MUSINGS IN RIVER CITY...
9-13-08

The magnitude of the defeat of James Perkins, Jr. by George Evans (by more than 1,000 votes) demonstrates the city wide discontent with the Perkins' administration. Mr. Evans carried 9 of the 17 boxes in the city, winning both majority white and majority black boxes. In addition to Perkins, two of his four puppets on the City Council were also defeated. With all of the city money spent in Ward 8 by Perkins in the past 4 years, we thought that Janie Venter would win re-election. Time after time, Johnnie Leashore said publicly that he would be re-elected by the voters of Ward 6. When the final votes were counted, both Venter and Leashore had gone down in defeat. The leader of the Crenshaw 4, Ms. B.R. Crenshaw, barely escaped a run-off by 49 votes. It is clear to us that the people of Selma, black and white, want a major change in City Hall and city government.

This brings us to Mr. Evans, who received more votes in 2004 for Council President than Mr. Perkins did for Mayor. It is evident that Evans has a large following throughout Selma and an unprecedented opportunity to lead Selma to greatness. We are sure that Mr. Evans realizes the people voted for change - especially change in City Hall and in city department heads. We pray that he will be replacing most every department head in the city and that he will select competent people to head the departments. As we have said before, we do not care if these people are red, yellow, black, or white - as long as they are competent.

Mr. Evans will be appointing, by himself, every department head EXCEPT the City Clerk and the City Finance Director. These two positions are elected by a majority vote on the City Council and we expect both of these positions to be filled by individuals other than the ones who have occupied these offices the past four years.

It is possible (depending on the outcome of the President of the City Council race) that there will be 6 new members on the 9 member Council. Only Crenshaw, Williamson, and Randolph may be returning to the Council. We like the new Council members and expect great things from them and Mayor Evans in the next 4 years. At least, the 6 new Council members are people who think for themselves and will not automatically vote the way the Mayor tells them to vote on EVERY ISSUE - as the Crenshaw 4 did for the last 4 years.

SELMA HAS MANY PROBLEMS. Christians understand that these problems are spiritual in nature. We have a NUMBER OF CULTS IN THIS COMMUNITY - not just one or two - but numerous cults among both whites and blacks. We are encouraged that two of these cults are about to be exposed for their false and anti-biblical teaching. Once these materials exposing these false teachings are in print, we will try to get permission to put it on this website. Discerning people have long understood that there has been a cloud of spiritual darkness over Selma for many years. With the recent arrival of more cult members, this spiritual darkness in the city has become more pervasive. We trust that those who have ears to hear will hear what is being said to the city in this message. We believe God has given the city one last opportunity and much hope in the election of George Evans for Mayor.
