Chinese Knotting

The ancient art of tying Chinese knots was originally used for practical purposes. But as the art developed over the years, people began using the knots for decorative purposes. Today, Chinese knots can be seen dangling from keychains, hanging from walls, and fastened to rearview mirrors. Some people believe Chinese knotting brings good luck.

Several Chinese knots are usually tied on a single string that has been folded in half. Chinese knots are tied with colorful cord about about 1/8 inches thick. Traditional colors are yellow and red, but any vibrant color is suitable.

You can make your own Chinese knots. Here are instructions for two simple knots. More instructions will be added soon.
