These are the voyages of the Starship Jamestown . . . Her on-going mission: To strive to be recognized in our community as reflection of the ideals expressed in Star Trek. When other human beings are unable to help themselves, when the environment of our planet is endangered and needs assistance to replenish itself in order to sustain this and future generations, and to encourage others in extending our reach "From the sea to the stars" . . . the crew of the U.S.S. Jamestown will be the ones to say "LET ME HELP."

FCAPT John Winsley Reporting…
Greetings and Salutations…
ATTACK ON AMERICA
Well, Crew, a number of things have come up recently. But the first and main item on everyone's mind right now is the Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Although I did not have anyone I know personally at either place or on the airplanes, I do have family that knew people involved or who lost their lives that day. I made a "Call to Arms" via E-Mail to the crew and I want to thank all of the crew who went out and gave blood to the American Red Cross. So many people gave blood that week that the American Red Cross is now maxed out for blood. Please don't think that this means they do not need blood. In about 60 days the blood store will expire and it will need replacing. So if you have not given blood, call the American Red Cross and schedule an appointment. Also, there is something else you can do. Volunteer for the American Red Cross. My wife Cmdr Mary Ann Winsley and my son Cpl James Winsley have been, or are starting to volunteer for the American Red Cross. Read the CMO's report to find out more about what you can do. I asked all the command staff to not comment on the Terrorist Attack. Linda wrote up a couple of paragraphs in her report, so I have cut it out and pasted it in my report. Below are her comments.
Quoting our Security Officer Cmdr Linda Leonardy
"Just one more thing. With the recent terrorist attacks on our nation, please keep the victim’s families, our leaders, and the men and women in uniform in your thoughts and prayers. These attacks were committed by evil-minded thugs and cowards who have money, influence and power with the militant Muslim movement. Now is the time for all Americans to unite and stand up to the bullies who did these dastardly deeds, if only to prove to them that we won’t be intimidated or change our way of life!"
"We as a nation, have just cause to feel great anger towards those guilty of these attacks (or those harboring them.) Any organization or group of people that attacks non-combatants, i.e., innocent non-armed men, women, and children, deserves our contempt and anger. However, it would be wrong to persecute people because of their nationality, heritage, or religious beliefs. Let us not lose sight of the fact that America was founded on the belief and the right to worship, or not, as each individual sees fit. So, let’s concentrate on capturing and punishing those who are guilty of these heinous crimes. Now is the time to focus our energies on helping--helping families, friends, neighbors, and our nation. With God’s help, we can begin the process of recovering and healing from this tragedy. So please pray for our nation; and please volunteer any way you think you can. In this great time of need and as a ship in STARFLEET, let us try to live up to our motto of "Let me help." Thank you."
I have a couple more comments on what has happened and what will be happening. One I want every crewmember to remember is just because an American citizen is of Islamic faith (Muslim), they are still Loyal Americans and deserve our support. A large number of very famous American Muslims have spoken out against what has happened! All Loyal Americans of whatever faith or Ethnic Background have the full support of the USS Jamestown, her CO and XO, and command staff and her crew.
STARFLEET ACADEMY:
I want to Congratulate the CMO, Commander Mary Ann Winsley, for successfully completing the Officer’s Command College. Also I am working on the Flag Officer School and will have it complete very soon. There are a number of STARFLEET Academy courses out there that you, the crew can take. One, if you are a Warrant Officer and you complete the Officer’s Training School, it is an automatic promotion to Ensign. Second, if you have been a Commander on the USS Jamestown long enough to be eligible for promotion to Captain, you need to complete the Officer’s Command College. There are also a number of other STARFLEET Academy courses that you can take. For each course you complete you get two to three promotion points, and 36 promotion points earns you a promotion to the next rank. Think about it. These courses are fun and do not cost very much. Usually $2 or $3 plus self-addressed stamped envelopes. There are also Department Courses that can be taken: Security, Engineering, etc. If you want a list of the courses available, they are in each issue of the COMMUNIQUE you get every two months. Also, I will have a printout of courses at each meeting. If you complete a course (any STARFLEET Academy course), give me a copy of your course certificate so I can put it in my STARFLEET Report and record it for promotion points.
USS JAMESTOWN STAFF POSITION OPENING
Are you interested in promotion? Do you want to be a LT Commander or LT but you just joined the ship? There are a number of positions open on the ship or will be opening soon. The constitutional amendments all passed, which will create a new department. Cmdr Eric VanArsdale will take over as the Chief of the Services Department. This will create an opening for Chief of Operations. Also Other Senior Staff positions open are: Commandant of the Cadet Corps and Chief Petty Officer of the Command. Junior Staff positions open are: Assistant Chief of Engineering, Assistant Chief of Services and Assistant Chief of Medical. If you are interested in a Senior Staff position on the USS Jamestown contact the XO, Commander Marilyn Romero, or me. If you are interested in one of the open Assistant Department Chief positions, contact that particular department chief.
VISIT WITH THE USS MIRAMAR, NCC-2210
During the weekend of September 7, 8 and 9, 2001, I traveled to San Diego California for the Naval Reserves. While there for the weekend I was able meet with other STARFLEET members in the area. The local chapter of STARFLET is the USS Miramar. I met the CO of the USS Miramar, Capt Gaye Holder, her XO and Son at a local restaurant in the Historic District of Old Town San Diego. We ate at a Spanish restaurant then walked around that area together. We discussed STARFLEET and what was generally going on, and how we ran our ships. They are a small STARFLEET chapter of about 11 members. Whenever I travel I try to find out if there is a local STARFLEET chapter in the area I can get together with. I have visited Admr Carolyn Donner and the USS Jurassic and the USS Nebula in the past during my travels. I would like to encourage other members of the crew to do the same. It is always a lot of fun.
NEW DEPARTMENT AND UPDATED CONSTITUTION
As I said earlier in my report, all the constitutional amendments passed. We have a new department, "Services," and we will be issuing updates to your handbook at the next meeting. Also, we will be issuing and updating the Constitution and By Laws very soon. If you are interested in transferring to the new department, contact Commander Eric VanArsdale. He has created some very interesting positions.
Well, that’s it. Crew, keep up the good work.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S LOG:
STARDATE 10109.23
CAPTAIN MARILYN ROMERO
RECORDING. . .
Greetings, crew of the Mighty Jamestown! Our 19th Anniversary Dinner was a huge success, even though we were all saddened and angry over the terrible events of September 11th, a day that none of us will ever forget. FCAPT John Winsley called for a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims. Afterward, Christine Woods led the crew and guests in singing "God Bless America." After dinner, the mood lightened, with Ron Romero emceeing a Trivia Contest. The questions were mostly Star Trek, with a couple of Star Wars and Babylon 5 questions thrown in for good measure. Matt Burdette won First Prize, an engraved plaque with an autographed picture of Ethan Phillips (Neelix). Jason Schreck came in second, and won an autographed picture of Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi).
Several of our crewmembers were promoted, either at the Anniversary Dinner, or shortly thereafter: Lori Blackwell to Ensign, Heath and Tira Lerew to Lieutenant Junior Grade, Ron Romero to Lieutenant, and Mike Romero to Major. Jason Schreck was promoted to Colonel and Marilyn Romero (amazingly!) was promoted to Captain. Interestingly, Jimmy Winsley has decided to enter the enlisted ranks, and upon his own request, was DEMOTED to Corporal!
The following awards were presented:
GOOD CONDUCT: David Bock, Matt Burdette, Mark Defrancisco, Linda Leonardy, Zack Lerew, and Clay Oliver
AWARD OF MERIT: Paul Payne and Jimmy Winsley
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Lori Blackwell, Heath Lerew, Mike Romero, and Ron Romero
COMMENDATION: Ray Goodman and Eric VanArsdale
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD: Richard Hewitt and Tira Lerew
SUPERIORITY IN SERVICE AWARD: Jason Schreck and Lee Vitasek
RODDENBERRY AWARD: John Winsley, Mary Ann Winsley, and Marilyn Romero
SCHOLASTIC ACHEIVEMENT AWARD: Jimmy Winsley
FIVE YEAR AWARD: Lori Anne Joyner, Eric VanArsdale and Lee Vitasek
TEN YEAR AWARD: Mona Wallace, Paul Payne, John Winsley, Mary Ann Winsley, and Jimmy Winsley
LETTER OF APPRECIATION: Steve Thomas
Also, Rick Wise of the Iron Triangle Fleet presented several awards to members of the Jamestown. First, Mary Ann Winsley was knighted; she was given the Order of the Princess’ Trust. Then I was knighted, I was given the Order of the Imperial Star. Both of us are now known as "Dame" that is equivalent to the male’s title of "Sir." Also Richard Hewitt was given the Order of the Red Lion and was made the Chief of Staff for the Third Fleet of the Iron Triangle. Lee Vitasek was made the Chief of Staff for Cruiser Squadron 7. (See the picture page for a picture of the awards.)
Although it seems like years ago considering recent events, the Romero and Winsley families attended the Shore Leave convention in Baltimore this past July. We all had a great time. I was particularly looking forward to meeting the exceptionally handsome Bruce Boxleitner, but unfortunately, I was pulling Klingon Jail Duty when he was appearing and did not get to meet him. Luckily for me, however, my husband Ron stood in line for me and got an autograph. My son Mike, imaginative as ever, entered the Masquerade dressed as a Klingon Gene Simmons (of the rock group Kiss). Since it is impossible for me to describe how he looked in this getup, look for a photo elsewhere in this issue of the STARDATE. As they say, a face only a Mother could love! Some of us also attended a seminar on creating Haunted Houses, which we hope will be of great help with our own Haunted House at the VASC in October.
Well, I guess that’s all I have to report for now.
God Bless America!

COMM Richard W. Hewitt,
Recording . . .
Well, I am finding it hard to think of something to write about after what happened at the WTC and the Pentagon. I just wish the whole world would start thinking like Star Trek and get along together. In the last issue I added a block that had the normal date and what volume and issue it was. Well I had put the wrong volume number on it; it is the 19th volume not the 18th. Sorry for the mix up, since the STARDATE is one year younger than the Ship itself.
I would like to acknowledge the Ships that are part of our newsletter exchange program. They are: "The Short Circuit," USS MAAT in Virginia Beach, VA; "The Observer," USS CEYLON in St. Louis, MO; "The Legend," USS ATLAS in St. Ann, MO; "Tikopai Express," USS TIKOPAI in San Jose, CA; and "Halo & Flame" (this is an e-mail newsletter only), USS ANGELFIRE, Phoenix, AZ. I for one enjoy reading the newsletters from the other ships. If I missed anybody, I apologize and I will try to get it into the next issue.
If you have some pictures you would like to see in the STARDATE, just get them to me and I will see if I can use them in the next issue. You can give them to me as a normal picture, or if you can scan them and send them to me, I will have a head start on getting them into the newsletter.
As always, I need your stories, artwork, and reports turned in to me NO LATER THAN THE 20th OF THE MONTH PRIOR TO PUBLICATION. For those dates just check the first column on the 2nd page. It is very easy to get your reports, stories, and artwork to me. 1) Just give it to me at a meeting. Please type it, or put it on a disk. If on a disk, please have it formatted for a PC and save it as a text file (*.txt). 2) E-mail it to VEKMA@JUNO.COM (this is our XO Marilyn Romero's email address). Once she has reviewed it, she will send it to me.

108th MSG OIC, Reporting. . .
There's not a whole lot to report this month. Several of our Marines were in attendance at the ship's anniversary dinner. I would like to congratulate Mike Romero on his promotion to Major, as well as receiving the Cadet Legion of Arms from the SFMC. And I'd also like to congratulate Clay Oliver on receiving the Cadet Legion of Arms Award, and Jimmy Winsley for receiving the Klingon Service Award. That's about all for this month, and any new members who haven't picked a department please see me at one of the meetings and I'll show you all the marines have to offer. I think many people would be surprised at the wide range of jobs available to crewmembers in the Marine Department.

CHIEF ENGINEERING OFFICER'S REPORT
Stardate: 10109.13
CMDR Lee Vitasek Reporting
Well, it's me again, gang, your Chief Engineer and his trusty (?) sidekick, Scotty. There are a few things going on in the Engineering Department. For one thing, I have decided to apply to the Academy for another course. This time, I'm going to try my hand at Flag Officer's School. Naturally, Scotty just about doubled over laughing when I told him what I was taking, but I'm going to give it a try anyway.
Region 1 has a new RDC, Captain Allen Owens, and I have been in contact with him already. I have asked him if he needed someone to fill the ARDC position. He stated that he probably would, but it will be maybe in October or November before he would know for sure. I applied for the position anyway. I don't know if I will get the position or not, but we'll see what happens.
Captain Owens has asked me if the Jamestown was involved with the EROR 1/A Project. I am unfamiliar with the project, but I am trying to get some information on it, and I will let everyone know more when I find out more myself.
Well, that's all I have for the time being. Until next time, Qa'pla!
CMDR Lee Vitasek, signing off.

Chief of Security Reporting. . .
Hello Fellow Jamestowners:
I wish to begin by welcoming some assigned new members to my department: Richard Crum, Mel Frizzell, Sam Ketner and Lexine Walker. SURPRISE! I bet you didn’t know that John had assigned you to my department. Well, he did. So, welcome aboard.
Also, I would like to welcome David Bock to the Security Department. David will be my Assistant Chief of Security. He’ll be attending the Staff meetings in my place, since I can’t attend them. I plan to talk to him about starting up the Security Journal again. However, that will have to wait until he’s back in town. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause my new members; however, my computer is busted and I don’t have a way to produce a newsletter by myself.
I also am making color IDs for members of the Security Department. The only problem I have is getting some color copies made of the master plates. I also need a small, color head shot of members who are interested in getting the IDs (they’re free.) All I ask is that you please be patient, as I’m not exactly sure when they’ll be available.
The Jamestown Security Department does have a mascot and a motto. The mascot is Marvin the Martian and his dog K-9. Our motto is: "STARFLEET Security—no longer rednecks in red shirts!" I’m open to any suggestions concerning the Security Department. If you wish to contact me, you can do so via "snail mail" at the following address: (Sorry, I don’t have a phone or email address.)

SERVICES DEPARTMENT REPORT
CHIEF SERVICES OFFICER
Commander Eric VanArsdale
Dear Crew.
You may remember me as the Chief Operations Officer, but I am also taking command of the recently created Services Department as well. I wanted to take a few minutes to explain what the Services Department will be handling for the club.
The Services Department is in charge of crew recreational and leisure events and activities as well as some personnel services, and is divided into four divisions: Recreation Services, Quarter Master Services, Food Services and Personnel Services.
Recreation Services handles set up of events, such as parties, picnics and dinners, as well as supplying entertainment to such events.
Quarter Master Services handles all supplies for picnics, parties and dinners, with the exception of any food that is to be at that event.
Food Services handles the set up of all food items, and in the case of a pot luck affair, coordinates with the members as to who is going to bring what.
Personnel Services aides the Third Officer with new crew orientation to the different departments on the ship, and helps the new members choose a department and position.
If anyone has any questions about the Services Department, or wants to take a position in the Services Department, contact me after the meeting or e-mail me at pcv46@mindspring.com.

TREASURER'S REPORT
Stardate: 10109.17
CMDR Lee Vitasek Reporting
How time flies! Can you believe it's time once again for a good ol' Treasury Report? Oh well, here goes.
This past Saturday evening, September 15th, proved to be an evening in which everyone had a grand time at the Jamestown's 19th annual anniversary dinner. We had 42 people in attendance--several from as far away as Portsmouth and Lynchburg. We're glad everyone had a blast.
Presently in the Treasury, we have a balance of $591.34 in the checking account and $50.00 in Petty Cash. The anniversary dinner price per person for the meal turned out to be only $13.00 instead of $16.00, so it was decided at the general meeting on Sunday, September 16th that the $3.00 difference in price would be added to what other donations were collected and send it to the Red Cross. The amount that will be sent to the Red Cross will be $186.22. I would like to thank everyone who donated.
Well, that's all I have for the moment. So, until next time, farewell.
CMDR Lee Vitasek signing off.

STARDATE: 10109.26
Commander Mary Ann Winsley Reporting . . .
Hi Crew.. Well, it has been another busy three months. I want to talk to you about helping others. I know a number of the crew has gone out and given blood or tried to give blood. There is another thing you can do if you can't give blood, or right now the Red Cross is just about maxed out for storage because so many people have given blood. My best friend and I have decided to volunteer for the American Red Cross. Also my son Cpl James Winsley has been volunteering this summer for the Red Cross. Below is information from the American Red Cross on Volunteering and helping America. Think about it!
HELP AMERICA AND VOLUNTEER FOR THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
Each year over one million Americans serve as Red Cross volunteers serving local community needs… helping people in emergencies, providing half the nation's blood supply, teaching first aid and CPR courses, delivering emergency messages to members of the military, organizing programs for the elderly, for the youth…
Red Cross volunteers work directly with people, serve on boards of directors, serve as managers, advisors, and provide behind the scenes support.
Be a Red Cross volunteer! Helping others feels good, and helps you feel good about yourself. Your local Red Cross can work with you to provide rewarding experiences, opportunities to utilize your talents, or provide training to help you serve your community.
If you are ready to volunteer…
Find the Red Cross unit nearest your home or work by entering your Zip Code in the Find your Local Red Cross feature on the left of your screen (once you have logged in to the Red Cross Web Site listed below). Over 1000 local Red Cross units serve communities across the country. Or… Review current volunteer opportunities in over 100 communities listed the American Red Cross VolunteerMatch.org Website http://redcross.volunteermatch.org. Or…Check out current volunteer opportunities at American Red Cross national headquarters and leadership volunteer opportunities around the country. http://www.redcross.org/services/volunteer/opportunities/vol.html. Or…Visit the local Red Cross unit Website for your community. Note: Many Red Cross units that have local unit Websites provide information on how to volunteer, or provide a list of current local volunteer opportunities http://www.redcross.org/where/chapts.html. To learn more about volunteering with the American Red Cross, please visit our Volunteer Services pages.
Thank you for your interest! The American Red Cross delivers services in your community through the support of people just like you giving their time.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers, including drivers and navigators needed.
Health & Safety Instructors and Instructor Aides - volunteer to teach others how to save a life!
Public Support and Special Event Volunteers - volunteer to do special projects to support Red Cross services. Volunteers help write and mail the chapter newsletter quarterly. They help out at fundraising parties and work bingo.
VA Center volunteers - a long time Red Cross service, there's nothing better than giving back to vets who have served our country.

Excerpt from the Tidewater Norfolk VA Chapter
The American Red Cross is always in need of volunteers because someone is always in need of the American Red Cross.
The Red Cross needs thousands of volunteers to maintain our level of service to the community. These well trained, dedicated volunteers give of their time in many ways. They provide office assistance, lifesaving transportation services for blood products, teach our lifesaving courses, give blood, and are on the scene when disasters strike. We strive to make every volunteers' experience a rewarding one by matching skills and interests with our needs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Orientation
Every new volunteer has the opportunity to have an individual or group orientation to Red Cross programs and services. After a general orientation, the volunteer can then choose the area where they want to spend their time.
Training
Which area of service the volunteer would like to pursue determines the training needed. Some areas require more training, others less. We offer comprehensive training in everything from disaster services, health and safety education, or transportation services. Volunteers are also a vital part of our financial development efforts and can work various special events throughout the year with very little training needed. Your time and desires determine your training requirements.
Youth Volunteers
In recent years we have expanded our programs to include safety training for young people by young people. Peer level education courses include disaster education, babysitting safety, "Home Alone," a course for children whose parents work leaves them home alone after school, and much more. There are Red Cross clubs in several schools.
Military Community
We serve the military community in a wide variety of ways, including volunteers working in the pharmacy, medical clinics, and the dental clinic. Red Cross offers dental Assistance training for military dependents that wish to learn this skill. After a volunteer commitment is completed, many go on to get jobs in the field.
Volunteers and Donations are needed.

Captain John Winsley Reporting…
Hi Crew! Below is our present total for the Over Seas Coupon Project. We had a coupon cutting party in August 2001 but I have not had time to ship the coupons. They are probably old by now. Our next Coupon Cutting Party will be Oct 20, 2001. But there is a little problem. Please remember to bring canned goods to each meeting. Just bring a can or two. It adds up really quick. I would like to thank all the crew for all the hard work!

NEW SERIES "ENTERPRISE'
AND THE CRITICS
09.26.01 Dispatch:
Enterprise Scores with Critics
As Star Trek fans around the world count off the remaining hours to the premiere of Enterprise, television critics are delivering the highly anticipated series positive reviews.
Phil Rosenthal of the Chicago Sun-Times gives Enterprise 3 Stars, while soberly observing that while the original series offered a nation at war (Vietnam) "the cheery notion we had solved all those problems and eventually would be speeding across the universe in search of new ones... (Enterprise) coincides with the start of another era of uncertainty. And it again offers the promise we will emerge from today's challenges stronger, smarter and unshaken in our values and ambitions."
Rosenthal says "This Enterprise's voyages look to be satisfying, accompanied by a wide-eyed sense of adventure and a welcome sense of humor as these new space travelers are introduced to what we all know are phasers, transporters and the like," adding "Like Capt. Archer and the rest of Enterprise, it gets the job done."
The Hollywood industry trades also had good things to say about Enterprise, with Michael R. Farkash of the Hollywood Reporter calling the show "Another milestone from the network and production team with their hand firmly on the tiller of the Star Trek franchise," and noting that "The debut episode should bring a wide smile of delight to fans and even casual viewers of the galactic adventure epics." Farkash's enthusiastic review closes with an optimistic outlook for the show's prospects, noting that "Given the entertaining, engaging premiere, Enterprise looks like it ought to have a good, long run."
While Variety's review appeared only on the online version of the trade paper, critic Laura Fries was also positive, saying that Executive Producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga "continue to fulfill Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's promise to take viewers where no one has gone before."
Ron Wertheimer of The New York Times says Enterprise "gets back to basics, then improves on them." He also acknowledges the work of Berman and Braga, saying they "don't reinvent Gene Roddenberry's wheel, they just give it a spirited turn."
The New York Daily News gives Enterprise 3 & 1/2 Stars (out of four), with critic David Bianculli calls the new show's premise "inspired," and raves "This new UPN series bursts out of the starting blocks as the best Star Trek series since The Next Generation," and closing with "It ought to be an extremely successful 'Enterprise.' " Bianculli's counterpart at the New York Post, Linda Stasi gave the show 3 Stars, noting that the effects are "terrific," and that for the new crew, "It's all seat of the pants, and believe me, Archer... and the other fun crew members, have one helluva time of it."
Entertainment Weekly's Steve Daly gave the show a B-, and while he may have leapt to the wrong conclusion that Earth is represented by the United States in the future, he still called the premiere episode "intriguing" and can imagine the show "appealing to both Trekkies and nonfans of this pop-cultural institution," closing his review with a hearty "Count me in."
"Star Trek: Nemesis"
Gets Greenlight
09.24.01
The 10th feature film installment of the Star Trek franchise — with the working title of "Star Trek: Nemesis" — will go before the cameras on November 28 under the direction of Hollywood veteran Stuart Baird.
"Nemesis," written by "Gladiator" scribe John Logan (see related story here) and produced by Rick Berman, will reunite the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast, headed by Patrick Stewart ("Captain Jean-Luc Picard") and Brent Spiner ("Data"), for the fourth time in the theaters.
Baird previously directed "Executive Decision" in 1996 and "U.S. Marshals" — the sequel to "The Fugitive" — in 1998, but his credits during his 30-year career in Hollywood are varied. Most recently serving as executive producer on Paramount Pictures' "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," Baird has gained most of his film experience in the editing room. He has cut together more than 20 features, starting with "Tommy" followed by "The Omen," "Superman" and "Superman II," "Outland," "Lethal Weapon," "Demolition Man," "Maverick" and many others. As a director, though, Baird is also currently developing two other action-thrillers at Warner Bros, called "High Tide" and "Nowhere to Hide," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film's visual effects will be overseen by Digital Domain, a Venice, California facility that has produced digital shots for numerous Hollywood films including "Titanic," the upcoming "The Time Machine" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," according to Daily Variety. Mark Forker will be the visual effects supervisor.
As previously reported, Berman has revealed that the Romulans will be prominently featured in "Nemesis." He has also stated, "We've got, in my mind, the greatest Star Trek villain since Khan. John [Logan] was intent on creating a wonderful villain, and we've got a dozy."
The last two movie installments of Star Trek, "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek: Insurrection," were directed by cast member Jonathan Frakes ("Will Riker").
The release date for "Nemesis" is not yet confirmed.
Please note: All production information is subject to change.
STAR TREK MUSIC NEWS
Wise, Goldsmith Celebrate Sci-Fi Music
09.25.01 Dispatch:
Last Friday night, patrons of the Hollywood Bowl took an evening off from the real 2001 and allowed themselves to be whisked into the "2001" of the imagination. With movie clips showing on a giant screen perched upon its famous "shell," the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conducted by John Mauceri played the music of science fiction under the stars.
The program titled "The Big Picture — A Night at the Movies: 2001 and Beyond!" included themes from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," both of which were composed by Jerry Goldsmith, who was a special guest at the Bowl that night along with Robert Wise, director of "ST:TMP."
To a packed amphitheater, conductor Mauceri led the orchestra in a prelude that included an arrangement from "The Day the Earth Stood Still," a movie also directed by Wise. The prelude concluded with Goldsmith's themes from "Star Trek V," including "March of the Klingons." Afterwards, a clip from the original "Planet of the Apes" showed on the screen while the orchestra accompanied it with more Goldsmith-composed music. His score from "Alien" was also featured in the first half of the program.
After intermission, Mauceri re-took the stage dressed in a late 23rd-century Starfleet uniform (as first seen in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"), to the audience's delight. After introducing Wise, who stood from his box seat and waved at the enthusiastic crowd, Mauceri then began conducting the orchestra to 20 minutes of clips from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director's Edition." That version of the movie, which Wise has described as his "completed vision," will be released on DVD and in widescreen VHS on November 6 (see related story here).
Film clips and soundtracks from "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Star Wars" rounded out the evening, which the audience enjoyed so much Mauceri gave two encores (from "Star Wars" and its parody, "Spaceballs").
Joining Wise and Goldsmith at the Bowl that night were several members of the team that helped Wise realize his "Director's Edition": producer David C. Fein; restoration supervisor Michael Matessino; and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman. Jon Povill, who was associate producer on the original film, was also present with his wife Michele Billy-Povill, who served as assistant to "TMP" screenwriter Harold Livingston and appeared in the film as a lieutenant at the Epsilon IX monitoring station. Wise's wife Millicent and Goldsmith's wife Carol were also there.
UPDATE: Fellow visual effects designer Robert Abel, who also worked on "TMP," passed away on Sunday, September 23. Robert Wise Productions and STARTREK.COM extend their condolences to his family, friends and associates. Abel's family invites donations to be sent on his behalf to the American Red Cross to aid the families of victims of the Sept. 11 Loss, or to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
MORE STAR TREK NOMINATIONS FOR AWARDS
"Director's Edition" Already Nominated for Awards
09.26.01
It won't actually be released until November 6, but the DVD and widescreen VHS version of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director's Edition" is already garnering award nominations.
The first Video Premiere Awards has recognized "The Director's Edition" with nominations in four categories: Best Overall New Extra Features, Library Title (Paramount); Best New, Enhanced or Reconstructed Movie Scenes (David C. Fein, producer; Michael Matessino, restoration supervisor; Daren R. Dochterman, visual effects supervisor); Best Audio Commentary (Robert Wise, Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra, Jerry Goldsmith, Stephen Collins); and Best DVD Menu Design (1K Studios).
The awards, voted on by members of the Video Premieres Academy, recognize original creative work done specifically for premiere on video, both VHS and DVD. Titles considered for judging include those scheduled for release through December that were provided in advance.
"This is the first recognition of the artistic work being done for the most profitable of all media, homevideo," said Scott Hettrick, editor-in-chief of Video Business magazine. The award ceremony will take place October 23 at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, California. Video Business will donate 50% of all ticket sales and 50% of the money paid by sponsors to United Way's September 11th Fund.
The Video Premiere Awards also includes acting categories where a number of Star Trek alums are in contention. For Best Actor, Christopher Lloyd ("Kruge" in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock") is nominated for his work in "When Good Ghouls Go Bad." Kirsten Dunst ("Hedril" in "Dark Page") is up for Best Actress for "Lover's Prayer." Vying for Best Supporting Actor is Christopher Plummer ("Chang" in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country"), nominated for "Full Disclosure."
In addition, Roger Nygard, director and editor of "Trekkies," the Denise Crosby-hosted documentary about Star Trek fandom, is a nominee in the Best Screenplay category for writing "Suckers."
GEORGE TAKEI Appeals for Tolerance
09.18.01
George Takei ("Sulu") spent much of his childhood confined to internment camps as one of 120,000 Japanese-Americans who were rounded up and detained in the United States simply because of their race, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. In his many Star Trek convention appearances, Takei has often spoken about this blemish on American history in an attempt to raise awareness and help prevent such injustices from occurring again.
Now, in the wake of terrorist attacks on New York and Washington D.C. on September 11, 2001 — which is seen as the greatest act of war upon the United States since Pearl Harbor — Takei is appealing to Americans to make the distinction between those responsible for the atrocity and those loyal citizens who happen to be of similar ethnicity to the suspected terrorists.
In a special message on his official website, Takei praises the heroes who have shown "uncommon courage and humanity" in their attempts to save the victims of the World Trade Center and Pentagon disasters, and warns of the potent force that "a roused and united America can be."
And he believes that the government has learned from history. The nation's power "will be exercised with our American values intact," Takei writes. "Attorney General John Ashcroft forcefully stated that the target is the terrorist criminals and their associates — not Muslims, not Arabs, not Middle Easterners. Congress passed a resolution on Friday night to protect the rights of Muslims, Arab Americans and South Asian Americans. Unlike the racial hysteria that followed the Pearl Harbor bombing by Japan, when Americans of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated in American concentration camps solely because of their ethnicity, the Attorney General was very clear that race, religion and background will not be the focus of this campaign. It will be the evidence of criminality."
Unfortunately, that sentiment of tolerance is not shared across the board, he points out. "Deplorably, we still have dangerously ignorant hysterics among us in America. There have been shots fired into mosques, Arab American businesses painted with the word 'Die!' and reports of a Sikh person shot and killed in Arizona. These rednecks are no better than the terrorists. Their acts shame America and besmirch the glory of our Stars and Stripes. They, too, must be tried and punished — unlike the victims of their ignorant racism."
"Neither terrorism nor ignorance will stand in this America today," Takei concludes.
Takei joins Alexander Siddig ("Dr. Bashir") in expressing special sentiments regarding the historic events that took place last week (see related story here). "George has received an unprecedented amount of e-mail following the attack in part because of Star Trek fans' knowledge of his family's incarceration in the U.S. internment camps during World War II and his reputation as a community activist who defends civil liberties," said a spokesman for Takei. "He wanted to post the message as it was impossible to respond to every e-mail individually."
MESSAGE FORM ALEXANDER SIDDIG DS9
09.12.01
The following message from Alexander Siddig (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's resident doctor, Julian Bashir) goes out to Star Trek fans and anyone touched by yesterday's terrible events.
Dear All,
If Christmas is a time when we get together to celebrate the family, and Thanksgiving marks a day of gratitude for the community – New Year's a time of national cohesion ... then I hope history will remember Tuesday the eleventh of September 2001 as the day when humanity as a race came together to fight our common enemy within – our own messed up brothers and sisters who share this world with us.
I have been glued to the television these past two days, punching redial on my telephone every ten minutes or so for six hours yesterday until the international phone lines cleared up, just waiting to hear news of my little boy and his mother and his brother, all of whom I was worried about. During these past two days I have heard and seen gestures and moments of such courage and selflessness that I simply had to write to you, the only group of Americans I know (personally in many cases) if for no other reason than to remind you all that you are in sympathetic company all over the world. Your nation is not alone. The British Prime Minister has said today that this was not just an attack on the American people but on the free world. Leaders from nearly every country have unanimously stepped up to the plate to try and share your grief, offer their support and burden the responsibility of exacting some kind of revenge on the sad and lost people who did this.
I like to think that the very few people who were in the vicinity and have so far survived these attacks have set an example for all of us. Their calmness, their understanding of what needed to be done, their ability to stop running and turn to help someone less fortunate than themselves are an example of what every one of us on this planet are capable of. If America is the leader of the free world (and I believe it is) then these Americans have lead by example.
It isn't my place to tell any of you how to react – your own personal consciences will, no doubt, be your guides but I would like to add 'my two cents' to your discussions on this topic and beg you to remember that many of the people who are saddened and shocked by all this are people who will, in the days to come, seem like your enemies – people who had no part in this, who also have children and lovers and family. Many Islamic countries have condemned this action including aggressive states like Syria and Iran – even Palestine. I am not a Muslim nor indeed am I a Christian, I am just another person bumbling through life, trying to stay on my own two feet – and I am not an American, but I can hear what the rest of the world has to say about this tragedy and from what I can tell, the rest of the world is holding out a friendly, helping hand. It's possible that you may not need any other country's help – but the hand is still there.
I hope that when I see you again soon we can all say that our reactions to these atrocities have begun the process of putting an end to worldwide terrorism – not perpetuating it. I sincerely hope that none of your families have been personally marked by all this.

STAR WARS NEWS
August 7, 2001
Lucas Announces Episode II Title
Some of you are asking, "Episode II of what?" To those folks, we say: Welcome to the 21st century. Don't disturb the bats on your way out of the cave — oh, and we call that gigantic luminous orb "the sun."
The rest of you doubtless realize that Episode II means Star Wars, and the title of the next movie is going to be (drum roll) … Attack of the Clones.
We swear we're not using a Jedi mind trick to deceive you.
The momentous announcement was made Monday afternoon via StarWars.com, the franchise's official Web site, and in a special e-mail bulletin posted to fans registered with George Lucas' online empire.
Attack of the Extra Cheese
The new title has the same drive-in double feature, B-movie ring to it that was captured by 1999's Episode I — The Phantom Menace, and it would appear that the effect is entirely intentional. The official announcement posted at StarWars.com states that the new title "harkens [sic] back to the sense of pure fun, imagination, and excitement that characterized the classic movie serials and pulp space fantasy adventures that inspired the Star Wars saga."
Fans will recognize the title as a reference to the outbreak of the Clone Wars, a period first made mention of in Princess Leia's holographic plea to Ben Kenobi in 1977's Star Wars (and abundantly detailed in subsequent officially licensed Star Wars novels). It's been widely speculated since before filming began on The Phantom Menace that the Clone Wars would figure prominently in Lucas' expanded saga.
Online Wars Watchers React
In a posting at AintItCoolNews.com, Internet guru Harry Knowles says that he first heard the title after being awakened by a call from USA Today. Knowles goes on to say that his first reaction to hearing the title spoken was "immediate laughter. I never fully composed myself. I had had 2 hours sleep and I get hit with that? Laughter was the only possible response."
A few mouse-clicks away, Upcomingmovies.com's Greg Dean Schmitz further observes that, as happened with The Phantom Menace, Lucas has revealed a title that flies in the face of speculation shared by fans in recent months. (Prior to Monday's announcement, the most widely rumored title was The Shadow Falls.) Schmitz also wonders whether Lucas might have been inspired by the recent furor over human cloning.
It's believed that Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones will arrive in theaters on May 22, 2002, the Wednesday before Memorial Day.
LORD OF THE RINGS MOVIE
"THE RING BEARER"
"One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them.
One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."
For decades, the words above have ignited imaginations and shaped the dreams of more than 100 million readers around the globe. They were first read in 1954, when J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of The Ring, the first volume in his towering three-part epic, The Lord of The Rings, was published.
Tolkien’s work was to have a profound effect on generations of readers, defining for many the archetypal struggle between good and evil, and was voted in many worldwide polls as the "Book of the Century". It set the benchmark for the fantasy genre in its creation of an entirely new and thrillingly believable universe. It introduced an unforgettable hero — the hobbit Frodo Baggins — caught up in a war of mythic proportions in Middle-earth, a world full of magic and lore. Most of all, it celebrated the power of loyal friendship and individual courage, a power that may hold at bay even the most devastating forces of darkness.
Now, the legend that Tolkien wrought is finally being brought to life on the motion picture screen, an undertaking that has required nothing less than one of the most colossal movie productions ever embarked upon. The mythos, landscapes, and creatures Tolkien created are so awesome that it has taken more than four decades for cinema technology to reach the necessary level of sophistication to bring them to life. Such a vast project would require nothing less than a visionary to mastermind it. That visionary is Peter Jackson, who has embarked upon an unprecedented fete to make three motion pictures simultaneously to capture Tolkien’s soaring epic in its entirety.
For the past several years, Jackson and his devoted production team have been filming all over the spectacular landscapes of New Zealand. The result has been the deployment of a logistical operation reminiscent of a military campaign. A veritable army of artists — including digital wizards, medieval weapons experts, stone sculptors, linguists, costumers, make-up designers, blacksmiths and model builders — as well as an internationally-renowned cast of actors and literally thousands of extras have gathered to make this ambitious dream come true.
The result will be three separately released installments that will mark the return of "cliffhanger cinema" for the first time since the serial adventures of decades past.
The adventure begins on December 19, 2001 with The Fellowship of The Ring, which introduces to movie audiences the enchanted world of Middle-earth and its memorable inhabitants — men, hobbits, elves, dwarves, wizards, trolls and orcs.
In this part of the trilogy, the shy young hobbit Frodo Baggins inherits a ring; but this ring is no mere trinket. It is the One Ring, an instrument of absolute power that could allow Sauron, the dark Lord of Mordor, to rule Middle-earth and enslave its peoples. Frodo, together with a loyal fellowship of hobbits, men, a wizard, a dwarf and an elf must take The Ring across Middle-earth to the Crack of Doom, where it first was forged, and destroy it forever. Such a journey means venturing deep into territory held by the Dark Lord, where he is amassing his army of orcs. And it is not only external evils that the Fellowship must combat, but also internal dissension and the corrupting influence of The Ring itself. The course of future history is entwined with the fate of the fellowship.
New Line Cinema presents the first installment of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy: The Fellowship of The Ring starring (in alphabetical order) Sean Astin, Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Marton Csokas, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, and Elijah Wood.
The film is directed by Peter Jackson and produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Tim Sanders and Jackson, from a script by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Jackson. The executive producers are Mark Ordesky and Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
