We sure love our mysteries down here in Florida, so when I read the reviews of Tilda Swinton's new movie, The Deep End, I was all geared up for a great mystery movie. Turns out there's not much of a mystery at all, and the thrills are very muted in this odd, but very affecting picture that was filmed on the shores of Lake Tahoe. It's really a family film that's a little rough around the edges. Ms. Swinton is outstanding as the mom who will do almost anything to protect her chicks from the creeps of the outside world. And during a 2-day period while her Navy Captain or Admiral or something husband is sailing his carrier in the Pacific (and is never seen in the film), she has to handle a number of creeps because of a violent series of events. I won't spoil the plot, but this is very well acted, if a little unbelievable. Definitely worth renting. And Ms. Swinton should be a big, big star.
Go Tribe, indeed! After the intitial euphoria of the 11-1 start, reality has set in, and the boys stand today at 17-17. Are they better than 5-16? Yes. Are they as good as 11-1? No. Will they win the division? Probably not, unless they swing a big trade or two.
What's to like about these Indians? I like Baez so far, Sabathia is pitching like an overweight sophomore, and Finley looks like he's still got a few games left. Drese needs to go back to the minors, and Colon--who freakin' knows? I'm glad they bit the bullet and unloaded Wil Cordero. He was useless last year and looked even worse this year, and I think loyal old soldier Charlie Nagy needs to go, too. Let's hope he retires honorably. Soon. And takes Brady Anderson (totally washed up) with him. Ellis Burks is a hitting wonder when he's able to play, but with Bradley hurt and Matt Lawton looking more and more like a huge mistake, I wonder who's going to help Thome carry the load later on? That Alomar trade is starting to smell even worse than it did when they made it. Travis Fryman has to be better than he's shown so far.
Final analysis: the Golden Era of the 90's is over. Welcome back to mediocrity.
Here's something I lifted from Terry Pluto's weekly newsletter:
Something to think about:
The Tribe’s 1990 Opening Day lineup was:
Mitch Webster CF
Jerry Browne 2B
Candy Maldonado LF
Cory Snyder RF
Keith Hernandez 1B
Chris James DH
Brook Jacoby 3B
Sandy Alomar C
Rafael Santana SS
Bud Black P
Rafael Santana?
Browns Report!
The Browns drafted William Green from BC (I actually saw him play against ND this year) and a whole bunch of linebackers. Unfortunately, they still haven't picked up enough good linemen or receivers. I don't know . . .
