Is this your first Great Dane? There are a few things you need to understand when considering the addition of a Great Dane as a family member... When considering a Dane as a pet, you need to realize that this dog will be large ~ I'm not being funny. Although the puppy will weigh 20 to 30 pounds when you pick it up, it will continue to grow for two years. As early as six months, the dog may be able to reach counter tops, block walkways, and generally be annoying if he is not properly socialized. These are indoor dogs, cannot withstand cold winters or hot summers out of doors. Please understand that these are family members. Would you make your child sleep outside or leave them on a chain for hours? I hope not...

A full grown Great Dane can weigh 100 to 170 pounds, they can stand on their back legs and look over a 6 foot fence. This means that sleeping in your bed, standing in the kitchen or even leaning on you (Danes love to lean), can present a problem. Think of the worst case person (the sweet little old lady that lives next door), What will she do if the dog leans on her or worse?

Other considerations are the rudiments of training, just remember, the dog will ultimatly be large, treat him like he is already big - starting the first day. I cannot stress enough that if the dog is allowed to do "it" once, this is a licence to continue, say no to couches, beds, laying in doorways, etc. Fortunately, Great Danes are very easy to train and are great around kids and other pets. Spend time with the dog, isn't that why you are getting him in the first place!
