new Va. schools for 2003

Four new schools will appear in the Va. scoreboards this Fall.

The Dominion Titans and the Millbrook Pioneers both debut in Group AA's Region II.

Dominion, located in Loudoun Co. (the Sugarland Run area of Sterling) draws from Park View & Potomac High Schools.
The Titans first Head Coach was going to be Bill Holt from J.E.B. Stuart, but he decided to look for a position in North Carolina because he was tired of the drive down I-95 to see his wife and daughter.

So the Titans hired 32 year old Michael Dougherty, who had a 12-18 record over the last 3 seasons at Prince Edward H.S. in Farmville. Before that, he served as off. coordinator at Lousia Co. H.S. for 5 years.

Millbrook, in Frederick Co., draws from James Wood & Sherando High Schools. Their first Head Coach is Rodney Bowers.

(BTW, Sherando named William Hall as the replacement for Tim Davis.)

Millbrook will be joined in Northwestern District by Brentsville District, which moves up from Group A. But don't get too used to the Tigers ... they'll probably drop back down in 2005 because Prince William Co. will open two new schools in 2004 : Long Park in Haymarket (about 10 miles from Brentsville), and Neabsco Mills in Woodbridge, across from the NVCC campus.

A couple of new AAA teams debut in the Richmond area.
Hanover opens this year and Deep Run, which opened last year with just a JV team, starts their varsity program this Fall.

In Tennessee, Powell Valley & Forge Ridge combined to form Cumberland Gap.

Looking ahead :

Opening in 2004 are King's Fork in Suffolk & Spotsylvania County High School.
Opening in 2005 will be 2 schools in Loudoun Co. : Freedom (at South Riding) and Briar Woods (at Brambleton).

Future consolidation rumors include : Appalachia with Powell Valley; Haysi with Clintwood and/or Ervinton; Hurley with Grundy; Laurel Park with Magna Vista; Fieldale-Collinsville with Bassett; Armstrong with Kennedy.
