The Mirror

There is a mirror that changes the truth,
The poor become rich and the shy are aloof.
The ugly are beautiful, the old become young,
The guilty are freed and the innocent hung.
The learned are stupid, the foolish are wise,
The deaf, they can hear, and the blind regain eyes.
The fat become thin and the weak become strong,
The tall become squat and the short become long.

What good is the mirror, it cannot be used,
For if anyone tries they will soon be confused.
It crushes the vain and gives them their due,
It pacifies anger and makes old things new.
The glass is suspicion, gnawing and cold,
You cannot believe it unless you behold.
It has had many owners throughout time, it is true,
You may wish to use it; no reflection on you.
