SELMA NEEDS A REBIRTH
11-01-07

After 7 years of dictorial rule by James Perkins, Jr., Selma is dead and desperately needs a rebirth. We commend Vardaman, Sanders, Jim Hodo, Mitchell, and others who realize that Selma is dead and stands in need of a Renaissance. We also commend them for understanding that city government CANNOT bring about that rebirth. Even spending $12 million dollars on such useless projects as a Tennis Clubhouse, movie theater, cameras to spy on people, the present city leadership can never bring about a rebirth in Selma.

In 7 years, Perkins has managed to:
          -kill the spirit of Selma
-foster all manner of division, disunity, dislike among our people
-spread a general malaise over the entire city

By keeping everything hidden from the City Council, the press and the public, Perkins has demonstrated that he is interested in only one thing - power and control. Coming from a matriarchal culture, Perkins has surrounded himself WITH INCOMPETENT WOMEN. Because they are incompetent, HE CANNOT ALLOW them to speak to anyone lest they say something he doesn't want the public to know. Other than to say "hello", they are strictly forbidden from giving any information to certain council members. This fosters a spirit of distrust throughout city government.

By destroying the police department and causing almost all of our experienced officers to leave the SPD, Perkins has left the city virtually unprotected. Crime is prevalent everywhere while he talks about spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on the Wilson Building to house his beloved TrustBuild campaign staff. Who but Perkins would let someone as functionally illiterate as Jimmy Martin resign in June and still be chief creating havoc in the SPD through at least December?

We are pleased that citizens led by the EDA and Chamber are going to work to bring a rebirth in Selma. The Lord knows we need it and perhaps with this effort we'll get it! Selma will never recover from 4 more years of James Perkins, Jr., as Mayor.
