10.5.00--DOCUMENTARY ON STIRLING CASTLE GIGS TO PREMIERE IN LONDON The following was submitted by Andy Cronk of Lonely Goat FIlms and co- producer of the documentary, A STIRLING PERFORMANCE, along with Deborah Hogan: A Stirling Performance was made in the summer of 1999 about REM's concerts at Stirling Castle, Scotland. What happens to a small Scottish community when one of the biggest bands in the world comes to their town? That was the idea that intrigued us. REM usually play big arenas in big towns and have no real effect on the places where they play. In a small town like Stirling, we knew things would be different. A Stirling Performance tells the story of REM's shows at Stirling Castle from the town's perspective. Everyone from bed and breakfast and pub owners to the man who runs the second hand book shop was affected and had an opinion. The film shows the preparation needed to get the concert off the ground at such a historic venue, the effect it had on everyday life and REM's reaction to Stirling. It also features some of the only recorded live performance of REM on this tour. It's a quirky documentary that gives a unique insight into the event. The film is being premiered as part of the Raindance Independent Film Festival on 17th October 2000 at the Metro Cinema, Rupert Street, Soho. Raindance is the UK's only film festival dedicated to independent film. Their website is www.raindance.co.uk. The official festival website will be up on 9th October at www.raindancefilmfestival.com 10.4.00--CITY PURCHASES MURMUR TRESTLE On October 3rd, the Athens-Clarke County Commission voted 9-1 to purchase the "Murmur" trestle for $25,000 from CSX railroad. The trestle has tentatively been scheduled to be used as an interpretive site along the Oconee River Greenway. According to Bertis Downs, R.E.M.'s general counsel, "We have great fans and we certainly appreciate their interest in Athens and Athens history. As supporters of historic preservation and quality growth, we're in favor of keeping the trestle. But this is something the fans have really taken on." The city government has plans for a fundraising effort to help defray the cost of the purchase. Details on this will be available soon. In the meantime, R.E.M. fan site Murmurs.com has already put together a fundraising effort to help the city pay for the trestle. Information on this is available here.
