Behavior Modification Instructions

I currently work in a self-contained behavior disorders unit, in a school. When a student starts to have escalating behaviors there are certain instructions given to us that we are suppossed to follow. These instructional steps help to establish consequences for students who don't comply with the rules. These also are measures that we need to take before more extreme measures need to be taken, such a seat away, time-out booth, and then a call to the police.
  1. Remove attention from the student who is displaying inappropriate behavior, adn acknowledge other students nearby who are exhibiting the expected behavior.
  2. Redirect the student to the expected behavior with a gesture or verbal prompt, cite the classroom rule being violated, and be sure to acknowledge subsequent cooperation and displays of expected behavior by the student.
  3. Secure the student's attention and clearly inform him or her of the expected behavior, provide immediate opportunities for practice, and acknowledge the changed behavior when it occurs.
  4. Deliver a brief warning by providing an opportunitiy for the student to choose between displaying the expected behavior and experiencing a penalty or loss of privlege.
  5. Deliver the penalty or loss of privilege in a matter-of-fact manner and do not argue with the student about details of the penalty.
There are times when these aren't followed step by step. For example if the student throws sciccors at another student or teacher we immediatly restrain the student put them in the time-out booth and call the cops.
