The Chinese Zodiac

The Legend Behind the Chinese Zodiac
A long time ago, a meeting of all the animals of the world were called together. A goddess announced that a race would be held for the animals, and the top twelve animals would represent the animals in the Chinese Zodiac. The Rat, afraid of losing, went up to the cat and said, "You should take a shower the day before the race. That way, everyone will admire your beautiful fur."

"What a good idea," said the Cat. "I will." On the day of the race, the Rat went over to the Ox and said, "Hey, will you let me ride on your head? Then, I'll be able to see anyone behind us who is about to catch up to us."

The Ox agreed. They left together early in the morning and left the cat still waiting for her fur to dry.

"Ready, set, go!" said the Goddesses' assistant. All the animals burst into a fast run, all except the cat, who was still waiting for her fur to dry.

"You're on a great start!" the Rat said to the Ox. "You're in the lead!" The Ox was by far the fastest runner of all the animals, and near the end of the race, he was still in the lead. When the Ox neared the finish line, however, the Rat leaped forward off the Ox's head and ran ahead. The Rat had won!

"You tricked me!" roared the Ox angrily. However, the Cat's misfortune was even greater. The Cat had wasted so much time waiting for her fur to dry that she had not even made the top twelve animals.

The order of the animals was the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and last of all, the pig.

"You evil thing!" the Cat screamed at the Rat. "I am going to tell all my children about this. You will pay for your evil deed!" That is why, to this day, cats still chase rats.
