A source at the SPD told this website some interesting details about the chain of events leading up to the "safe crackers" being called in from Thorsby to access the evidence safe at Police Headquarters.
The source informed us that Officer Barnhill was once in charge of the evidence safe but when the Narcotics Unit was disbanded he was transferred to another unit. He had the combination to the evidence safe. When approached for the combination he stated that he was no longer assigned to narcotics so he didn't have the combination anymore. Thus the "safe crackers" were called. After the evidence safe was "cracked", Martin inventoried the contents. Supposedly the confiscated drugs were all accounted for but low and behold, approximately $6,000 (in cash) was missing that the records showed was in the safe.
This was suspected in the 2005-2006 Audit Management Letter. They stated that proper handling of the evidence confiscated from violators was not in place nor was inventory taken at the right intervals. Why inventory now? Could a telephone call from a higher source have directed them to do it? No, there was not an investigation before the safe was opened, BUT NOW THERE IS! Money, Money, who has the Money? Did it ever go into the safe? Whoever has it should be prosecuted just as those were in 1999.
Martin, this is another one of your screw ups. Perkins, you are just as responsible as Martin. You and Martin think you know so much but as these blunders are being exposed it proves you know very little. You both have brought our city's police department to its knees. By your supervision, or lack thereof, you have destroyed the SPD's moral and credibility and have unleashed a crime wave on the citizens that will take years, with you both gone, for this city to bring under control.
MARTIN LEAVE NOW! Perkins has ruined you. You are of no value to our city anymore. You have proven you can keep Perkins secrets but it has ruined your reputation!
