Nykyisen populaarimusiikin kannalta ehdottomasti tärkein vuosikymmen on 60-luku. Silloin tehtiin suhteellisen lyhyessä ajassa valtavat määrät hyvää musiikkia. Tämä ei vielä sinänsä ole ainutkertaista, sillä esimerkiksi 90-luvulla onnistuttiin lähes yhtä hyvin. Se, mikä kuitenkin erottaa 60-luvun kaikesta muusta, on sen vaikutus. Se, mitä tehtiin nelisenkymmentä vuotta sitten, kuuluu yhä lähes kaikessa nykymusiikissa. Tällä perusteella 60-luku on helppo nimetä nykyisen populaarimusiikin tärkeimmäksi vuosikymmeneksi.

Ohessa on lista, johon olen koonnut mielestäni 60-luvun parhaita lauluja. Monilta bändeiltä ja artisteilta olisi voinut luetella kymmeniä kappaleita - oikeastaan olisi pitänyt luetella jo kokonaisia levyjä tai koko tuotanto - mutta olen yrittänyt pysyä edes jotenkin kohtuudessa, koska lähestymistapani on biisikeskeinen. Muutamat laulut menevät jo seuraavan vuosikymmenen puolelle ja toisaalta vuosikymmenen alkuvuodet puuttuvat lähes kokonaan, mutta näihin rajatapauksiin on hyvä selitys.

60-lukua sellaisena kuin minä sen käsitän, kesti vuodesta 1964 aina vuoteen 1971. Kulttuuriset vuosikymmenet eivät noudata kalenteria. 50-luvun vaikutus kesti niin kauan, että 60-luku pääsi toden teolla käyntiin vasta vuoden 1964 tienoilla, ja toisaalta 70-luvun voidaan sanoa alkaneen vasta vuoden 1972 vaiheilla. Vuosikymmenen alkuvuodet olivat jonkinlaista 60-luvun jatketta. Lisäksi 60-luku jakautuu vielä keskenään kahteen varsin erilaiseen kauteen. Vuodet 1964-66 olivat ns. svengaavaa 60-lukua puhtaimmillaan, kun taas sen jälkeen alettiin siirtyä hippitunnelmien kautta 70-luvulle. Siirtymä tapahtui niin sulavasti, että olen ottanut mukaan myös joitain lauluja 70-luvun alusta.

Historiallisesti 60-luku oli murroskausi, jolloin siirryttiin modernista ajasta postmoderniin aikaan, ja myös musiikissa luotiin perustaa kaikelle sille, joka on nykyään itsestään selvää. Tämän ajan musiikista voikin kuulla edelleen aidon innostuksen ja uutuudenviehätyksen, kun monet asiat tehtiin ensimmäistä kertaa. Tärkeintä on kuitenkin se sanojen tavoittamattomissa oleva tunne: tämän aikakauden musiikissa on oikeasti jotain maagista, jotain sellaista mitä nykyään ei enää ole.

Tämä lista ei ole koskaan valmis. Tiedän, että siinä on puutteita, ja täydennän sitä koko ajan. On suuri työ ottaa yksi vuosikymmen haltuun kerralla, mutta sitä ainakin yritän. Ehdotuksia ja parannuksia saa lähettää. Jos tämä lista saa yhdenkin ihmisen kuuntelemaan näitä upeita lauluja ja kiinnostumaan 60-luvun musiikista, olen onnistunut tehtävässäni.
