For the first time in our remembrance, a Selma City Council member, Bennie Ruthless Crenshaw, has voted AGAINST repairing a sewer line problem in HER OWN WARD. A major sewage problem existed in Ruthless’ WARD 7 around Second Avenue. The Mayor recommended it be repaired because raw sewage was running on the ground-a major health issue. Every member of the Council voted to fix the problem EXCEPT CRENSHAW. We do not know if she hates Mayor Evans so much that she wanted to let sewage run on the ground in her Ward to embarrass him or if she has just plain lost her mind. Despite her vote against fixing the problem, the Council approved the repair.
The Alabama New South Coalition and the Alabama Democratic Conference apparently think that the law does not apply to them. State records show that Alabama New South Coalition (the Sanders group) has not filed required campaign finance reports SINCE 1999. Another political organization, the ADC, has not filed since 2008. ADC Chairman Joe Reed said the failure to file was an oversight. We think both the ANSC and the ADC insults the intelligence of voters by giving them ballots and telling them who to vote for. These organizations should obey the law if they want to stay in business.
A number of people on Lapsley Street DO NOT agree with Rose Sanders that the street should be renamed Boynton-Robinson Street in honor of Mrs. Amelia Boynton Robinson. Some do not want it renamed at all and others think there are other people are as deserving to have the street named for them. The City has a procedure for renaming streets. We urge the City Council to follow its own policy on this one. Obviously Rose Sanders is out for her own personal gain and publicity on this issue. We think Mayor Evans’ idea of a park to honor everyone who wants to be honored is a great idea and would stop all of the grandstanding on renaming streets. Renaming streets is a tremendous headache and costly for people who live on the street.
Speaking of the Sanders, they could clean up their own act in the building they own which houses the 12 Stone night club. Police have been repeatedly called to the place due to drug use, fights, weapons, and underage drinking. No wonder Chief Riley is recommending that the business license of this DEN OF INIQUITY be revoked. And, we think it is a disgrace and almost blasphemous for a joint like this to defame a biblical name like the 12 stones, which Joshua set up to commemorate God’s might in parting the Jordan River so the Hebrews could pass into the Promised Land on dry ground. The City Council is to hold a hearing on revoking the license of 12 Stone on August 26. We believe they should revoke the license and get if off Water Avenue or at least ask that the name be changed to something less offensive!
Is this strange? “Ex-Selma Mayor Praises Colorado Group’s Civil Rights Work” from www.open.salon.com by Roger Clendening. The article says in part: “He (ex-Mayor Perkins) was a recent visitor to the Front Range, invited to be the keynote speaker at a fund raising banquet for the Freedom Foundation, a group created by Anglos from Colorado whose work Perkins holds in high regard…Perkins said “they’ve earned my support and I’m here to support them” Comments like that are one reason that James Perkins, Jr. is no longer Mayor of Selma!
Interestingly, in the same article, cult members said they came to Selma because they were struck by the need and injustice they saw here including these: nearly half of Selma’s children live below the poverty line; the school district dropout hovers near 15%, almost double the national average.
HERE IS OUR QUESTION: WHEN THE Freedom Foundation came to Selma and saw all of the need, injustice, poverty, dropouts in Selma WHO WAS THE MAYOR when all of this was happening? None other than JAMES PERKINS, JR.
We continue to ask how HATE RADIO 105.3 can let someone like the liar Johnnie Leashore be on their station and expect to have any credibility in this community. We say again that someone as ignorant as Leashore is of standard English should go to the community college and learn to say a sentence with a proper subject-verb agreement. It is not his ignorance that concerns us as it is his continued lies. PAY THE MONEY BACK YOU STOLE FROM THE WATER WORKS LEASHORE!
