playoffs
These schedules are as accurate as I can get them right now,
but some questions STILL exist that may take a while to iron out.
Games with ??? or WHERE are NOT confirmed by the schedules of
BOTH schools (meaning a discrepency exists between them)...
those are listed the way I think they'll end up being played.
- - - understanding my weekly schedule page lay-out - - -
I start by making the schedule for Region IV, then D, then III, then C.
So, if a Region C school plays a Region IV school (like Battle vs. Abingdon),
it will ONLY be listed in the Region IV section, since I did those first
(game location doesn't matter).
This is followed by games of other Va. teams which give bonus points to a
Region IV, D or C school.
Next is the out-of-state section. Schools listed in CAPS are the ones that
give bonus points to teams in Regions C, D or IV, so some games have BOTH teams
in CAPS (like Big Creek vs. Montcalm). Sometimes you'll see a game with no team
in caps - these are other teams that I keep up with for my game-night scoreboard
from my neighboring counties of Pike (KY) & McDowell (WV).
* means the team is a private school and doesn't count in the ratings.
Regional college games, "important" college games & NFL games in which
former locals will be playing are listed at the bottom.
I also note homecoming games and schedule changes as I find out about them
(since VA has a history of Fall weather wackiness), so the "down-the-road"
pages are usually updated weekly, and the "current" week page is updated as
needed (sometimes nightly).
ALWAYS check if you plan to attend a game. I do NOT check with the schools
for changes, but I do regularly check newspapers, msg. boards and a few school
web sites. (Ky. & Tenn. are notorious to move games to Thur. night when a
teachers' in-service day is scheduled for a Friday.)
Now, a note about the North Carolina teams : NC does 2 things that's a bit
"foreign" to us. First, when a large town / city has more than 1 school,
they'll add the city before the school name, like (Greensboro) Grimsley and
(Winston-Salem) Atkins. 2nd, when a school name is used more than once in the
state, they'll add the city before the school name. So while A.C. Reynolds in
Asheville stays A.C. Reynolds, R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem can be called
EITHER R.J. Reynolds OR W.S. Reynolds. T.W. Andrews in High Point is usually
called HP Andrews, so I've put them in my weekly listings as T.W. (HP) Andrews,
so I can look for either format when I'm looking for their score on Friday night.

ATTENTION : Hurley, Piedmont District & Mtn. Empire District fans -
most of these schools have moved the kickoff for home games to 7 p.m.
ATTENTION : MEDIA bethren - use of the material below is EMBARGOED
until 4 p.m. Thursday, 8/30 unless specifically granted. When used, you MUST

William Fleming & Patrick Henry-Roanoke will share PH's new stadium,
so they'll both have some Saturday games.
Holston, Brookville, Robert E. Lee (Staunton) & Tallwood wrap up
their regular season in Oct., while Castlewood, which hasn't played a
regular season game in Nov. since 2002, has TWO of 'em on tap this year.
Auburn & Glenvar are the only western VA teams with no games in Aug.
Craig Co. & William Byrd also play 10 straight weeks.
The only Va. team with 2 consecutive in-season bye weeks is Caroline.
Latest first home game : 9/28 for Charles City & Page (maybe Nandua)
9/21 for Auburn (maybe Haysi)
Latest first road game : 9/28 for Hurley & Gretna
9/21 for Castlewood, Glenvar and 8 others
Earliest final home game : 10/12 for JJ Kelly, Patrick Henry & Jamestown
Earliest final road game : 10/12 for Coeburn & George Wythe
(technically, it's 9/28 for Maury, since their final Away game
is against the team they share their stadium with)
Latest first district game : 11/2 for Nandua, 10/19 for Hurley, Parry McCluer,
the 4 Blue Ridge teams and 4 other teams.
Earliest final district game : 10/19 for Haysi & Ervinton
(The Black Diamond is AGAIN the only District where one team begins
their District schedule the same night another team finishes theirs).
Longest stretch between home games : Parry McCluer, 9/21 - 11/2 &
Va. High, 8/24 - 10/5 (6 weeks)
Longest stretch between road games : Cave Spring, 8/31 - 10/12,
Ervinton & East. Mont., 9/7 - 10/19 (6 weeks)
Longest stretch between District games : Harrisonburg, 8/24 - 10/19 (8 weeks)
George Wythe, Salem, Southampton & Kecoughton's last 3 games are
at home AND against District opponents.
Blacksburg, Jamestown & Hampton's last 3 games are on the road AND
against District opponents.
Castlewood & JJ Kelly also close with 3 road games.
Va. High is the only Group A school in the state that doesn't have a
Div. 1 opponent on their schedule.
Div. 2 Castlewood has NINE Div. 1 opponents; only Coeburn is also Div. 2
Div. 1 Hurley & Twin Valley have 8 (both play Castlewood & Honaker),
along with Ervinton & St. Paul (both play Castlewood & Coeburn).
Lee goes 7 weeks without playing a Va. opponent (8/24 - 10/12)
Hurley goes EIGHT weeks without playing a Va. opponent (8/24 - 10/19)
they play 5 out-of-state teams (4 are from WV) and only 3 District teams.
Pocahontas & Bath Co. both play 3 out-of-state teams - all are from WV.
Greenville Co. is the only VA public school with just 9 games.
Colonial Beach, which returns to Group A after a few years as an independent,
opens with a Group AA opponent (King George), followed by defending Div. 2
state champ Goochland.
Circle Sept. 7th on your calendar - that's when powerhouses William Campbell
and Bluefield meet at Mitchell Stadium, where Generals coach Brad Bradley's dad
(Larry) was a part of Graham's 1962 state championship team that was coached by
his dad, Burrhead Bradley.
Who has the toughest schedule around ths year? You can come up with your
own choice and reasoning, but my choice is ... Gate City. The Blue Devils
play FOUR district champs AND FOUR wild-card teams that went a combined 74-25

their opponents went 78-41 (65.46%)!!

Where's the easiest place to catch a game? As always, in Hampton Roads.
Todd Stadium in Newport News (which 5 teams share) will play host to 25 games
in the regular season, including 2 Homecoming games on Sat., Oct 6th.
Hampton's Darling Stadium, used by 4 teams, will have 20 regular-season games.
AND, there will be 1,880 District games played in the VHSL this year,
with HALF of them occuring in Group AAA.
