I have four lovely daughters and Parkinson's disease As I began to get
shakier and shakier, the youngest daughter
became more and more concerned about the making of her cradle. Fortunately
at the time I was enrolled in a woodworking class at Southern Utah
University and I needed a project to do. I designed and made this
oak pedestal cradle. The stiles were a bear to cut out even with
an overhead router and gluing the double doweled ends was preposterous
The cradle is finished in provental oak and sprayed
with a polyurethane finish. One unique feature of the cradle is that
the basket lifts off the pedestal and sits on floor where the design
of the end pieces allows the cradle to free stand and rock. There is
an extension that swings out from the bottom of the cradle when it is
in its free standing mode which acts as a stop as well as a handy way
for the mother to rock the cradle with her foot.
