Elliot's BCA Bowl comments

As a DJ, first let me dedicate a song to anyone who had anything to do with that game.... here's Alanis Morissette with Ironic.

First, VT (henchforth to be called Vick's Team) pushed their alphabetical luck too far. After finishing their season at home last year facing BC with a berth in a major BCS Bowl at stake, the Hokies tried to start this season by hosting the BCA Bowl. Wonder if they hit the BC Headache Powder after the game ?!?!?

And what of this BCA Bowl? You know what REALLY went on? The BCA set this up as a fund-raiser game, with the proceeds going into THEIR coffers. And they wanted to charge higher than usual ticket prices. So they needed a team with a lot of fan support and a lot of hicks willing to shell out $35 for a ticket.

But they also needed to give the teams SOME money, so they set up a deal with ESPN so that each team received $600,000. This gave ESPN a little more power than they should have.
And what better team to face the Hokies, with basically a whole new defensive line-up, than a team with a new QB that needed a tune-up before facing the only team to beat the Hokies last year. Plus, Ga. Tech's AD was the former AD at Va. Tech PLUS one of their graduate assistants played for the Hokies last season.... as a matter of fact, he's the son of the Head Coach. So the Beamer match-up was a perfect fit for them, raising almost $2 million.

By the way, know what the Hokies said they had ear-marked their share of the money for? Improving the drainage system at Worsham Field.

I was at my dentis's office recently when I saw the issue of SI that had Michael Vick on the cover. He mentioned something that I hated to hear... the SI curse. Well, after going back and looking at the cover again, I have a feeling that the curse has run its' course.

And that old saying that God must be a Hokie because the leaves turn maroon and orange in the Fall... I'm really beginning to believe that now. Did you see the ESPN footage of the car just outside the stadium that was struck by lightning? That bolt was less than 100 yards away from a section of aluminum bleachers packed with fans and from the TALL light towers along the top of the stadium. So why did it miss the fans and hit a car that was parked in a valley? Maybe because of what the car's driver had said just moments earlier on national TV. The man who helped fan the Hokies flame last year with his early-season prediction that the Hokies would face FSU in the Sugar Bowl said at the end of ESPN's College GameDay that he thought Ga. Tech would pull the upset. Maybe God doesn't like people who jump off the bandwagon, Lee Corso.

Now comes news that the BCA, ESPN, the promoters (The Gazelle Group from New Jersey) and Va. Tech are all ready to make-up the game on Friday, Dec. 1st (never mind that this needs special approval from the NCAA). But Ga. Tech is dragging their feet. Well, let me say, keep dragging, Yellow Jackets. Without knowing what kind of legal mumbo-jumbo is in the contract, I feel that a special, one-time, 'pre-season' game shouldn't try to be made up at the end of the season. Ga. Tech AD David Braine wasn't all that thrilled to be facing his former school to start with, but he went along with the wishes of his head coach. Now, he's being made to look like the bad guy.

There's a lot to be considered in this situation, and I was surprised that the Hokies made the announcement so quickly. Personally, I hope the game is cancelled for good.
