The ground forces of the Caliphate rely heavily on being able to call out large numbers of trained and semi trained reservists at short notice. Approximately half the standing forces of the Caliphate are reserve units undergoing training and refamiliarisation. These forces are organised in the same manner as the regular forces but usually have older and perhaps obslete equipment.
All males of age are conscripited into the armed forces by the "devshirme", a selective draft that directs recruits into the arms of service that best suits their attributes. The Navy and Regular ("Qapu Kullari" - court slaves) forces are maintained by this manner as certain recruits during processing are marked for permanent service. This can be appealed on compassionate grounds but is realatively rarely granted and those abusing the system are punished with the utmost severity. Service as a regular is for 20yrs and as a conscript for 2yrs (Earth standard). Conscripts are recalled to the colours every 2yrs to undergo 2-3 months of refamiliarisation training. This does not include large scale exercises that may also call out some reservists at any time.
The Caliphate also maintains some mercenaries on its rolls. It has been
rumoured that some are even NRE special forces but this is unconfirmed. The
Mercs are of two types. The Ulufeciyan ("salaried men") who are non Moslem.
Typically New Sicilian but also Russ, Scandanavian, Dutch, Georgian and
even Armenian. The others are the Gureba ("strangers") who are foreign
Moslems usually from the IC but also some Afghan Mujahdin (provided they
aren't fighting the IF) and the Caliph-oghlan ("Calph's children"). The
Oghlan are IF units that defected to the Caliphate. There is no going back
for them. The Caliphate always brigades a unit of Ulufeciyan with a similar
unit of Gureba. This allows one unit to be keeping an eye on the other.
Cema'at Orta (Infantry division)
An armoured division replaces the armoured battilon with a Divisional
Recce Regiment and each Infantry Regiment with an Armoured regiment. They
also include a Cebeci ("armourers") Battalion
Recce Regiment
Extra assets at corp level are usually independent Siphai and Cema'at
brigades which are organised in exactly the same way as respective
regiment. However there are also....
Boumpardai ("bombard" - Heavy Artillery) Orta (brigade size)
The Djanbazan emphasize inflitration, stealth, and surprise from
concleament. May always be deployed hidden and in Attack/defence senarios
where the Caliphate is on the defence then they may even deploy in enemy
deployment area and activate first.
Other formations.
Delis Battlion
These are members of the Caliphates "staff college". They are the sons (usually second son) of the aristocracy who are taken from their families at age 5 and educated trained byt the Caliphate. Most are destinted for civil service but many military officers are graduates. To hold high command (Division or independent brigade or above) you must be one of the Muteferrika.
These appear on the battle field to give the cadets battle experience.
Always regular but test morale as veteran. Always in the best tanks (ibn Saud)
Derbentci ("fort troops")
Troops that man the fortified areas of the Caliphate. Similar to the
Cema'at in organisation but double the artillery and very few vehicles and
mobile troops.
Mehteri.
These are support troops that provide logistics and front line medical
aid. Typically units are referred to as battlions but they really do not
conform to this sort of structure. A typical Mehteri has 5 sub commands
each of roughly 150 personel.
Mobile hospitals that carry out front line surgery and care. Facilites
are primative when compared to those of the Major powers but none the less
adequate.
Responsible for the setting up and maintaince of field camps these troops
are particulary concerned with tenting/accomodation and sanitation. In
battle they form dressing stations on the front line carrying out initial
triage by treating those they can (and sending them back to battle) and
passing to the Ocak those in greater need. The obviously dying are left in
their care.
Transport units equipped with heavy trucks with some forklifts and even
cranes. If they are serving alongside Gonulluyan then they will ferry these
troops to the combat zone.
These are basically military police although interestingly they do
include Mullahs who act almost like morale officers in other armies. The
Mullahs not only provide religous instruction but also ensure that the
troops entertainment and conduct conforms with the teaching of the Koran.
These units not only arrest but also punish the troops.
Perhaps the most important support troops of all. These are the Kalifates catering corp. The cooks take great pride in their work and a good Corbaci is a valued resource of any commander because with good and varied food the troops morale can be kept up, particularly among the Gonulluyan large numbers of whom tend to desert if things in camp are not to their liking. Accusations of looting and pillage on civilians are usually the result of Corbaci units scrounging for those little special things for their kitchens.
