Hot Track Of The Week:

This is a song currently in the Top 50 that I'll feature each week.

French Montana featuring Swae Lee - Unforgettable

Yeah, so... It's not too often a song debuts all the way up at #29 on the JT50. Here's the situation: I didn't just fall in love overnight with "Unforgettable," the latest single by Moroccan-born, New York-based rapper (and one of the last popular acts on Puff Daddy's Bad Boy Records record label), French Montana. I've liked this song for a couple months now. But just this past week - to my utter horror - I realized that it wasn't on my chart! (They say the mind is the first thing to go...) This has only happened one other time in the 21+ year existence of my personal chart. In 2007, "Give It To Me" by Timbaland (featuring Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake), one of my truly favorite songs of that year, did not place on my personal chart. In that instance, I didn't discover that I never actually charted it until I was compiling my 2007 year-end chart and, after trying to figure out why "Give It To Me" wasn't on the list, I discovered I hadn't charted it! In an effort to not repeat the same mistake, I'm debuting "Unforgettable" high on the chart this week. I really like the cool, World Music vibe and nod to French Montana's Moroccan heritage that it showcases. We'll see what its fortunes on the chart end up being.

Spotlight Song Of The Week:

This is a song from the Next In Line List that may be making a debut sometime within the next few weeks.

Louis Tomlinson & Bebe Rexha - Back To You

Typically, when a boy band breaks up, at least one - maybe two - of the members goes on to have solo success (Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson from The Jacksons, Donny Osmond from The Osmonds, Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, and Johnny Gill from New Edition, Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre from New Kids On The Block, and of course, Justin Timberlake from 'N Sync...oh, and J.C. Chasez, too.) But it's rare that every former member finds solo success...for varying reasons. A few long to return to precious anonymity. Some stay in the music industry behind the scenes as a producer, songwriter, or in some other capacity. Still others parlay the musical success into a career on TV. Or, perhaps most cruelly, others are deemed "not talented or popular enough" to even be given a shot at a solo career. None of these apply to the former members of One Direction. Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, & Niall Horan have all segued into success as solo artists. Their former groupmate, Louis Tomlinson, is the latest One Directioner to dip his toe into the "solo career pond" with prospects for success running pretty high. Though it's not his first solo single (he collaborated with Dance producer, Steve Aoki, earlier this year on a well-received song), it's already looking like it's going to be a breakthrough success for him. "Back To You" is a duet with singer/songwriter, Bebe Rexha, who has written some of the most popular songs of the past four or five years...but has had trouble scoring a hit as an artist, herself. It's a nice little ditty about a couple that keeps breaking up because they're not good for each other. But, they keep getting drawn back together for inexplicable reasons. We'll see if it finally appears on the JT50 in the coming weeks.

Blast From The Past:

This is a song from the past that I'm featuring to bring back memories of yesteryear!

Al Green & Annie Lennox - Put A Little Love In Your Heart

This week's Blast From The Past takes us back to 1988. I'm about 99.9% certain that I've featured this song as the Blast From The Past before. But, it's my chart and I'll feature it again if I want to...feature it again if I want to...feature it again if I want to... (Sorry. Just a little Lesley Gore/Melanie Martinez-based humor, there. :P ) This is a song with a message that I can get behind on any day of the year, but more so after the events of last week. "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" was originally co-written and recorded by Jackie DeShannon in 1969. (Incidentally, DeShannon's other big hit, "What The World Needs Now Is Love," was also in the running to be featured as the Blast From The Past.) Nineteen years later, legendary Soul artist, Al Green, and British Soul singer, Annie Lennox, teamed up to cover "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" for the soundtrack to the Bill Murray holiday comedy, Scrooged. Green & Lennox's cover managed to peak at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart (DeShannon's version peaked at #4). The song ended up being the last Mainstrem Pop hit of Al Green's storied career. Annie Lennox continued on with her solo success in the early 90s before reuniting with Eurythmics partner, David A. Stewart at the end of the decade for a long-awaited reunion album. One last thing... People seriously need to stop acting like hateful d-bags. Being kind and choosing love is so easy. Choosing to hate and be fearful takes so much work. When given the choice between the two, always pick being a decent humand being over being a total ass hat.
