Notes: There were some great matches at the state tournament. The long awaited rematch between Seth Wright and Cyler Sanderson went Wright's way as the Payson star put Sanderson on his back twice. Sanderson also received an OT scare by Spencer Dinkins in his match for third place.

At 112 fabulous freshman Jake Swenson solidified his claim on the top spot with a dominating performance at state including a first round pin of previous #1 Keaton Romero. I wasn't sure what to do with Josh Burnett, who placed third at the state meet but wasn't actually defeated on the mat. I had to give him the ranking over a tough Flint Ray, the 4-A champ, based on their previous meeting.

Note: In some cases a third place wrestler might be ahead of a second place wrestler if the two wrestlers didn't meet. This was the case in several weight classes.

The 215 pound weight class was one that had the biggest shake-up. Skyler Stephens survived a tough field of wrestlers to win his second straight title in 5-A. He got his biggest test from tough Kevin Freestone of Jordan. Sheldon Holgreen was shocked by Jon McNaughton of Wasatch at state opening the door for first year phenom and all around physical specimen Jan Jorgensen to surge to #3 at the weight. Mark Collard, who placed third in 5-A, stays ranked. Garrett Elliott avenged his earlier season loss to Lott to make the 4-A finals but his injury default to Matt Ah You left him with a silver medal. Ah You gets the #2 ranking. He was actually unbeaten at 215 pounds, but had a few losses at 275 pounds. So all in all, Stephens gets the nod for his second straight title and overall consistency.

Zach Elliott looked good in his final with a tough win over Peterson of Delta. Cheney Haight who also wrestled Elliott tough at the All-Star dual gets the #2 ranking for winning his third straight title. Remember his first title was at 112 pounds and 135 pounds last year. Craig Mock, who also lost a one point match to Elliott wins the 5-A title and the #3 spot in the Super Rankings. Clint Monsen and Casen Eldredge close out perhaps the toughest weight class of them all this year with the final two spots in the rankings.

Another fabulous weight class was 135 pounds and Cody Burdett gets the nod with his OT victory over Steve Robertson of Timpanogos. Burdett has two wins over 3-A champ Tyson Thompson, ranked #2, but it is hard to ignore Cody Sweat, who placed second at Reno but was knocked off by Thompson in the 3-A semi-finals. Robertson was an eyelash away from a possible #2 ranking. If he would have beat Burdett, Thompson would have moved back to #1 based on his state championship title and a win over Robertson earlier in the season.

The 275 pound classification was all Billy Green but had plenty of great wrestlers. Green got his biggest scare of his season from Rob McConkie of Jordan. Green escaped in sudden death to win this exciting semi-final and then got past superb athlete Jason Speredon of Granger to win his championship. Speredon and McConkie matched up better with Green than Dallin Norton, but Norton has placed higher than McConkie in some tournaments as has Mark Freeman the 4-A champ who split his two matches vs. Norton. Daniel Hola, who lost in sudden death to Freeman, gets a deserving ranking in a very good 275 pound class.

Cameron Dansie fell victim to Jeb Clark 6-1 in another semi-final match which should have been a championship match. Don't worry fans, the coaches are working on at least seeding the region champions. Dansie maintains his second ranking. This was a tough weight in 4-A as Dansie got scares from Cody Hansen, a tough Logan grappler that didn't even place in 4-A, and Matt Chambers, Mountain Crest, who Dansie beat for third place. Kelly Kelsey of Payson placed second to Clark at both region and state. The other two spots in the rankings are taken up by 3-A studs Skyler DiStefano and Josh Ferguson.

Robert Sanders looked very good winning the 2-A title and maintains his second ranking behind McKay Sanderson, who dominated the 4-A competition with the exception of a 6-4 scare he received from Provo freshman Nathaniel Holt. Sanderson's only losses came from out of state competition. Lyle Evans was very impressive winning 3-A over Peter Rose of Wasatch.

At 171 pounds Matt Casperson stays on top with Mike Rutledge second. These two never met and don't have a lot of common opponents. I heard Anthony Turchetta beat Rutledge at the Wasatch Duals and gets the nod at third. Colt Bracken also has a legitimate claim for the top spot and was very strong winning the OW at the 2-A meet goes to #2. Layton's Ben Buckley is #4, with tough Tyrel Taylor of Wayne #5. Wrestlers like Adam Ledingham of North Sanpete, Sam Delahunty of Alta, Chuck Genereaux of Union, and Spanish Fork's Clint Weight all have legit arguments for being ranked, but I had to simply look at overall records and state tournament results.

160 was another pretty open weight but the Top 3 are very deserving there. But many wrestlers had good arguments to be ranked but consistency and top state performances gave the final three spots to Morgan Jeppeson, Randy Callicoat and Wayne Duncan.

Overall, it was a great year.

Match of the Year: definitely Seth Wright over Cyler Sanderson. The score went well for Wright but the action and scrambles certainly didn't disappoint.

Final of the Year: Well, I'm going 1-A for this one. What a match of great action and will power as Rich's J.R. Kennedy takes down Tony Fabrizio of Duchesne in a wild scramble at 215 pounds. By the way most of the 4-A/5-A finals were snoozers, while the 1-A, 2-A and 3-A finals proved to be more competitive with enthusiastic crowds.

Most Controversial Match of the Year: Besides any match with my wrestler had to be the 152 pound 2-A final as the Monticello faithful booed loudly as their previously unbeaten Casen Eldredge lost to Clint Monsen of Millard. Monsen capitalized on an Eldredge mistake but Eldredge perhaps could have or should have scored two takedowns on the edge and was definitely the agressor during the match.

Undefeated Wrestlers: Well, hopefully I didn't miss any but this is how it went. Only two wrestlers in the state went undefeated this season: Luke Lofthouse of Mountain Crest went 43-0 and Troy Mortensen (Juab) went 45-0. David Beagley went undefeated in some reality because his only loss was to Keaton Romero at the All-Star dual. His final record was 42-1. His All-Star opponent Romero was a 112 pounder and the weigh-in allowed a five pound allowance for that particular bout. Three wrestlers lost perfect seasons as Kyle Klus (West), Casen Eldredge (Monticello) and Cameron Dansie (Timpanogos) were defeated in the state tournament. Zach Elliott did lose a match at the Reno Tournament of Champions final and Andrew Hochstrasser lost two matches, his Reno final plus an All-Star dual loss to Seth Wright, again over the official weigh-in limit for this exhibition match. Gerard Habibian (Dixie) and Shane Gustin-Miller (West Jordan)had only one loss each, that coming in the All-Star dual. Some wrestlers like Robert Sanders of San Juan (one loss), Payson's Seth Wright (two losses), Billy Green of Fremont (two losses, Chase Walker (three losses) and McKay Sanderson of Timpanogos (four losses) were all gained by wrestling out-of-state competition in some elite tournaments.

Fast Facts: 25 years ago Greg Robbins (father of Michael Robbins) and Ric Thompson (father of Tyson Thompson) won state championships. Both Robbins and Thompson made the finals this year but Robbins just fell short of a state championship falling to Uintah's Chad Young 2-0. Both Thompson and Robbins wrestle at Lehi while their fathers won titles at Skyline (Robbins) and Brighton (Thompson).

Josh Burnett became only the second wrestler I can think of to place third in state without actually losing a match on the mat. The other was Jed Ashworth of Spanish Fork who forfeited his semi-final match to Uintah's Ryan Siddoway as Spanish Fork's bus was late to the arena in 1983. Mark Smith of Cyprus was awarded second place, though the Cyprus heavyweight failed to show up at the correct time for his weigh-in. This happened in 1986.

P.S. I made some adjustments at 171 based on some head to head information I got from an e-mail. If true, I thought it was necessary to adjust those rankings. Thanks to my fans and even my critics for keeping me straight.

One final P.S. I do enjoy my e-mail and I got a very nice one from Richard Norman of Weber, who not only took state for the Warriors this season but was Academic All-State as well. He takes time to read the web page and wanted to remind me that his father took state in 1979 (Garry Norman) as well as Uncle (Terry) for Box Elder. I do remember the Norman twins. He also was kind enough to nominate Seth Wright for Wrestler of the Year and thank me for my efforts. This is the kind of young man wrestling can be proud of!
