THE PLACE

Iligan City is located in the southern part of the Philippines, in the island of Mindanao. It is hailed as the industrial center of northern Mindanao, having more than 20 major and minor industries. The backdrop is contrasting, though, the place is blessed with rich natural resources. Waterfalls and natural springs are easily accessible. Foremost of which are the Maria Cristina Falls, Tinago Falls, Mimbalot Falls and Timoga Springs.

PEOPLE AND CULTURE

The rapid industrial growth of Iligan had brought an influx of migrants not only from neighboring islands and cities but as far as Luzon. The Tagalogs, Bicolanos, Boholanos, Siquijodnons, Cebuanos, Davaoenos, Hiligaynons, etc, have added more color to the already rich cultural diversity of the place.

Descendants of the original inhabitants of Iligan, the Higa-onons, displays there cultural heritage thru dances, usually performed during fiestas.

Iligan being a gateway to Marawi City, a major Maranao population center, has attracted Maranao traders into the city. The Maranao's brass works, malongs, tobaws, etc, can easily be acquired at Iligan Market Area.

ILIGAN ARTS SCENE

Most of the artworks of Iligan based artists are reflective of the rich cultural diversity and natural environment of the place. Its influence may be evident on its subject, color, form and/or idea.

However, these artworks may not be seen and the dynamism of Iligan visual arts movement may not be felt by its immediate populace, since at present, there is no legitimate gallery where the local artists can exhibit their works. The artists had tried exhibiting on the streets, at a beach resort, on a house decor/furniture store, at a garden, a coffee shop and on a hotel lobby, all in an effort to elevate the level of art consciousness in the community.

The Iligan CyberGallery, therefore, tries to provide a venue in the hope of bringing these artworks, not only to the Iliganons, but as well as the general public.
