Sermons of the Great Awakening

Two men whom God greatly used in the "Great Awakening" of the 18th century were George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards. Whitefield's messages were characterized by a loving compassion for the souls of men—he often preached with tears, warning his hearers to "flee from the wrath to come," urging them to turn to Christ. Edwards, greatly used in revival in New England, was best known for his sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Some of the sermons of these men are featured below.

“Evangelical Repentance”

by John Colquhoun

True repentance is a missing ingredient in much present-day preaching, resulting in a false gospel, and many deceived "converts" who have never repented, and know nothing about Biblical repentance. What does the Bible say about it? This excellent book by John Colquhoun sets forth the Biblical teaching on "repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ" (Acts 20:21).

Messages on the Cross of Christ

by C. H. Spurgeon

"But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." (Galatians 6:14)

Three Crosses

Paul deplored the practice of the "carnal" Corinthian believers of "glorying in men" (1 Corinthians 1:11-16, 3:21). In this message on Galatians 6:14, Spurgeon sets forth clearly what the Christian—whether in the pulpit or in the pew—should glory in exclusively: the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ!

What did Paul mean when he wrote, "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God . . . But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness, but unto them which are called, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18,23-24)—and, "For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2)? These messages by C. H. Spurgeon exemplify Paul's teaching in these verses, and are as much a blessing today as they were over 100 years ago when they were used by the Lord in the conversion of thousands. A sinner saved by grace never grows tired of hearing "the old, old story," which not only comforts, assures, and edifies, but is the highest motivation for greater love, holiness, and service to Him (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 2 Corinthians 5:15, 1 John 4:7-11,19, Titus 2:13-14, Galatians 1:3-5)—the Crucified One, who is now enthroned in glory at the right hand of the Majesty on high as Lord over all! (Philippians 2:5-11, Acts 2:36, Romans 14:9, Hebrews 1:1-3)

“The Doctrines of Grace Do Not Lead to Sin”

Spurgeon expounds Romans 6:14-15, teaching that, though some may have wickedly perverted and turned the grace of God into lasciviousness, the true doctrine of the free grace of God does not give license to sin.
