Fennel (foeniculum vulgare)
History:
Fennel is a familiar Mediterranean cooking herb. Historical
tradition reputed it to give strength and courage. The ancient Egyptians
believed that they could prevent the plague by using a mixture of fennel seeds
and barberry.
Uses:
Both the seeds and leaves are used. Fennel
helps with gastrointestinal problems such as acid stomach and heartburn, ulcers,
hiatal hernia, excess gas and overactive digestive systems. It has some use in
the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism, both taken internally and rubbed
externally on afflicted joints. Fennel helps to stimulate appetite, and is
useful to cancer patients after chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
Cautions:
No known problems, except for individual
sensitivity.
Always:
Be sure of the identity of any plant before you use it. If a preparation makes you sick or gives you a rash, don't use it, and throw it away! If your condition does not improve, see your doctor. Be sure to let your physician know EVERYTHING that you are taking!
