Formal Ablution
Formal ablution of the deceased is a duty for everyone. Formal ablution
should be performed at least once. It is essential that water reach all
parts of the body. Formal ablution should follow a lawful way (sharia).
The Sunnah is to perform ablution 3 times. God forbids formal ablution
for the pagan. Also, formal ablution should not be performed to a martyr
of war as a sign of respect and honor. Formal ablution is not performed
to a miscarriage fetus if it doesn't show any signs of life. A miscarriage
fetus less than 4 moths should be wrapped in a piece of cloth and buried.
If water harms the deceased (for example if a person is burnt in an
accident or in war, then formal ablution with sand is enough).
The person performing the formal ablution should not look at the body
or touch it. He should wear gloves.
- The spouse could perform ablution to husband if nobody is present
to do the job.Ali (God bless him), washed the body of his wife Fatma, the
daughter of Mohamed (Blessing & peace from God be upon him) The
prophet told Aisha (God Bless her) if you die before me, I'll perform
formal ablution and shrouding for you. Recounted by Ibn Magah.
- The deceased should be put on a high platform during ablution. This
makes the job easier. Water should be neither too cold nor too hot. This
is to ensure accuracy.(God likes those who are accurate in doing their
jobs).
- Soap and water could be used during the first ablution. In the 3rd
and last formal ablution rose or camphor should be added to the water.
- If the deceased died during Omra or Hajj, there is no need for all
of the above.
- Mohamed (blessing & peace from God be upon him) said: "The dead
should be washed by the trustworthy".
- The person who performs formal ablution should trustworthy i.e. he
shroud not tell others about anything he saw or observed during ablution.
- The body should be dried so that the coffin would not be wet.
- It is unfavourable to comb the hair, trim the nails or to remove
hair from armpits and pubic area. Anything that falls from the body should
be collected and buried with the body.
-Any impurity that comes out of the body should only be removed. There
is no need for washing again.
Steps of formal Ablution in Details.
The body is to be put on a high board and it is to be undressed except
for the underwear. The intention of the person performing ablution is to
be from the heart.
The first Ablution:
With pure water.
1- Hands are washed 3 times, begin with the right hand.
2- Squeeze the stomach gently after placing the body in an up right
position in order to get rid of the waste inside the stomach. This step
is done so as not to ruin the coffin with impurities.
3- The person performing ablution could wear gloves and stand on the
left of the deceased and he should pour water on the body like ablution
for prayer. A helper aids the person who washes.
4- The rest of the body should be washed from any other stains like
pus or blood.
5- The person performing ablution should be careful not to enter water
inside the mouth or nose. He has to bend the body forward and pour water
on the head. use a piece of cotton to wash the teeth and nostrils.
6- Ablution should be done 3 times for each organ of the body starting
with the right hand and right side.
7- Water should be poured on the head 3 times. As for the women's hair
it would be brushed and washed with and water. Three plaits are to be done,
on in the right, one in the left and the third one in the front of the
head. This was mentioned by OMB Ateya when performing ablution to
the daughter of the prophet (blessing & peach from God be upon
him).
8- The right side of the body (both back and front) is to be washed
then the left side is washed. By doing this, the first wash is carried
out.
The 2nd Formal Ablution:
- With soap and water.
- The is to be washed with water and loofa (vegetable sponge) so as
to massage all parts of the body beginning with the right side. Then water
is be poured.
The 3rd Formal Ablution:
- Rose water or camphor is used. Repeat the same steps as the above
beginning with the right side.
- The body is then dried.
- Cotton is put in all the outlets of the body.
- Perfume or must is put on the body. (This was done to the prophet
(blessing & peace from God be upon him).
- Perfume is put on the head, the beard, knees, the feet, the forehead,
eyes, nose, ears, hands, and armpits.
- The head and the forehead are to be given special attention.
Also, wrapping the body in a shroud is a must. One garment
at least should be used.
- The price of the shroud should be from the capital of the deceased.
If a woman can afford the money for her shroud, then she must pay for it.
If she doesn't have enough money, then her husband should pay for it.
What is preferred in the shroud.
1- The shroud should be clean and it should cover all parts of the
body. Mohamed (Blessing and peace from God be upon him) says: "One should
shroud his brother well when he passes away".
2- Mohamed (blessing & peach from God be upon him) says,
"wear the white clothes that you have when someone dies because it
is the best clothes. Also, wrap your dead with white shrouds."
3- The body should be perfumed with incense, musk, or oud.
4- For men: 3 shrouds, shirt, and 2 wrappings. For women: skirt, napkin,
shroud, veil and 2 wrappings.
What is not favored in the shroud:
- To be bought at a high price. (i.e. to be expensive).
- To embroider any verse of Quran.
- Silk, for men, is forbidden.Aba Bakr El Sedeek stipulated,
that he be wrapped with the Friday prayer garment. When his daughter told
him that it was not new. He answered that the shroud would be contaminated
with pus in the grave anyway.
How to shroud the corpse.
-After drying the place of ablution, on the board, the body should
be turned gently. Then, best and loose cloth forms the 1st layer then,
it is perfumed. After that, the 2nd wrapping is to be used. Finally, the
inside layer or what is called the death shirt is to be put as the last
layer.
- The corpse is laid on its back on all the layers of cloth. The hands
are placed on the chest where the right hand is on the left hand. If this
is not possible then put the hands laid at the sides. Cotton is put on
all outlets to prevent impurities from coming out. The diaper should be
tightened exactly like a mother does to her infant.
The shrouds are to be tightened too. The right end covers the
left end and a wrapping is tied on the arms and the center of the body
to prevent the corpse from falling while it is being carried.
- The shroud should be longer than the body by 25 cm. The corpse is
tied with a band over the head and another at the feet. These bands are
loosened after burial.
Note:
There's no need for the formal ablution to those who die at Omra or
Hajj. These people are resurrected on Doomsday in answer to god's call. |
