Preece's 2001 Final Super Rankings for High School Wrestling

Final Super Rankings for 2000-01 Season

Rankings Compiled by Brian Preece

In some cases the state tournament clarified rankings, in ohter cases it just muddled the waters even more. What to do at 119 pounds? I kept Caleb Hardy in the rankings despite not placing at state because of a shoulder injury. He might have a case for a higher ranking, even a number one ranking. This weight was the hardest to rank, but since I do all the rankings I put Ryan Argyle number one. I have to have some prerogative for all my hard work doing this! But 119 was the most wide open class. Since Chris Abbott failed to make weight, I just couldn't justify a ranking.

The upsets at 130 pounds in 4-A and 5-A totally disrupted the rankings, but I had to go with the head-to-head matches at the state tournament. In some cases I might have ranked a wrestler that placed third in state instead of a wrestler that placed second in state if the two wrestlers didn't meet. This was the case at 145 pounds where I chose Sam Allen of Davis over Cody Fehlberg of Orem or a Kurt Badger of West HS. This was a tough call but Allen lost to McKell Sanderson of Timpanogos in a classic semi-final. At 215 pounds, I also ranked Nate Herrscher of Olympus. He met Caleb Love in the semi-finals and lost. He lost only one match all year long and beat Provo's Spencer Boone, who placed second, earlier in the seaon.

Josh Anderson survived a scare from Kimball Cluff, but Eric Wahlin gets the nod at 189 for his consistency. Gerard Habibian was slowed by pneumonia in January, but I still had to go with Anderson and Cluff who beat him to head to head. It would be interesting to see how a healthy Habibian would have stacked up against these grapplers. What a weight class!

And of course Skyline's Nui Luamanuvaie pulled off the biggest stunner of the state tournament knocking off undefeated and returning state champion Eric Freeman of Orem at 275 pounds. He's legit! He gave Timpanogos' Derek Peterson all he could handle losing 7-6. He moves up to #2 while Peterson gets the #1 ranking. 5-A dominates this weight class.

Another great weight was 160 pounds. Tanner Cowan wins his third title for Juab, but Nick Larsen went undefeated at 44-0 for Sky View. Sandwiched between these two stars and receiving a number two ranking is Mike Casperson of Pine View. Casperson's only losses were to McCurdy and a state champ from Nevada. Two time state champ McCurdy fell to fourth in the rankings, but he's a stud for sure.
