balanced numbers)

schools most likely to be in a different Division in 2011 :

Northampton 497 A
                            Lunenburg 471
Riverheads 491 B Cumberland 463

Fort Chiswell 494 C George Wythe 471
James River 480
                      D Grundy 468
                            JJ Kelly 468
