Groundbreaking: New Library Begins
The current library building was completed in 1898 with a cost of $62,000 -- one third of which was a private donation. The gas lights were replaced with electric in the early 1900s. The Children's Services area didn't exist until about 1910. The elevator shaft replaced a circular staircase in the 1920s. The non-print collection began in 1946 thanks to a donation by the Burlington Rotary Club. Air conditioning was added to some sections of the library in the 1970s. The first computer entered the building in 1985. Over the last 105 years the various members of the library boards (charged with the care of the building that they own) have done their best to maintain the building in a safe and historically appropriate condition while adapting to changing technologies. It has been well-maintained like many of the older homes in the community. Therefore, the building is an asset in the architectural fabric of historic Burlington even though it is not longer the best fit for the library.
