SHIP'S LOG

Commanding Officer’s Report…

Stardate:  10112.28

FCAPT John Winsley Reporting…

Greetings and Salutations…

I hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Well, it has been a busy three months since my last report.  We have participated in a lot of events:  the Haunted House at the VA Air and Space Center, the USS Maat’s Star Trek the Movie showing, attended the IKV Bat’Leth’s Anniversary Dinner, our own Christmas Party and the IKV Bat’Leth’s Christmas party.

SHIP’S NEWS:

Two department heads have stepped down from their positions:  Cmdr Paul Payne has resigned as Chief of Sciences and Cmdr Linda Leonardy has resigned as Chief of Security.  Also we have two new department heads:  LtCmdr David Bock is the new Chief of Security and Captain Lori Anne Joyner is the New Acting Chief of Engineering.  We have these Senior Staff positions open:  Chief of Operations, Chief of Sciences, Commandant of the Cadet Corps, and Chief Petty Officer of the Command (enlisted only).  Also we have these Junior Staff positions open:  Assistant Chief of Security, Assistant Chief of Medical, Assistant Chief of Operations, Assistant Chief of Sciences, Assistant Chief of Services, Assistant Chief of Engineering and Acting Ensign (cadet only).  If you are interested in an automatic promotion by taking a Senior Staff position you are promoted to the rank of LT Commander, and if you take a Junior Staff position you are promoted to the rank of LT.  If you are interested contact the XO Captain Marilyn Romero or me.

REGIONAL NEWS:

In October 2001, RAdmr Carolyn Donner resigned her position as the Region One Regional Coordinator and RAdmr Willy Smith has been Acting R1 RC.  Since then there have been nominations and we are in the process of an election.  The candidates that are running are Carl Lewis (USS Charleston), Jack Hopkins (Vice R1 RC) and Robin Pillow (Region One Relief Fund).  After a lot of research and discussion with the Staff and some other STARFLEET Chapters, I have voted for Carl Lewis.  By the time this newsletter is issued the STARFLEET IG should have informed everyone of the winner of the election.  I will keep you informed.

REGION AWARDS NEWS:

We had a number of USS Jamestown Members receive Region One Awards.  Below is the list.

Name/Rank                            Award

FCapt John Winsley                 R1 10 Year Good Conduct Award

Cmdr Mary Ann Winsley          R1 10 Year Good Conduct Award

Cpl. James Winsley                  R1 10 Year Good Conduct Award

Cmdr Lee Vitasek                    R1 10 Year Good Conduct Award

Cmdr Paul Payne                      R1 10 Year Good Conduct Award

Capt Lori Ann Joyner               R1   5 Year Good Conduct Award

Capt Marilyn Romero               R1   5 Year Good Conduct Award

Maj. Michael Romero               R1   5 Year Good Conduct Award

If you would like to get the Region One Award Ribbons we will be having an R1 Awards Work Shop at my house on the last Saturday of the month at about 5 PM.  What you will need to bring is a copy of any R1 Award you have been awarded, also OTS and OCC certificates.  I will have the info on R1 ship's awards we have been given.  Then we will work out a package to send to the R1 Awards Coordinator to get the ribbons.

PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR:

The Staff is making plans for the year 2002.  One of the things we are going to do is have some recruiting displays.  I have been given names and phone numbers of some various places where we could have a recruiting display.  Of course, we will have our usual recruiting display at the Center’s Off World Festival which should be in February or March 2002.  I want to visit a Region One STARFLEET ship again this year (we have done this for the last four years).  This year I am thinking of taking a road trip to the USS Athena, which would be a weekend, or at least over night, since they are up in Northern Virginia.  An alternate would be the USS Powhatan, which is local.  Another event we plan to have is the USS Maat has approached us and the IKV Bat'Leth about sharing the Maat’s Casino Night.  And of course our big thing this year will be our 20th Anniversary Dinner.  We are trying to think big on this one.  We want to invite the STARFLEET Commander and Region 1 Coordinator.  If you have any ideas please let us know.  Other events will be our annual picnic, March of Dimes Walk America, the VA Air and Space Center’s Haunted House, and we want to build a float for the Hampton Holly Days Parade.  Also each month on the we are having an Enterprise Party at my house where we can watch the latest episode of Enterprise.  If you have any ideas for events and things the ship can do, please feel free to contact XO Capt Marilyn Romero, or me.  I have also tasked the Department Heads to have events or projects for their departments.  Again, if you have ideas for your department head or even a different department head, please contact them and let them know.

Well, that’s about it.  We are going to have a Great Year!

FCapt John Winsley  Signing Off….

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S LOG:

STARDATE 10112.29

CAPTAIN MARILYN ROMERO

REPORTING. . .

Greetings, crew of the Mighty Jamestown!  We’ve had a busy few months, now that everyone is trying to get back to normal after the 9-11 attacks.  Several members of our crew attended the USS Maat’s anniversary party on October 13th.  The theme was everything Vulcan.  John and Mary Ann Winsley came as Hawaiian Vulcans.  See photos elsewhere in this issue.  We all had a great time.  Our next big event was the Haunted House we organized for the Virginia Air and Space Center.  We have done this every year for the past several years.  Although it was a lot of work, we enjoyed doing it.  If you missed it, I have included several photos of the Haunted House, also.  On November 3rd, a contingent from the Jamestown attended the IKV Bat’Leth’s anniversary dinner.  It was held at a place called “Celebrations” in Newport News.  It was a very elegant place, and we are considering having the Jamestown’s 20th Anniversary celebration there.  We had our annual Christmas party at the Winsley’s home on December 14th.  Since it was the day before my birthday, I also received several birthday gifts.  I was pleased and surprised.  Thanks very much to all.  We also had a very successful auction to benefit the Ship’s treasury.  I also want to thank everyone who donated items and also those who purchased things.

As you may realize if you have read the CO’s report, we have had several changes in the Command Staff.  These changes have also left several vacancies.  If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact me or your CO.  This is a great way to get more involved in our club and in your community.  The only way for our club to continue with our many events and charities is for as many crewmembers as possible to participate.  The more you participate, the more fun we have and the more people we are able to help.  We shouldn’t forget the USS Jamestown’s motto, which is “Let Me Help.”  (This is also a great chance for a promotion!)

Here’s hoping that you and yours had a wonderful holiday.  Live long and prosper.

CAPT MARILYN ROMERO SIGNING OFF. . .

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

STARDATE:  10112.30

COMM Richard W. Hewitt,

Recording . . .

Again it has been a very busy three months for us.  On a personal note, I lost my mother on Dec. 15th and then on the last day of work I was laid off from Canon.  But things will be OK in the long run.  And as far as the Ship goes it has been busy also, we have done a lot things.  I think we had a good year and I hope we will have a better one in 2002.

I would like to acknowledge the Ships that are part of our newsletter exchange program.  They are:  "The Short Circuit," USS MAAT in Virginia Beach, VA; "The Observer," USS CEYLON in St. Louis, MO; "The Legend," USS ATLAS in St. Ann, MO; and "Tikopai Express," USS TIKOPAI in San Jose, CA.  I for one enjoy reading the newsletters from the other ships.  If I missed anybody, I apologize and I will try to get it into the next issue.

Once again I need stories and artwork from you, the members of the Jimmy-T, to use in the STARDATE this coming year.  So, start writing now and get those stories and artwork in to us as soon as you can!  If you have some pictures you would like to see in the STARDATE, just get them to me and I will see if I can use them in the next issue.  You can give them to me as a normal picture, or if you can scan them and send them to me, I will have a head start on getting them into the newsletter.

As always, I need your stories, artwork, and reports turned in to me NO LATER THAN THE 20th OF THE MONTH PRIOR TO PUBLICATION.  For those dates just check the first column on the 2nd page.  It is very easy to get your reports, stories, and artwork to me.  1) Just give it to me at a meeting.  Please type it, or put it on a disk.  If on a disk, please have it formatted for a PC and save it as a text file (*.txt).  2) E-mail it to VEKMA@JUNO.COM (this is our XO Marilyn Romero's email address).  Once she has reviewed it, she will send it to me.

STARDATE Security Report

Date:  December 16, 2001

Commander Linda Leonardy Reporting…

Hello Fellow Voyagers:

By the time you read this, Christmas and New Year’s will have already passed.  I hope everyone’s holiday was happy.  Hopefully, this New Year will be better.

There are many events that we as a ship can look forward to:  possibly another Klingon/Starfleet Blood Feud, our annual picnic and many other things as well.  However the one I am really looking forward to celebrating is the twentieth anniversary of the USS Jamestown.  (a not–too–subtle hint for the Command Staff!  Maybe you should go ahead and notify the Commander Starfleet, Les Rickard, so he can have an advance notice of our twentieth anniversary.)  After all, he does live in North Carolina and twenty years in Starfleet is a big deal.

One more thing.  This will be my last official report for the Security Department.  I an unable to fulfill my duties as a department chief, and it’s best for the ship if I step down as the Chief of Security.  Whoever assumes the position of Chief of Security, I wish them well.  I will be turning over to John all of the Security Department items that I have made – such as the ID cards and recruiting posters.  Maybe the next chief can use them.

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year.

Commander Linda Leonardy signing off…

Chief Security Officer’s Report

Stardate:  10112.29

Lt Cmdr David Bock Reporting. . .

I hope everyone had a great and safe Christmas!  I just wanted to inform all hands that I have volunteered and been recently appointed as Chief of Security for the USS JAMESTOWN (NCC-1843-D).  With the recent events happening around our country and the world, I would like to remind everyone to think about safety and security 24/7, whether at work or at play.  Whenever we are at an unsecure location for any of our events, I will be especially aware of the security conditions at the site.  As with my real world job in the U.S. Navy, I take security requirements very seriously.  Through my remaining time onboard, I will endeavor to serve the CO and the crew to the best of my abilities.  Remember, think safety 24/7!

Hailing frequencies closed.

Commander Mary Ann Winsley Reporting . . .

Hi Crew,

In my last report I talked about volunteering for the American Red Cross.  At our November 2001 meeting we had a representative from the American Cancer Society come to our meeting to talk to us about volunteering.  Since some people did not make that meeting, below is some information on volunteering for the ACS.  Note I volunteer two or three times a month driving Cancer patients who do not have transportation from their homes to their Chemo treatments, Radiation treatments or doctor’s appointments.  This is a really easy thing to volunteer for because it takes only a few hours at most, just to give them a ride to and from their appointments.  Below are the local ACS offices where you can call to volunteer or make donations.

The Crazy 8th Report

STARDATE:  10112.11

COL JASON SCHRECK

108th MSG OIC, Reporting. . .

Well, I have a few things to report this month.  First of all, I hope everyone had a happy Holiday.  Second, some of you may have noticed last month in the Stardate, and some of you saw my promotion at the meeting, but I’m now a full Colonel in the Starfleet Marines.  This of course means a big pay raise.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Marine rank structure, a Colonel is the Marine equivalent of a Captain in Starfleet.  I was obviously glad to hear I got the promotion. I would have mentioned it last month, but when I sent in my last report it wasn’t yet official.  Next, I'm planning one big project for the department this coming summer.  I would appreciate the participation of everyone in the department and may need to ask members of other departments for some help on this one.  I'm planning on making a recruiting video for the strike group.  The current plan is to shoot at several locations around the area.  Currently planned locations are the VA Air and Space center, War Memorial Museum, and if possible the Army Transportation museum at Fort Eustis.  The video will introduce the Marines to potential members and talk about some of the fictional positions available.  I'd like to have all the Marines participate in this project.  I have run into a snag though; I do not own a video camera, and so far don’t know if any other Marines in the unit do, either.  I would appreciate it if any crew member of the ship who has a video camera would allow us to use it.  I will take full responsibility for it, and pay if anything happens to it.  Or if someone would be willing to help us film the video by using the camera themselves during the filming.  Sorry this report has gotten a little long, but if anyone is willing to lend the video camera, or do the shooting please get in touch with me.

Last but not least, any Marines who received an award from the Starfleet Marine Corps at or after the anniversary dinner, and are interested in ordering the ribbons they’ve earned, please let me know. Supcom has gotten the new ribbons in and I plan to place an order sometime after the first of the year.  I’ve already figured how much everyone’s awards would cost, so see me so I can let you know the cost if you’re interested.

That’s all for this month.

Colonel Schreck signing off

Over Seas Coupon Project Report..

Stardate:  10112.22

Communications Channels open….

Captain John Winsley Reporting…

Hi Crew!  Below is our present total for the Over Seas Coupon Project.  We held a coupon cutting party in October 2001 and shipped out the coupons the next week.  The last party we only had six people come to help out, and three of them were myself, Mary Ann and Jimmy.  So for now, since we (the Command Staff) have decided that since the crew participation in the Stupid Movie Night and Coupon Cutting Party has dropped to near nothing, we will take a temporary break the from the parties.  There will be no more Stupid Movie Nights and Coupon Cutting Parties scheduled.  Note if anyone in the crew wants to become the OCP Coordinator for the ship, let me know.  We can still go on with cutting coupons and making shipments if members are interested in bringing them to the meeting.  What I need is for the members to do a little extra work in the future.  Not only cut them out, but sort them by Food and Non-Food and calculate the packet's value (Food and Non-Food Value).  This way whoever ships them will not have a whole bunch of work sorting and counting them to do before the packet goes to our adopted base.  The Command Staff and I will inform the club if and when we have another Coupon Cutting Party.  If you are interested in OCP Coordinator, please let me know.

Collected since the last shipment:

Food:                                                   $00,663.68

Non Food:                                           $01,549.63

Total last Shipped:                                $01,518,37

Total shipped in 1998                           $03,861.06

Total shipped in 1999                           $25,273.07

Total shipped in 2000                           $19,517.12

Total for 2001                                      $06,358.62

Total since 1998                                   $55,009.87

Thanks for all the help!!!!

STAR TREK NEWS

Official "Nemesis" Press Release

DATE: 12.17.01

Captured from the Star Trek Web Site: http://www.startrek.com

By FCapt John Winsley

PARAMOUNT PICTURES ANNOUNCES "STAR TREK: NEMESIS"

BEGINS PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY

HOLLYWOOD, December 11, 2001 — "Star Trek: Nemesis" has begun principal photography, filming primarily on soundstages and locations in Southern California. The fourth motion picture featuring the cast of the Emmy-winning television series Star Trek: The Next Generation created by Gene Roddenberry, "Star Trek: Nemesis" is produced by Rick Berman and directed by Stuart Baird. The screenplay is written by Oscar®-nominated John Logan ("Gladiator" and the 2002 release "The Time Machine") from a story by Logan & Berman and Brent Spiner. Marty Hornstein serves as executive producer and unit production manager, Peter Lauritson serves as co-producer and Jeffrey L. Kimball ("Mission Impossible 2") is director of photography. Paramount Pictures is part of the entertainment operations of Viacom Inc.

Reprising their starring roles as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise are Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), LeVar Burton (Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Worf), Gates McFadden (Commander Beverly Crusher, Chief Medical Officer), and Marina Sirtis (Lieutenant Commander Deanna Troi, Counselor).

On their way to celebrate the wedding of First Officer Will Riker and Counselor Deanna Troi, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise crew are suddenly diverted for an unexpected diplomatic mission to the planet Romulus. Longtime enemies of the Federation, the Romulans have expressed their desire to initiate negotiations that will hopefully lead to a long-awaited unity in the galaxy. But upon their arrival on Romulus, the Enterprise crew is faced with a threat that could lead to the destruction of the planet Earth, and Picard comes face to face with a man who may prove to be his most dangerous adversary yet … and surprisingly personal nemesis.

Stuart Baird previously directed the political thriller "Executive Decision" starring Kurt Russell and Steven Seagal, as well as the follow-up to the Academy Award®-winning "The Fugitive," "U.S. Marshals" starring Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes. Producer Rick Berman continues to guide the Star Trek universe after producing "Star Trek Generations," "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek: Insurrection." He was executive producer of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the co-creator/executive producer of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Berman is also currently producing the "prequel" series Enterprise, which he co-created as well.

Perlman Beams To 'Nemesis'

FROM SCIFIWIRE:

27-December-01

Veteran genre actor Ron Perlman (Alien: Resurrection) will join the cast of Star Trek: Nemesis, the official Star Trek Web site reported.

The site also confirmed the casting of newcomer Tom Hardy as Shinzon, the nemesis of the film's title, as expected.

The TrekWeb site offered a few spoilers about Perlman's character. He will reportedly play the Viceroy, a mentor to Shinzon, who cared for him during his youth on Remus, the Romulan sister world. The Viceroy is "Nosferatu-like," with a horrifying appearance that includes long, grotesque fingernails. The Viceroy is also telepathic and helps Shinzon invade Counselor Troi's mind at one point in the film, TrekWeb reported.

Perlman is perhaps best known for his starring role in the 1980s TV series Beauty and the Beast. More recently, he voiced characters in the animated SF movie Titan A.E. and the animated TV shows Mortal Kombat and

Batman.

Keating Praises 'Enterprise'

FROM SCIFIWIRE

19-December-01

Enterprise co-star Dominic Keating told SCI FI Wire that he thinks he knows why the UPN series continues to win stellar ratings, while its Star Trek predecessor, Voyager, declined following its premiere.

"I never watched Voyager, but Voyager got a huge pilot figure, even bigger than ours, dare I say," the British actor said in an interview. "Why they dropped  off? I don't know. It probably got a bit sterile, and that's why [creator-executive producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga] brought Enterprise back to be a prequel and  [brought] it closer to some sort of sense of human drama."

Keating plays Lt. Malcolm Reed on the freshman series and counts among his other genre credits episodes of Poltergeist: The Legacy, G vs E, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Immortal and Special Unit 2. "Our show definitely appeals to an audience now because it's close enough in time where you can get a concept of what it might be like," he said of Enterprise. "We live like spacemen in those suits a lot of the time, and we mess up. We don't get it all right the whole time. It's kind of like Lewis and Clark. We're explorers, and it's the first expedition into deep space for humankind. There is an earthy quality to it, even though it's SF drama. It's [also] funny, and it's sexy and altogether more human." Enterprise airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT Wednesdays on UPN.

UPN AND CBS MERGE

From Daily News:

Captured off the internet by:

FCapt John Winsley

"CBS President Leslie Moonves yesterday was given the additional duty of running UPN. Moonves, who has helped turn CBS around since arriving at the network six years ago, will now also oversee UPN, which was launched in 1995 and has since lost millions. 'The Agency,' starring Will Patton (r.) and Gil Bellows, may be moving from CBS to UPN....Despite ratings increases this season, the general industry view is Valentine's programming for UPN has been lackluster. The network's largest draw has been the various "Star Trek" series, which started before UPN and its WWF telecasts. Last season, Valentine acquired the WB's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Roswell." For CBS, operating UPN creates built-in efficiencies in staffing and ad sales. It also gives CBS a chance to recycle some programming between the networks. In theory, a drama such as "The Agency," which appeals to males, could reair on UPN; conversely, CBS could make use of UPN's "Enterprise." A more likely scenario would see UPN carry CBS News' coverage of crises." -- thanks, evay!

MEMBER CONTRUBUTION

Christmas past/Christmas present

Captured from the Web by COMM Richard Hewitt

1.  Last Christmas we were thinking about all the things we didn't have; this Christmas we are thinking about all the things we do have.

2.  Last Christmas we were placing wreaths on the doors of our homes; this Christmas we are placing wreaths on the graves of our heroes.

3.  Last Christmas we were letting our sons play with toy guns; this Christmas we are teaching them that guns are not toys.

4.  Last Christmas we were counting our money; this Christmas we are counting our blessings.

5.  Last Christmas we were lighting candles to decorate; this Christmas  we are lighting candles to commemorate.

6.  Last Christmas we paid lip service to the real meaning of the holidays; this Christmas we are paying homage to it.

7.  Last Christmas we were digging deep into our bank accounts to find money to fly home for the holidays; this Christmas we are digging deep into our souls to find the courage to do so

8.  Last Christmas we were trying not to let annoying relatives get the best of us; this Christmas we are trying to give the best of ourselves to them.

9.  Last Christmas we thought it was enough to celebrate the holidays; this Christmas we know we must also find ways to consecrate them.

10.  Last Christmas we thought a man who could rush down a football field  was a hero; this Christmas we know a man who rushes into a burning building is the real one.

11.  Last Christmas we were thinking about the madness of the holidays; this Christmas we are thinking about the meaning of them.

12.  Last Christmas we were getting on one another's nerves; this Christmas  we are getting on our knees.

13.  Last Christmas we were giving thanks for gifts from stores; this Christmas we are giving thanks for gifts from GOD.

14.  Last Christmas we were wondering how to give our children all the things that money can buy; this Christmas we are wondering how to give them all the things money can't (peace, security).

15.  Last Christmas we were thinking about all the pressure we were under at the office; this Christmas we are thinking about all the people who no longer have an office to go to.

16.  Last Christmas we were singing carols; this Christmas we are singing Anthems.

17.  Last Christmas we were thinking how good it would feel to be affluent; this Christmas we are thinking how good it feels to be alive.

18.  Last Christmas we thought angels were in heaven; this Christmas we know they are right here on earth.

19.  Last Christmas we were contemplating all the changes we wanted to make in the new year; this Christmas we are contemplating all the changes we will have to make in this new reality.

20.  Last Christmas we believed in the power of the pocketbook; this Christmas we believe in the power of prayer.

21.  Last Christmas we were sharing / spreading / listening to gossip; this Christmas we are sharing / spreading / listening to the Gospel.

22.  Last Christmas we were complaining about how much of our earnings went to taxes; this Christmas we comprehend that freedom isn't free.

23.  Last Christmas we valued things that were costly; this Christmas we value things that are holy.

24.  Last Christmas the people we idolized wore sports uniforms; this Christmas the people we idolize wear police, firefighter and military uniforms.

25.   Last Christmas peace on earth was something we prayed for on Sunday morning; now it's something we pray  for every day.

Twas a Star Trek Christmas

Captured by FCAPT John Winsley

from web page: http://www.geocities.com/alexkr.geo

'Twas the night before Christmas on the Enterprise-D,

On a routine short hop to Starbase 03,

With Data on duty in the command chair,

At Warp 6, the Enterprise soon would be there.

Just for something to do while the other crew slept,

He scanned where historical records were kept --

And with a blink of his eye and a cock of his head,

"Intriguing! Tomorrow is Christmas!" he said.

But no one was stirring, and he sought to find why,

And so he buzzed Geordi, who awoke with a sigh:

"Christmas? It's only an old holiday --

Now just let me get back to sleep, okay?"

"But is to wish Merry Christmas not human to do?"

And so Data wished it -- to the whole ship and crew.

Everyone on the Enterprise awoke from this clatter --

Picard rushed to the bridge to see what was the matter.

"What is the meaning of this noise, Mister Data?"

"Sir, is it not Christmas--?" "We'll discuss it much later!"

Just then Worf said, "Captain -- a Klingon Prey Bird!

Its hull has been damaged -- it's uncloaking, sir."

"On screen," said Picard, as the Klingon ship hailed:

"Federation vessel, our Life Support systems have failed!

A strange ship attacked us, inflicting the worst,

(though naturally, of course, we'd fired on it first)."

The Klingons beamed over, and the senior staff met,

To try and determine the source of the threat.

Said Picard, "Mister Data, an assignment for you:

Give all of these Klingons something to do!

They think it's the Romulans we should look for,

Get them all off the bridge, before there's a war!"

So Data departed, while the rest of the crew

Wondered: Romulans? Ferengi? If not them, then who?

Said Worf, "Sir -- disturbance on Holodeck Three!"

The entire bridge crew ran down there to see.

Roared Picard, "Mister Data, what the devil is this!!"

"Sir, I have taught the Klingons how to celebrate Christmas."

And so there they were -- on holodecks 3, 4 and 5

With synthohol, singing and Rokeg Blood Pie!

Soon the Big E was rocking with holiday cheer

Friend, foe, and family came from both far and near.

The Romulans showed up with some Romulan Ale,

The Ferengi brought goodies for free -- not for sale!

But a strange ship was coming, the captain was told,

With one crew member only, and a huge cargo hold.

Said the Klingons, "It's the strange ship that fought us -- attack!"

Said Picard, "On Christmas? -- Mister Worf, just hold back."

And then as the ship came into view,

Onscreen came its captain -- none other than Q!

He wore a white beard and a suit of deep red...

"Joyeux Noel, mon captain," was what Santa Q said.

"Tell those Klingons next time to not go so berserk.

You need good defense systems in this line of work.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be warping away...

Did you think anyone else could do this job in one day?"

"I'm sensing emotion," said Counselor Troi,

"Peace in the galaxy, Good Will and Joy."

And they stood on the bridge and watched Q take flight, shouting,

"MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!"

The Blue Skin Race

 FCapt John Winsley

THE ANDORIANS--

ANDORIAN SOCIETY AND POLITICS

A planet called ANDOR

Andorians are blue-skinned humanoids with white hair.  Their slim builds conceal the well-muscled bodies of warriors.

They have a pair of knobbed antennae extending from the sides of the crown of the head. These "antennae'' are actually extensions of their sinus cavities, giving the Andorians a great sensitivity to minute variations in pressure and temperature. They have an elevated aural sensitivity and an enormously enhanced sense of smell. The actual receptors are situated within the depressions at the tips of the ``antennae'' and are protected by the hard cartilaginous tissue that keeps the ``antennae'' rigid. Their visual acuity is also well above human standards. Andorians are somewhat thinner than most humans, but weigh equivalently, and are somewhat faster in movement and reaction time.

Andorian history is one of conflict, though they do not battle without reason. The martial spirit is still alive in Andorian culture. Andorians are extremely disciplined, possessing a strong sense of duty and personal honor, and so they make excellent military officers.

Though they are stoic and largely unsentimental, they do respect and revere family ties.

Andorians are fond of technology, but they insist on its use with respect for nature. For this reason, their early wars of conquest were fought with a regard for planetary environment, and so the Andorians avoided much of the ecological devastation suffered by Terran Humans and many other cultures.

Andorians are a hard-working and serious folk, who are often but incorrectly viewed as humorless and irritable. In fact, Andorians have a complex set of propositional ``grammars'' by which they express humor, and as such they do not tend to find human humor amusing, nor do non-Andorians tend to ``get'' their humor. As to the irritability, the harsh history of early Andorian civilization has left a strong taboo against the appearance of frivolity or wasted effort.

Andorians are hard working and often feel uncomfortable when invited to pursue purely recreational activities or pastimes. Their curt refusals often make them seem prudish or unsociable, while in fact they simply don't have a strong cultural pragmatism for engaging in such activities.

Andorians are also reluctant to enter into strong personal relationships, another left over trait from their troubled past. This lack of a social skill so common in almost all other Federation races simply reinforces the sense of isolation and distance that others perceive between an Andorian and themselves.

ANDORIAN SOCIETY, POLITICS AND PREHISTORY

Society

Andorian culture is predicated on the Cooperative. A Cooperative these days is a group of 60 to 100 families who have banded together to pool their resources and abilities to provide for the whole of their number. Cooperatives tend to grow around single lines of endeavor or related centers.

As a young Andorian reaches his age of majority, he can either choose to remain with his own cooperative or seek to join another cooperative and establish a family line there. Some Andorians spend their early years alone, wandering from one city cluster to another, unable to decide on a Cooperative venture. These ``wayfarers'' are unpopular within normal Andorian society and often tend to be attracted to anti-social Cooperatives, roving bands of ruffians and malcontents who roam the countryside.

Andorian culture is divided into the ``Coastal'' and the ``Inland'' races. Those who live in coastal cities constitute about 60% of the total population, and have been the centers of technological development. The inland plains are home to semi-nomadic inland Cooperatives, who even today remain devoted to their ancient heritage. These cultural groups have minimal contact at this point, with increasing disdain on both sides.

Politics

Andorian society is still balkanized into a large number of governments. The Supreme Cooperative is a Mega-Cooperative dedicated to representing the Andorians to the Federation. However, it only represents about 30% of the Andorian population in any meaningful way. Like almost all Cooperatives, it is a mercantile effort, and while ethical and truthful in its dealings, it is dedicated to turning a profit. Before four hundred years ago, the largest social structures were the multi-cooperative walled cities that dot the southern and western coasts of Andor's more temperate continent. It has only been in the last several centuries that the notion of a government has been developed.

Prehistory

At the very beginnings of the Andorian Cooperative lifestyle was the Bond of the Words Unspoken, or the Khun-Haga, in which an individual pledged trust and service to the Tyk, in return for which the Tyk pledged the same to the individual. The Andorians understood that making this covenant a deep and binding extension of their thoughts and lives was the only thing that kept their fragile tribes safe and together, and being a stoic people, made it a point of honor to never speak to one another about the bond. No thanks were ever given for supporting the Tyk, and no explanations were ever offered to outsiders about the specific nature of the Tyk's unspoken bond. The only thing that was recognized by all was that the Khun-Haga was a force in Andorian life more powerful than the spectacular desert lightning, and herder to break than the rare and powerful bellium weapons forged by the first Delvers.

ANDOR Andor is the home planet of ANDORIANS, called FESOAN in the Andorian language. Andor is a class M planet VIII out of nine in the Epsilon Indi system. It is a large, hot dry world with little surface water, and a gravity of 0.9g. There are, however, vast underground reserves that feed surface geysers heated by geothermal energy. Oases surrounding these geysers are the centers of the planet's main population areas, since the great majority of Andor's plant life thrives where subsurface water is plentiful located in the system Epsilon Indi, with a thinner atmosphere than Earth, but with a cold climate. The population is actually around 21 million people. The planet circumference is about 56.500 Km. Andor has three moons orbiting around.

STARTREK THE NEXT GENERATION:

THE PARODY (Part 1)

or

Across the Galaxy on a Plot Device per Day.

Captured by Fcapt John Winsley from the Internet Web page:  http://www.geocities.com/alexkr.geo

[Scene 0 Space shot, zooming planets, voice over begins]

"These are the voyages of the Starship Firstprise,[the following is said very fast] formally the U.S.S. Firstprise but no-one could think up a decent explanation for the U.S.S. other than United States Ship and that’s almost as offensive as saying 'where no MAN has gone before' and we wouldn't want to get sued would we?  [Return to normal speed]  Our continuing mission to explore strange new plot devices, discover improbable latex alien races.  To boldly have corny lines said where they have never been said before!"

Episode "Best of both Smurfs"

Captains log. Stardate Half past 3 point 4, the Firstprise has been cruising for 5 weeks now and nothing has happened, all I do is make these bloody pointless log entries, God I wish something would happen!

[Scene 1 - Bridge scene, Pickirk has finished his log entry]

Jim-Luc Pickirk looked skyward, or at least roofward, wondering if something else controlled his destiny, a voice echoed through his head.  "Script writers" the voice said, "do not infuriate the Script writers."  This prompted Pickirk to ask Info a question "Mr Info, give me all the information we have on a race called the 'Script writers" Info responded at once.  "A mythical race, described as gods by the people of Earth, apparently able to break laws of physics in a single sentence, re-write history in a single episode and who have a total disregard for properly developed plots.  Their existence has never been proven though sir."  "Hmmmmmm" pondered Pickirk, he stood and executed the Pickirk tug.  "I'll be in my quarters Mr Info, you have the Bridge.  Pickirk walked into the elevator and ordered it to his floor, he got there in immediately, this was because he wasn't talking to anyone.  It was a bizarre fact but it seemed to take the elevator exactly the same time to reach whatever floor as it took the people having a conversation in the elevator to finish, this was particularly apparent with vital plot explaining dialogue.

[Scene 2 In Ten-Forward, the Firstprises Bar]

Down (or up, or sideways, hell I don't have a map) in 10 Forward Guinan was serving Riker a beer.  Riker was looking puzzled.  "Guinan, why are you serving drinks?"  Guinan too looked puzzled.  "You’re right," she said "replicators make drinks and I've won Oscar for "Ghost," why should I be a crummy bartender?"  In a swift motion she leapt the counter and joined Riker on the far side.

"So Will, what's the matter?  "I'm bored Guinan, I haven't said 'load torpedos, arm phasers' in over a month, not a single 'on screen' 'energise' or 'engage'.  Even the Captain hasn't said 'Make it so' in nearly as long, the rot's setting in, I'm losing my edge!"  "Did you ever have it?" Guinan pointed out.  "Yes, watch a re-run of Best of Both Worlds 2, I was good, damn good!"  Guinan remembered the episode fondly, "Those were the days" she said, "but the Borg could always come back you know."  "No" said Riker flatly, "this is a parody, they'll probably change the name to Bork or Bored or something like that, they wouldn't be the *real* Borg" Riker's communicator chirped.  "Info to Riker.  Sir! an exciting plot development has occurred!" said Info. Riker decided to confuse every explanation of onboard communications by tapping the communicator twice to open a channel and once to close it.  "There" he said to Guinan. "That should keep rec.arts.startrek.tech busy for the next two weeks."

[Scene 3 Bridge again, Riker walks in, Pickirk stands in front of screen.  Extra's in there usual place, franticly pressing buttons like always, further examination would reveal that they were trying to find the terminal's on switch]

"Captain we are receiving a distress message from the planet Scene-4" said Pier, "On Screen, Mr Worf" said Pickirk, hardly containing his excitement.  "My  name is Pier sir" growled Pier "Worf, Pier same thing isn't it?" replied Pickirk.  Pier managed to press this episodes 'on screen' switch, last week it was the self destruct button and next week it would pour the coffee, Pier had learnt long ago that detailed examination of the buttons label could prevent a terrible catastrophe.

It was the usual distress message, garbled and breaking up.  "Mr Pier, can you clean that image up?"  Pier hit the Dolby Noise Reduction button (previously the One touch timer record button), the picture leapt into focus.  "-elp, We are under attack from a unknown force of unknown strength, our children are dying, our women crippled, our civilisation flattened."  "You want our help then?" asked Pickirk.  The alien regarded Pickirk sarcasticly.  "No I want a pizza, what the hell do you think I want?!"  The transmission cut off abruptly.  "Ensign, set a course for Scene-4, Warp 1" said Jim-Luc.  "Isn't that a little slow sir?" asked the Cowardly ensign at the helm.

"You're new here aren't you?" asked Pickirk.  "No sir, I've just never had a speaking role before" replied the Ensign.  "Well ensign, you will realise that it doesn't matter if I say warp 9.3 or warp 1.3 we'll always get where we're going by the next scene." said Pickirk.  "May I say 'Engage' this time?" asked Riker.  "Of course, but I'll do the arm movement" replied Pickirk.  "Engage!"

[Scene 4 Firstprise circles insignificant little bluey green planet, who's ape descendant life forms ar-]

"Pier can you raise the planet?" asked Riker.  "No sir, but give me a lever and a place to stand and I could move it" replied Pier.  "Cut the philosophy Pier, you're a Klingon, you're just supposed to growl and say 'It is not honourable!' occasionally" said Riker.  Pier sulked.  "Will, now that you've finished browbeating Pier I think you can lead an away team to the planet, take the Doctor with you, and about 3 expendable security officers" said Pickirk.  "That will be a change sir, only 2 major characters on an away team, we usually send everybody" puzzled Riker.

"We need to spend the budget on the effects coming up, I can't afford the extra dialogue."  Riker nodded, and picking 3 shivering Security officers and Dr Beverly McCoy, ships chiropodist, they beamed down to the surface.

[Scene 5 Painted sunset and ruined city in background, 5 figures beam down in the foreground]

"So this is Scene-4" pondered Riker.  "Actually it's scene 5 sir" informed MSO1  (Miscellaneous Security Officer 1).  Riker glared.  "Set your phasers to maximum stun" said Riker.  "But sir what if we get attacked by a horrible beasty, stun might no stop them" said MSO1.  "I know, but it's a known fact that we never set our phasers to kill, not even in war, we can only hope that the beast we shoot will realise he/she has been stunned and die of embarrassment."  Beverly moved off, holding in front of her a beeping object,  "I think there is signs of civilisation over here" she said.  "What?  The tricorder tells you that?" asked Riker.  "No, the sign over there reads 'Scene 5-A 4 lines'"

[Scene 5-A]

An hour (well 4 lines but lets not get pedantic) later the team trudged into a smouldering village and began picking through the wreckage.  "Dr McCoy!" called MSO2 "I've found a survivor!"  Dr McCoy rushed to the wounded womans aid.  "How are her feet?" she asked.  MSO2 looked at the womens feet, "They're missing ma'am."  "Damn, there's not a lot I can do then."  Riker pushed MSO2 out of the way and began asking questions.  "Who did this to you?" he demanded.  "Look" she said "I wasn't expecting the Spanish inquisition."  There was a deathly silence as the cast waited.  Nothing, not even a whimper of approaching Cardinals.  The women started coughing blood, Almost ruining the G rating of ST:TP.  "Blue, they were blue" she gasped, then died.  Their communicators chirped.  "How is the survivor Beverly?" asked Jim-Luc.  "She's dead Jim" replied Beverly as she closed the poor women’s eyes, "Well at least she got a speaking role, that's more that MSO3 is getting" said Riker.  Riker and Beverly had a quick emotional scene, vital to character development, but otherwise uninteresting.  Pickirk's voice carried from their communicators.  "Will, Beverly, MSO1, MSO2, MSO3, you've got to beam up, there’s been developments."  "At once sir."  "Energise!"

[Scene 6 Exterior shot, Firstprise facing a cubic ship, about half the size of the Firstprise, cut to interior, Pickirk faces screen, viewers cannot see who he is talking to]

"I am Captain Jim-Luc Pickirk of the Federation Starship Firstprise NCC-1701D, and I demand to  know are you responsible for the murder of the planet Scene-4?"  "Yes" responded the alien voice There was a silence.  "Well" said Pickirk, "do you have anything more to say?"  "No" came the response.  "Nothing about assimilation, irrelevancy and the like?  "No."  There was a silence for a few minutes.  "Umm okay, who are you then?"

[Dramatic wide shot, audience in horror, the alien reveals his identity]

"I AM PAPA OF SMURF!  PREPARE TO BE SMURFED!!"

*Really, really, really, really dramatic chord.  And a bit of tension building classical music*

"Oh dear" said the cowardly ensign at the helm.  "Why do I feel were going to get our arses kicked?  "Belay that thought ensign!  We are the Federation, nobody cleans our clocks and gets away with it!  We're the good guys, we'll win" said Pickirk.  "You I'm not worried about, I'm a minor character, there's no Law of Conservation of Minor Characters is there?  I'm gonna die I just *know* it" he sobbed.  Riker ran onto the bridge, stared in horror at the 8 inch high blue figure in a red hat on screen who was patiently waiting for the end of the establishing monologue.  Pickirk continued talking:  "Look can't we talk this out like civilised Bipeds."  "No" came the response.  "They're not particularly creative in their dialogue, are they?"  remarked Beverly as she walked forward to Pickirk.  "No" said Papa of Smurf.  Jim-Luc motioned to Pier to cut the transmission, the horrible image of the red hatted smurf vanished.  "Will, your impressions" asked Pickirk  "They're short" he replied.  "No don't be rude, their just vertically challenged" said Beverly.  "Captain, the Smurf ship is arming it's weapons!" called Pier.  "Red Alert, raise shields, load torpedos, arm phasers, extinguish cigarettes, stow your tables in the upright position, women and children to the rear!" called Riker.  Above the Bridge screen the non-smoking and fasten seat belt lights lit up.

Hello Fellow Crewmates:

Here’s a puzzle for all of us who can remember the early 1960s.  Below are some of the episode titles from the original “Outer Limits” TV show.  However, at least six actors would go on to do “Star Trek” (TOS)—either as the stars, have a recurring role, or as a guest star.  Can you match the actor to the episode; and then to their “Star Trek” character?  I hope you enjoy my “Before They Became Famous Star Trek Characters” puzzle.  Good luck.  (Look for the answers in the next issue of the STARDATE.)
