Common misconceptions on what we do
| I often get asked exactley what we do when we investigate a location that is rumored to be haunted. People often think we see things like in the movies, well that couldn't be farther from the truth. When we investigate a location that is supposed to be haunted we enter as if it were not haunted, we look for all signs that could point to a "natural" cause, such as recording a EMF spike around a electrical panel etc.. Let me give you a step by step how an investigation takes place. When we arive at the location we generally meet with whoever gave us permission to be there in the first place (generally these people want to walk around with us and see what we do). We then go about the task of looking for good places where a spirit would be likely to hang out, in this step we start locating devices that would give us any "false" readings (i.e. panels, t.v.'s conduit in the walls, light ballasts, etc..). Now it is time to get out the equipment and do a "sweep" of the building, we usually break into teams to cover a greater area in less time. Once one team finds an area that seems to be "active" we then focus or attention to that area documenting it in greater detail.
People always think when we go out we see apparitions and people walking around with no heads etc... I am not saying it can't happen, it's just very rare to see an apparition, usually what we see and hear is not in any means scary. We have seen things like door handles move when noone was there to move them, hear things like raps in walls or voices in areas noone is in. When we collect most of our evidence we don't even know we recorded it until we review the tapes and get film developed, we can see things in the infrared camcorder, & we do pick up temperature drops and emf readings while investigating, so there are ways to know if you are around a spirit, but the best tool a ghost hunter can posses is an open mind and using your senses. You will usually be able to feel if something is around but not always. |
