An Aug. 8th story in the Roanoke Times says former Clintwood standout Justin Hamilton should see significant time at RB when the Hokies play defending national champs Southern Cal Sat. night in DC.

A May story in the Coalfied Progress reports that a number of SW Va. players will be at UVA-Wise this Fall, including Josh Bentley (from Gate City, through Sullivan North), Honaker's D.J. Hall, Clintwood's Dylan Shupe, Pound's C.J. Johnson, Appy's Donovan Mabe, Powell Valley's Brent Miller, JJ Kelly's Reuben Swindall, and Rye Cove's Brandon Sturgill.

According to a July 27th article in the Bristol Herald-Courier, former Powell Valley & UVa standout Julius Jones signed with the Dallas Cowboys.

According to a May 2nd article in the Kingsport Times-News, former Lee High & ETSU DT Brandon Calton signed a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who want him at DE.

While hazing was the downfall of some high schoolers last Fall, alcohol has been the downfall of a couple of highly touted in-state college players in 2004.

Partying with local high school girls got Marcus Vick in trouble earlier this year, then he got caught speeding in New Kent county over the 4th of July weekend, and some pot was found in his 2005 vehicle, leading to Vick's suspension from the team a couple of days later.

Vick was later suspended from Tech for the Fall semester and loses a year of eligibility.

Found a decent little ACC primer for all you Hokies at TechSideline.com.

A couple of weeks later, Graham's Ahmed Bradshaw was caught with an open container of alcohol in Hoo-ville (see the Charlottesville, Richmond & Bluefield stories). Because of Ahmed's reaction, Coach Groh announced a few days later that Bradshaw "will not be participating" with the team this season (see stories in Bluefield , Richmond , Richmond , & Lynchburg). (Gotta wonder how the police were able to chase him down on foot.)

Another couple of weeks later, the August 9th edition of the Huntington Herald-Dispatch and the August 10th edition of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph said he had transferred & reported to training camp at Marshall U. up in Huntington.

Additional stories can be found in the Aug. 12th edition of the Charleston Daily Mail, the Aug. 13th edition of the Beckley Register-Herald, an Aug. 19th AP story, an Aug.20th story in the Beckley Register-Herald, and in Doug Doughty's Notebook entries of July 23 and Aug. 13.

Meanwhile, the Aug. 25th edition of the Charlottesville Daily Progress says former William Campbell star Cedric Peerman is adjusting well at UVA.

Hooray for the CFB powers that be for simplifying the BCS. They figured out that the computer rankings already take into consideration strength of schedule, number of losses & quality wins, so those 3 components have been dropped. The new formula is quite simple : one-third each for the AP coaches poll, the ESPN sports writers poll, and the average of the computer polls. While it may not give the final result everybody wants, it WILL eliminate a lot of the debate over the numbers, making the lives of message-board operators a lot easier. (see the Associated Press story)

More details on the EXACT formula (which includes x/1625) can be found in this ESPN story.

A good story on why top-ranked USC didn't belong in the BCS title game can be found at Anderson Sports, which compiles one of the polls (A&H) used in the BCS rankings. Basically, only 1 win vs. a Top 25 team and a loss to 7-6 Cal. did them in on the computers.

2004 computer polls : Anderson & Hester , Billingsley (Nashville), Colley (Bristol), Massey (Tech), Sagarin , Wolfe ,
