Lain is a quiet 14-year-old schoolgirl who recieves an e-mail from her friend Chisa. The only problem with this is Chisa had commited suicide a few days before. Inspired to communicate with Chisa, Lain gets a new computer, a top of the line Navi. Lain becomes incresingly interested in her Navi and the Wired which is sort of like the future of Internet where people can actually go inside their computers. Lain updates her Navi constantly and is amazingly good with Wired.
While Lain is continually delving into the worls of the Wired, some of her friends ( Alice, Reika, and Julie) start seeing some one at a local hangout, Cyberia, who looks a lot like Lain, but acts completley different. Alice begins to worry about how much Lain plays on her Navi, and is drawing away.
