try to answer two simple questions posed by Councilman Dr. Cecil Williamson. (1) He first asks how much money does the Police Department have in its line item for Clothing--which no one seems to be able to answer and (2) If the City contracted for $74,000 and there is $65,000 in the line item or if there was $79,000 originally in the line item, how can there still be $12,000 available to pay for an examination for police officers.
The situation is: Personnel Director Valeria Jones is proposing the City spend $32,000 for one of her friends who runs Decisions, Inc. to draw up an examination for Police Captain and Police Lieutenant. This is $16,000 EACH for these exams! Which makes us wonder why they cost so much and what do other cities pay for similar examinations and why we couldn't use theirs or draw up and examination in conjunction with other cities and save on the costs.
Because Jones DID NOT have the $32,000 in her budget for these tests, she proposes to pay $20,000 from the Personnel Department and says CHIEF MARTIN HAS AGREED TO PAY THE OTHER $12,000 FROM THE DEPARTMENT'S CLOTHING ALLOWANCE! We suppose Police Officers can just go naked if the Chief is able to promote some of his flunkies to the rank of Captain and Lieutenant. The way MARTIN promotes HIS CRONIES without regard to any objective criteria is certain to bring more lawsuits against the City.
Anyway, that is when Councilman Williamson asks his questions. ESPECIALLY LISTEN TO HOW JONES DODGES THE ENTIRE QUESTION AND HOW MARTIN AND WILLIAMS DEMONSTRATE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. Obviously the Mayor does NOT know anything about any of this, and as usual Finance Director Cynthia Mitchell, who seems to be a good ole gal but in way over her head, simply confuses the issue by saying there is $65,000 in the Police Department's Clothing Line Item.
REMEMBER, THIS IS THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR CITY - NO WONDER SOME PEOPLE THINK SELMA IS GOING TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET!
