Commanding Officer’s Report…

Stardate: 10012.31

Captain John Winsley Reporting…

It’s a Wonderful Life (Year)…

I recently watched one of my wife’s favorite movies, "It’s a Wonderful Life," and it reminded me that we have had a wonderful year. We have had lots of fun and did a lot of good things. We have had four coupon cutting parties and we processed and mailed over $19,000 worth of coupons this past year. We ran the Con Suite at Imagine Con and received a number of compliments on it. We participated in the March of Dimes Walk America in May 2000. We have attended a number of STARFLEET (and other clubs) ships’ dinners, parties, and meetings: the USS Maat, USS Powhatan, USS Chesapeake, USS Hiemdal and IKV Bat’Leth. I think we have had a really great year. We were presented a number of Regional/FLEET awards for the year 1999: STARFLEET Region One Decade Award, the 1999 Region One STARFLEET Gold Medal, the STARFLEET Communications for 1999 Annual Newsletter Contest Award, the 1999 STARFLEET Region One Certificate of Appreciation, and STARFLEET Region One Starship of the Year for 1999 Award. I would like to thank the whole crew for making this all possible. I believe we will receive a number of awards for the year 2000 and we will have a great year 2001. Keep up the great work.

On to Fleet News. As some of you know, the STARFLEET Commander elections are over and Les Rickard has won the election as STARFLEET Commander. For the most part you as regular members will not see much difference. There are a number of new people taking over Fleet positions in the Executive Committee, and hopefully they will do as good a job as the previous administration.

We have a major event coming up this month. At the Virginia Air and Space Center the "STAR TREK Federation Science Exhibit" is returning. It was previously here in 1996. See the press releases farther back in the STARDATE. We have two major events during the exhibit’s stay. The grand opening is January 27, 2001 and the Off World Festival is February 24, 2001. The guest for the Grand Opening is Marina Sirtis and the guest for the Off World Festival is Nichelle Nichols. We will need all available members with STARFLEET, NASA or Trek Uniforms to help out at these events. If you can help please contact either Cmdr Marilyn Romero or me.

Cmdr Scott Melrose still needs help with a Starship Schematic database he is working on. He needs someone with a computer with access to the internet. This is a great little project you could get involved with, it would not take up that much of your time, but you would earn promotion points. If you are interested e-mail Scott at: dragoneknight@hotmail.com.

Well that is it.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S LOG:

STARDATE 10012.27

Commander Marilyn Romero Reporting. . .

Greetings, crew of the Mighty Jamestown! I hope each and every one of you had a wonderful holiday. If you missed the Jamestown’s Christmas Party this year, you missed out on a great time. (Everyone assured me it was great—unfortunately, I missed it due to an illness. This was especially bad for me, as it was also my birthday.) Approximately $250.00 was raised during our annual auction.

Our big project this quarter was to create a Haunted House for the Virginia Air and Space Center’s annual Safe Halloween. It was a joint effort between the Jamestown and the Bat’Leth. It was a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. According to the Center, it was the best one yet.

In addition to our on-going activities, such as visiting area hospitals and cutting and saving coupons for our military overseas, we have adopted a woman from the local battered women’s shelter for the holidays. Thanks to the generosity of the Jamestown’s crew, she will have a happier and more comfortable holiday season.

Our next big project will be the grand opening of the re-vamped Federation Science exhibit at the VASC near the end of January. We will need all of you to help, so check out your costumes and uniforms, to make sure they are ready. This will be our best opportunity for recruiting new members in the upcoming New Year.

Well, that’s all I have for now. Live Long and Prosper!

CMDR Marilyn Romero signing off. . .

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

STARDATE: 10012.27

COMM Richard W. Hewitt,

Recording . . .

Well, here is another issue and another year. It is time to look ahead to the future. The Annual Region 1 Awards will be starting up soon. My staff and I will pick one of the issues from last year to be our entry to the "Newsletter Contest." (I think we might have a good chance to win the top award this year).

In this issue I will be putting pictures I took at some of the Ship's activities over the past few months. So, if you have some pictures you would like to see in the STARDATE, just get them to me and I will see if I can use them in the next issue. You can give them to me as a normal picture, or if you can scan them and send them to me, I will have a head start on getting them into the newsletter.

I would like to acknowledge the Ships that are part of our newsletter exchange program. They are: "The Short Circuit," USS MAAT in Virginia Beach, VA; "Czar'ak Log," USS CZAR'AK in Richfield, MI; "The Observer," USS CYDONIA in St. Louis, MO; "The Legend," USS ATLAS in St. Ann, MO; "The Talon," USS NIGHTHAWK in Colonial Hgts, VA; "Tikopai Express," USS TIKOPAI in San Jose, CA; and "Halo & Flame" (this is an e-mail newsletter only), USS ANGELFIRE, Phoenix, AZ. I for one enjoy reading the newsletters from the other ships. If I missed anybody, I apologize and I will try to get it into the next issue.

In this issue I have no story to use. That brings me back to the fact that I always am in need of stories from you, the members of the JAMESTOWN. So, please put those pens to paper and write those stories for the STARDATE.

As always, I need your stories, artwork, and reports turned in to me NO LATER THAN THE 20th OF THE MONTH PRIOR TO PUBLICATION. For those dates just check the first column on the 2nd page. It is very easy to get your reports, stories, and artwork to me. 1) Just give it to me at a meeting. Please type it, or put it on a disk. If on a disk, please have it formatted for a PC and save it as a text file (*.txt). 2) E-mail it to VEKMA@JUNO.COM (this is our XO Marilyn Romero's email address). Once she has reviewed it, she will send it to me.

Chief Medical Officer’s Report:

Hi Everybody,

I want to talk about one of my major projects I do all year long. I volunteer to drive people who have cancer, but do not have transportation to their doctor’s appointments or cancer treatments. I would like to encourage the crew to do this. If you are interested you can contact the local American Cancer Society Office at 591-8330. There is a two-hour course that you need to take that will teach you everything you need to know about this. This is not a hard thing to do. Just being on call to drive someone once a month is a great help.

Thanks….

Well, it's me again, just like a bad check, or should I say a bad matter-anti matter containment field? There's not much to report this time around. I was in Florida in October with a friend and had a blast. I kind of hated to come back to Virginia.

I attempted to make an appointment for the JimmyT to visit CHKD in December, but was shot down. The person I spoke with told me that they were booked up through the end of the year. She asked if I would call back in December to set up a date in January 2001. So, I'll try again in December.

Well, that's all I have for now, so until next time, Qa'pla.

Well, here it is reporting time again. Since this will come out in January, I hope everyone has had a happy holidays. I don't have much to report this month, but there are a couple of things. First of all I'd like to welcome Adam Zalonis to the 108th. This now brings our total members to seven. And as Batallion OIC, it is also my happy duty to welcome the 100th MSG to the 7th Batallion of the first Brigade. They are stationed onboard the USS Athena. This now brings the 7th Batallion to a total of four units. And last but not least, take a look at my article "Challenger 15 Years Later" in this issue of the Stardate.

STAMPEDE REPORT

STARDATE: 10012.27

COMM Richard Hewitt

During the last three months I have received stamps from John Winsley, Lee Vitasek, Ray Goodman and myself again. I have collected about 187 stamps this period. To date we have collected about 785 stamps (about 250 stamps were used at the MAAT’s Casino Night). I will be sending in about 535 stamps directly to STARFLEET in January (after our meeting, hoping to add more stamps). With the holiday season just finished, I hope you have saved all of your stamps and have your friends save them also. I had hoped we could have collected at least 1000 stamps for the year. But we missed this goal this year, so I am hoping we will be able to collect about 1000 more stamps for the next year. I know we can do it. So start collecting those stamps!

Commander Mary Ann Winsley and Ensign Tira Lerew Reporting…

Greetings Crew,

Below is a message from ENS Tira Lerew on the donations for Christine and the Battered Women’s Shelter. Tira and I would like to thank the crew for their help. We will be collecting again for the Battered Women’s shelter in May 2001.

To the Crew of the USS Jamestown:

The U.S.S Jamestown donated 323 items at a value of $993.31 to Christine and for the general use of the shelter and shelter families. We had 126 various craft items or craft decor donated for general use, 4 air
fresheners, 15 soaps, 2 posters, 11 packs of gum, 1 pair earrings, 6 Maalox, 1 box frosted flakes, 1 pack of cookies, 1 cake mix, 1 tuna helper, 1 hamburger helper, 1 entertainment center, 1 book shelf, 1 scarf, 1 towel, 1 shower curtain, 1 sweater, 1 sweatshirt, 2 pairs pants, 1 skirt, 1 sweater, 3 large canned food, 2 large juice, 2 jars peanut butter, 13 cans of veggies, 1 tomato sauce, 1 box hot cocoa mix, 1 girl’s
mini appliance toy set, 1 Barbie, 2 packs of 5 Hot Wheel cars, 1 toy space play set, 1 yoyo, 2 packs of glow in the dark stars, 1 truck play set, 1 extra wide slot toaster, 2 large boxes of condiments, 2 large cans of
peanuts, 1 lunch pail, 9 CD's, 1 brush pack, 6 window clings, 2 schedule books, 2 calendars, 17 pens, 1 nail polish, 6 USA buttons, 4 USA key chains, 5 pins, 2 key chains, 1 diary, 7 packs of gum, 10 calcium tablet rolls, 2 hair dyes, 1 T.V., 1 alarm clock radio, 1 queen flat sheet, 1 coffee maker, 2 baking dish sets, 1 Rubbermaid Serving Saver, 1 Nintendo play set with 14 games, 1 Coca Cola Barbie, 1 Jet, 1 Pony Play set, 1 Coat, 1 Sweatshirt, 1 pair gloves, 1 Body gift pack, and 1 double stroller.

Below is a copy of the thank you note Christine wrote for us.

"To my angels: Thank you from my heart for all the wonderful, thoughtful gifts you so lovingly gave- everything so perfect! I was so touched and I am so very grateful for everything I have on this Christmas Day. Everything is going to be put to very, very good use as soon as I get my apartment. The Lord was good to me today! Again, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and may you have a very happy New Year."

From a VERY thankful Christine

I was at the shelter Christmas morning and Christine was so excited about all of the presents! She exhausted herself half way through opening them and had to rest for awhile. She wanted me to pass on a special thanks to the donor of the coat. So, for Marilyn, Christine loves the wonderfully warm coat, she's even been wearing it inside because the shelter is chilly. I thank the club for participating in this; it meant so much to me to see Christine so happy and to know that all of you were the reason.

Thank you... Ensign Tira Lerew and
Commander Mary Ann Winsley

MEMBER’S CONTRIBUTION

Challenger 15 Years Later

Submitted by LTCOL Jason Schreck

"We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey, waved good-bye and slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God." President Ronald Reagan, January 28, 1986

Fifteen years ago former President Reagan ended his speech to the nation with this statement. Instead of giving his state of the union address as he was scheduled to do that night, he was consoling a nation on the loss of seven heroes. Earlier that day this space shuttle Challenger had exploded 73 seconds after liftoff causing the loss of the vehicle and its seven member crew.

This year like most, many people will just let January 28th pass without a second thought. This year the 15th anniversary falls on Super Bowl Sunday so most people won't care. But this coming Sunday as you watch your football game and the endless hours of pregame shows, and eat lots of junk food and have your parties, take a minute to remember seven heroes: Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and the woman who was to be the first teacher in space, Christa McAuliffe. While most people let the day pass without notice, remind people of what happened this day so we will never forget. They may have given their lives, but the cause of space exploration goes on. And the space program is better and safer today because of this tragedy.

"The cast and crew of Star Trek wish to dedicate this film to the men and women of the spaceship Challenger whose courageous spirit shall live to the 23rd century and beyond." Dedication to the crew of Challenger prior to Star Trek IV

Hampton, VA--Anyone who is looking to boldly go where no one has gone before need not look any further than the Virginia Air & Space Center. Visitors can beam up to the Starship Enterprise when it docks at the Virginia Air & Space Center as part of the new traveling exhibit Star Trek: Federation Science, January 27, 2001 through April 30, 2001. Star Trek: Federation Science returns to the Center for a second run with some updated components, after a record-breaking showing in 1996. The exhibit offers visitors the opportunity to seek out new life and new civilizations utilizing the popular and fascinating phenomena of Star Trek®. Through familiar characters from the Star Trek: The Next Generation™ crew, Star Trek: Federation Science promotes science and technology literacy among people of all ages. Star Trek: Federation Science contains more than 40 exhibits and display areas grouped by themes portraying the science of the Enterprise in more than 4,000 square feet of exhibit space. The exhibit takes disciplines of science, like astronomy and physiology, and applies their principles to practical applications, from propulsion systems and medical science to life support systems. Visitors can step onto the realistic replica of the Bridge, complete with a giant view screen, and take the helm. Missions will vary from transferring orbits and answering distress calls, to navigating through asteroids, complete with the occasional space battles and exploding stars. Those who report to Engineering will investigate matter VS anti-matter and discover how we can create artificial gravity in a micro-gravity environment. How is modern medicine similar to Star Trek's 24th century medicine? A visit to Sick Bay will illustrate the similarities and differences of medicine today with that of the future. The Sick Bay also shows today's version of a tri-corder that measures pulse rate and blood oxygen levels. Then it is off to the transporter room to join an Away Team and beam down to another planet as visitors learn about virtual reality technology and see how they would look as a Klingon. Lastly, guests can visit the science stations to learn about life support and see how working and living in space on the Enterprise compares to today's astronauts on the International Space Station.

For those Star Trek fans who like to revel in the past, the exhibit features original Star Trek artifacts including costumes worn by William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, and others. Also on display are original props like tri-corders, phasers, life-size alien models, medical instruments

and scenes from favorite episodes.

Visitors should set their coordinates for the Virginia Air & Space Center, located at 600 Settlers Landing Road in Downtown Hampton, to participate in the Starship Enterprise's next mission. Actor Ray Walston dead at age 86

From CNN.com.

Trekkers will remember him as the Starfleet Academy's sagacious groundskeeper Boothby, the wisest man Jean-Luc Picard ever knew.

January 2, 2001 Web posted at: 1:53 PM EST (1853 GMT)

Beverly Hills, California (CNN) -- Award-winning character actor Ray Walston, who donned antennas to become Uncle Martin on the 1960s TV sitcom "My Favorite Martian,"

died Monday. He was 86. Walston, whose character gave space aliens a benign face in the 1963-66 series, died of natural causes at his Beverly Hills home with his wife at his side, said his agent.

Walston was known for stage and film work as well as his appearances on the small screen. He won a Tony in 1956 for his performance as the devil in the Broadway show "Damn Yankees." Memorable film roles included his portrayal as an unfaithful insurance executive in "The Apartment" (1960), and his only starring role in "Kiss Me, Stupid" (1964), with Dean Martin and Kim Novak. He also appeared as a teacher in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

Walston won two Emmys, in 1995 and 1996, for his recurring role on the TV show "Picket Fences." His last appeared on TV in 1999 on an episode of CBS "Touched By An Angel."

The Borg Sue Apple Over Cube

Author: Unknown

Copied from the Internet by Capt John Winsley

8/2/2K: Late Tuesday evening, Apple Computer was served legal papers by the Borg. They are suing Apple over the shape and name of their newest computer, the Power Mac G4 Cube.

"Resistance is futile," said the Borg spokesdrone. "We pioneered the cube concept millennia ago in the Delta Quadrant, as it allows the most efficient use of space and communication among segments of the collective." Despite disparities in size, purpose, and overall design, the Borg intend to fully push their claims. "The similarities show Apple has been studying our collective. Their cube is protected in a transparent casing, much as our more advanced technology protects our cubes with force fields. Like the Borg, the G4 Cube is designed to communicate without wires.

"Apple has shown their ability to assimilate both Microsoft Windows and Linux for use on their computers. Their ability to assimilate other operating systems overshadows that of Bill Gates to assimilate businesses and individual computer users. We believe that Steve Jobs intends to assimilate all competition, then begin a cybernetic collective on your planet that may grow to rival our own. "We wish nothing less than the complete assimilation of Apple Computer."

Observers believe that the G4 Cube's use of a single processor will be a strong argument in Apple's favor, since the Borg cube uses massively parallel biological processors. Further, the fact that AirPort is an option means that a stock Cube cannot communicate wirelessly, also reducing parallels with the Borg cube. Additional arguments Apple is expected to use include use of primitive devices such a mouse, keyboard, and microphone for input. This is in stark contrast to the Borg's use of nanoprobes and other technology that readily interfaces with biological units.

In discussions with Apple supporters, the Borg spokesdrone was heard to say, "We will not sit idly by. They are trying to exert their marketing pressure; they will be assimilated." Numerous sources have indicated that shipping dates for the G4 Cube have slipped. Speculation exists that this is, in fact, tied to possible legal action or invasion by the Borg. An Apple representative had no comment on the matter. More information will be obtained as further details become available.

Funny USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Captain’s Log
Author: Unknown
Copied from the Internet my Capt John Winsley
Web Page: http://www.humorspace.com/humor/stories/strek.htm

See if you can figure out where the crew of the Enterprise are this time:

...Let us suppose that the Enterprise is doing some sort of research mission to an unknown planet. I think the Captain's Log would be worth a look:

Captain's Log, Stardate 54324.5: Starfleet Command hasdirected the Enterprise to do a preliminary exploration of planet --- in advance of a full research team. Scanners report the atmosphere to be breathable, but are receiving confusing readings with regard to life forms. I am beaming down with a landing party composed of all our chief officers except for poor Scotty.

Supplement: Redshirt Riley has received a head injury, apparently while exploring under a high rock shelf. He reports only hearing a loud sound and jumping before being struck. After examination by Dr. McCoy he has been judged capable of continuing duty.

Supplement: We have encountered an alien creature on this planet. [There you go again, Jim. Remember that you’re the alien here.] While it does not itself seem menacing, an unfortunate occurrence took place when it was present. Specifically, on my orders Lt. Sulu drew his phaser. The creature disappeared leaving a puff of smoke, immediately following which a loud noise was heard next to Sulu. Sulu fired, hitting Ens. Chekov. Oddly enough, although Sulu's weapon was set to stun, Chekov was also covered with a black powder similar to soot. Mr. Chekov has been sent back to the ship for examination and quarantine.

Stardate 54326.2, Mr. Spock reporting: Tricorder readings indicate that the creature we encountered earlier is constantly moving at great speed over the surface of the planet. We have encountered the creature once again. In an attempt to slow the creature for study, I attempted to fire on it. The creature, however, appeared to move faster than the phaser beam. Regretfully, the beam struck an outcropping of rock above the Captain's head, causing it to break off and fall. Although it appears that several tons of rock fell squarely on the Captain, he was driven straight into the ground but apparently not seriously injured, though stunned. The Captain has been beamed up to Sickbay, leaving me in command of the research party.

Captain's Log, Stardate 54342.1: The creature is still at large on the planet surface. While Mr. Spock continues to lead a research party I am currently at work with Mr. Scott on an Acme Pressure Cooker for our lab, for when the creature is finally apprehended.
Captain's Log, stardate 54342.3. The strange occurrences that have dogged the landing party since our arrival at this planet have led me to believe that the creature is in some way directly responsible for them. Mr. Chekov and I have both been declared fit for return to duty, though Dr. McCoy has entered in his medical log that he feels we should be kept under observation. Mr. Spock has constructed a device which he suspects should be able to counteract the creature's incredible speed as follows: We have placed a dish of birdseed out in the open, with several signs pointing to it. The dish is atop a cleverly concealed trap door, which will open when any weight falls on it. The creature will then travel a slide, eventually being deposited in a cage constructed of sheets of transparent aluminum. We will then be free to analyze it at our leisure. Meanwhile, I have forbidden all beaming down to the surface of the planet except on my or Mr. Spock's direct order.

Captain's Log, supplemental. The plan failed. The creature was indeed lured by the birdseed, as expected. It sped to the dish, consumed the bait, and sped off without setting off the trap. Mr. Spock is as puzzled as I, and has begun tests to discover the flaw in the design. I have sent out three search parties to see if we can box the creature in, one headed by Mr. Sulu, one by Mr. Chekov, and one by Sociologist Xontel.

Captain's Log, stardate 54342.8. Sociologist Xontel has been temporarily incapacitated. In pursuing the creature, he and his men somehow managed to cross the place where Mr. Spock's trap was set just as he completed the corrections to it. The trap was sprung, and all four of my men were suspended for a moment in mid-air, puzzled, just before they fell into the cage we constructed. We are now trying to release them with phasers, as the lock was inadvertently smashed by the impact from Sociologist Xontel's foot as he fell. I consider this a major setback. Mr. Spock considers it "fascinating."

Captain's Log, stardate 54343.4. In an all-out attempt to stop the creature once and for all, I have had a phaser rifle beamed down from the Enterprise. The creature has behaved in an extremely cunning manner, yet I am unsure whether this is a sign of actual intelligence. Lt. Uhura has been unsuccessful in her attempts to raise Starfleet Command. Meanwhile, Mr. Scott informs me that our dilithium crystals are deteriorating at an alarming rate. He has juryrigged a system that will prevent the decay for a time, but it is imperative that we find new crystals soon.

Captain's Log, supplemental. Mr. Sulu reports high energy tricorder readings from an area of the planet in which the creature has not yet been sighted. He has taken a small party, including Mr. Spock, to the high-elevation spot from which the readings emanate. I have begun to analyze the creature's movements. It seems to travel consistently over a set path. Perhaps we can corner it in a tunnel it seems to pass through frequently.

Captain's Log, stardate 54344.7. Mr. Sulu has located a cache of ACME dilithium crystals atop a high cliff. Regretfully, while collecting them, the edge of the cliff broke off, and he and Mr. Spock plummeted several hundred feet to the ground below. Strangely enough, they both survived the fall with no more than raising a cloud of dust on impact, although they did pass the chunk of rock on the way down and ended up completely buried. A rescue excavation has commenced, and they should be safe shortly.

Captain's Log, stardate 54344.9. Mr. Spock has beamed up tothe ship with them to assist Mr. Scott in their installation, as he foresees compatibility problems. Back on the planet's surface, Mr. Chekov led seven men into the tunnel in an attempt to capture the creature in transit. A loud BEEP, BEEP was heard, and Chekov aimed the phaser rifle and commanded his men to spread out. I wish to state for the record that I would have acted similarly, and that Ensign Chekov should in no way be held responsible for the unfortunate circumstances arising from the unexpected appearance of an old Earth-style freight train. He has been beamed back up to the ship with minor injuries.

Captain's Log, stardate 54345.1. Dr. McCoy has beamed down with a hypo containing a mixture of kyranide, tri-ox compound, Scalosian concentrate, a theragen derivative, and some other items he found in unmarked containers in Sickbay. By injecting a small amount into each member of the landing party, I hope to be able to deal with the creature on its own high speed terms.

Captain's Log, supplemental. The latest experiment to deal with the strange creature has failed. As Dr. McCoy was injecting a measured dose of the compound, it abruptly appeared behind him and uttered a loud BEEP, BEEP! Dr. McCoy, understandably flustered, accidentally pressured in the entire contents of the hypo into his arm. A full security team is in pursuit of him, waiting for the effects of the drug to wear off.

Captain's Log, stardate 54345.2. I have ordered the landing party transported back to the ship. The new dilithium crystals have been successfully installed. On my responsibility, the ship is preparing to engage main phasers to attack the creature, which continues on its semi-erratic course across the planet's surface.

Captain's Log, supplemental. This is a warning to all other starships that may pass this way. Do not approach this planet! The illogical events occurring here are too much to overcome with simple science. If you have heard the events transcribed in the rest of this log, you will learn that this creature is nearly undefeatable. We channeled full ship's power through the phaser banks. Theoretically, the creature should have been destroyed; however, the energies were too much strain for the ACME crystals. The full force of the phasers backlashed over the Enterprise, engulfing her completely. At first, the only noticeable effect was a complete failure of all systems save emergency gravity and life support. Then a web of black lines spread through the Enterprise's superstructure. Next, the ship began breaking up, piece by piece, falling through the atmosphere to land on the surface of the planet. When the ship had collapsed entirely, my crew was left hanging in space for a short time, and finally each of us began to fall to the planet below. We have no theories on how any of us survived, but every crewmember has reported nothing more than a sense of uneasiness, followed by the realization that they were several hundred miles up in the air, a sinking sensation, and then a gradual drop: first the feet, then the body, and finally the head, usually wearing a resigned expression of perplexion. We are attempting now to communicate with the creature in the hopes that it will prove intelligent. Perhaps we can communicate our peaceful intentions to it. Mr. Spock has constructed a crude rocket launcher from the wreckage of the ship, and with this we hope to send the recorder marker up into space, where hopefully someone will find it. Captain James T. Kirk, of the United Federation of Planets, Captain of the Starship Enterprise, recording.

THE END
(With apologies to Trek fans everywhere).

Spielberg Knighted

Submitted by COMM Richard Hewitt

From: Scoop@relay.sonypictures.com

SIR SPIELBERG: Not every Yankee genius gets a sword on the shoulder from England's Queen Elizabeth II, but director extraordinaire Steven Spielberg will. The British Consulate announced he'll be awarded an honorary knighthood on January 29th at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. Although British citizenship is normally required to be knighted, honorary knighthoods are sometimes given to non-English achievers. Spielberg's spokesman says he's "honored and humbled." Up next for E.T.'s creator: a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 2001.

Episode II Shaping Up

Submitted by COMM Richard Hewitt from

Sci-Fi Wire, a news service of the Sci-Fi Channel.

Star Wars: Episode II producer Rick McCallum told the official Star Wars Web site that the film is approaching its final length.

Editor Ben Burtt and director George Lucas are cutting the film together at Skywalker Ranch in Northern California.

The film is currently in its rough-cut stage and is scheduled to undergo at least four more cuts before final. "There's a lot of work to do," McCallum said. "You gothrough various emotional stages when reviewing this footage. At times, you have to face the truth of what you didn't get and what you hoped for. The second stage is that you're amazed by all the things you did get that you didn't even think you got. And then the third stage is that you see certain things are infinitely better than you could have even imagined.

"The length of the film is determined by what you feel works," McCallum told the site. "Sometimes you have something that works at three hours. Sometimes it takes eight hours to tell a story, which is what's great about television. Creatively, if Ben and George decided that Episode II had to be three hours long, then we'd have to make it that length. But that's hard to sustain if you don't plan it that way up front."
