THE RACHEL
Rachel's cradle is made from the most porous red mahogany I have ever seen The wood had been used as the crating material to ship US Army ammunition. The wood was free so I thought it was a good deal. BEWARE OF FREE WOOD! It has taken me three years to coax a cradle from this material. And I ran out of this wood which can not be obtained so I had to add a little Luan and a little Honduran here and there. You may have noticed that this cradle has no bottom. (now wouldn't that be hard on the baby) Most of my cradles have detachable bottoms(designer's preference) This cradle is really wide and the mahogany bottom I made warped. I tried backing it with plywood. That warped too. Sounds like building Swamp Castle from Monte Python's Holy Grail doesn't it Rachel. I then decided to weave a rope bottom, but my friend and mentor Dr. Mike McGarvey had a better idea. Mike is an expert canner so the bottom will be canned
