Welcome to the only website dedicated to the Class 144 'Pacer' units, which currently operate on the British railway system. I like them for a few reasons. Firstly, they are highly individual - aside from the 142 and 143 sister classes, the 144s are unique on the present system in having been constructed from bus parts. Second; due to their bus origins, they have no bogies and run on two axles per car, making for an interesting (i.e. bumpy) ride. Third, all 23 units have operated from Neville Hill depot in Leeds since their birth - they are one of very few classes of DMU to have had a permanent home - and as a result they are plentiful in the York area, which is my trainspotting base. Finally, they are so often neglected - not necessarily by Porterbrook or Arriva, but by rail enthusiasts. They seem to be regarded as aliens to the railway, and not in keeping with the traditional design of multiple units. As a result, I feel sorry for them. Being a Wycombe Wanderers fan, I have always supported the underdog, and so I decided to set up this website and thus come out in support of the cute, the silly, and the slightly ridiculous class of 144 Pacers.
