Hot Track Of The Week:

This is a song currently in the Top 50 that I'll feature each week.

Khalid - Young, Dumb, & Broke

"Young, Dumb, & Broke" is the second single from American Teen, the debut album by teenage R&B singer/songwriter, Khalid. Despite what the song's title might make you think, it's not about young people who are broke, making bad decisions and doing stupid things. It's more of an ode to young love...and taking the opportunity to just be young and in love "while we're young, dumb, and broke" before it's time to go out into the real world and we have to act like grown-ups. It's actually kind of refreshing to hear a teenager sing about real thoughts and feelings that teenagers have. I really like this laid-back track. After the surprise mainstream success of the album's first single, "Location," I'm glad that "Young, Dumb, & Broke" appears to be doing well on the charts, too.

Spotlight Song Of The Week:

This is a song from the Next In Line List that may be making a debut sometime within the next few weeks.

Macklemore featuring Kesha - Good Old Days

About five years ago, many of us were just getting to know Seattle-based independent rapper, Macklemore. He - along with producer, Ryan Lewis, who was billed along with him as part of the act - would go on to become one of the most popular acts of late 2012 and 2013. But then, the Grammy Awards in early 2014 happened and Macklemore beat out favorite, Kendrick Lamar, and almost overnight, a backlash started in full force. Personally, I also believe that the release of his pro-LGBTQ anthem, "Same Love," as a single in Summer 2013 had already started the erosion of his R&B and Hip-Hop fanbase before the Grammys happened. After a new album in 2015 failed to generate much of a buzz, I was all but convinced that he was done. Thankfully, I was wrong. "Good Old Days" is the second single from his newest album - following up the super-inspirational single, "Glorious." The song, about enjoying your youth and not being too afraid to live your life while you're still young, before looking back later in life and realizing these were the "good old days," is a collaboration with Kesha. Because of legal action involving her record label boss, Dr. Luke, Kesha had been out of the spotlight since 2013 until earlier this year...kept from releasing any new music and having collaborations with other artists allegedly blackballed by Dr. Luke. I shudder to think what sort of deal had to be struck to allow her to not only be a part of "Good Old Days," but to release her own new album. At any rate, "Good Old Days' is a pretty good listen. Look for it to hit the Top 50 soon!

Blast From The Past:

This is a song from the past that I'm featuring to bring back memories of yesteryear!

Uncle Sam - I Don't Ever Want To See You Again

This week's Blast From The Past takes us back to 1998. "I Don't Ever Want To See You Again" was the only hit by R&B singer, Sam Turner, aka Uncle Sam. Coming into the industry around the time when popular artists where being given their own record labels to run, Uncle Sam was one of the first artists signed to Boyz II Men's record label. In fact, "I Don't Ever Want To See You Again" was written by the quartet's very own Nathan Morris (the one with the flat top and glasses) and Michael McCary (the one with the deep voice) appeared on the song in a spoken word interlude. A tale of a man who comes upon a letter from his best friend, telling him that the man's girlfriend is leaving him for said best friend...or, should I say, FORMER best friend. Of course, this prompts the man - in the form of Uncle Sam narrating - to declare that he doesn't ever want to see his girlfriend again. Can you really kick someone out who was already leaving you for someone else, anyway? At any rate, a letter from the man your girl is leaving you for is a pretty cold way to end a relationship. But, it translated into industry chart gold for Sam. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and #2 on the R&B Singles chart in 1998. Sam's next single, a cover of Bad English's hit, "When I See You Smile" for the popular TV show, Touched By An Angel, didn't have the same level of impact on the charts...although, I liked it! After not being able to notch another hit on the charts, Sam retired from the music industry and is now a pastor of a church in Atlanta. I still today enjoy listening to his one hit song every now and then.
