The River

You wander like a drunken man,
Free of inhibition and careless of time.
You lead an involuntary, itinerant life,
From humble genesis to majestic conclusion,
Rewarding all upon whom you call,
With your watery conversation.

A fleeting, flowing messenger,
With a voice of crystal clarity,
The purity of your song of sadness,
Is there for all to hear.
Ribbon of life, untied and free,
A vibrant, living stream.

And as you voyage ceaselessly,
Green banners wave you onwards,
Tall willows mourn your passing from broad banks.
With bird, branch, bridge and barge,
You catch the tears from doleful clouds,
That fall, to help refresh and purify.

A host of watchful eyes drink in your beauty,
You pass and reach to touch so many lives.
A living, running, liquid link with nature,
Providing life and pleasure all around.
Light reflects and glitters from your surface,
As you flow onwards to the mighty sea.
