Why the Goddess? Do we really need another
divinity, another religion, something else to worship?
If there is a male God, shouldn't there be a female Goddess? Isn't that what creation
is about - the male and female energies coming together to create new life?
Without the female there can be no new life. If human beings were created in the form of their creator,
and there is only a male God, in whose image are women created? If children
look to their partents to model behavior for them, and we live in a culture
where this is only a male God, where's the model for the Feminine? How can
girls learn to be women without the Goddess? Being brought up in a society that embraces an all-powerful God who made man
in his image is very validating for men. Feminine images, on the other
hand, aren't so positive. EVE, for example, was responsible
for the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Paradise was lost because of a woman,
a snake, and an apple. Supposedly all women suffer in childbirth
because of EVE. And LILITH, Adam's first wife who left him because
she would not lie beneath him during sex, was considered a demon
and rarely mentioned. This view of woman as evil, as scapegoat, as temptress and
seducer is not very validating for most young women. Who wants to be
a scapegoat? Who wants to be responsible for paradise lost? Who wants to be
a demon? Prior to patriarchy and the male God there was a female Goddess, whom
all the peoples in the acient world revered and honored. During this time
women were respected, they were judges, lawmakers, officals, priestesses, rulers,
landowners, this is when women had power! Finally, a strong female rolemodel. It is important for women to reclaim the Goddess, not just one Goddess, but all Goddesses. The more Goddesses we know, the more we can celebrate, honor, and respect the diversity of the Feminine. If we celebrate, honor, and respect the diversity of the Goddesses, then we can do it for ourselves! Why the Goddesses? Because we are women, diverse women, who need
to see the Divine Femminine reflected back to us-from ourselves to our
Goddesses and back to ourselves. Because all women are Goddesses, and
it is time we saw ourselves that way!! Journey now into the garden
and commune with the Goddesses. Listen to their lessons. Find
your path to wholeness through them.
