Critic of paper currency running for mayor
The Associated Press
Another man wants to be mayor.
Lawrence Rey Topham, who ran unsuccessfully for Salt Lake City mayor in 1999 and 1995, filed last month to run again.
In the past Topham has campaigned to stop the use of currency and return to using gold and silver. He filed a paper with the City Recorder's Office last month titled "The Constitution and East Temple Street," noting that the city did not receive gold or silver coins from the LDS Church when it sold Main Street between North Temple and South Temple.
Topham joins one-term incumbent Rocky Anderson, former lawmaker Frank Pignanelli and businessman Molonai Hola in the race. Topham ran for president as the Independent America Party candidate in 1996. He ran for U.S. Senate in 1994 and for governor in 1992. In 1999, he received 27 votes in the mayoral primary.
