damn. [19 Jan 2005|05:45pm ]
Kenny, Jimbo, and I have a brand new radio show,
from 2:00-3:00pm on KCON 1230AM (as in, not FM).

For now it's mostly music (punk, folk, blues, rock, etc), but Kenny definitely plans to start up the chatter.
I am very nervous about this, but I expect there'll be more talk and we'll be much more prepared next week.

Hope some of you are out of class and in range next week.
Any requests?

LoC Drummer's death [24 Dec 2004|03:25pm ]
[ mood | cynical ]

As posted on the Leftover Crack site, their new drummer died two days after their show in Little Rock. This comes as no surprise to me, as I mentioned how fucked up he was to a couple of the guys in the Doomsday Cauldron the night we saw them.
Donovan, this is as close as we're ever going to get to being near the death of GG Allin.

I sincerely hope those dumb young bitches that were feeding the guy all those pills feel like pieces of shit and overdose themselves. Kelso, if you know who those little girls were, and I think you do, I hope you pass this on to them. They're accessories to murder, in my opinion.

Great Gatsby [11 Dec 2004|04:04am ]
It's been a crazy week.
I finished nine finals for seven classes.
I'm pretty confident about most all of my grades. Can't wait 'til they post 'em.

A couple days ago I found out the results about my second grant proposal.
I basically asked to do what I did last summer again this summer,
only I'll be hitting different states, and traveling alone.
The result: I got $2,000 to travel America again.
I don't really think I deserve it, but will savor it and hopefully will
have a worthwhile thesis when all is said and done.

I went to Ellen Howe's thesis presentation today.
It was very sexual and very blunt, and though I didn't agree with a lot of it,
it was good to hear and I appreciated her invite.

With screenshots, I hope to have saved Megan Moss $600.
I also hope to be repaid in $2 of authentic German gummy bears!

Tonight I went to Ricky Skaggs with my pops.
Seth Baldy sat a seat away from me and we both shook our heads in disgust
at how good those bastards were.
Ashley and Clare were there too, and those two, my pops, and myself
went to IHOP.
I stuck to my asshole guns - don't get me wrong, I don't like to have to do it,
but I have to do it. It's the only honest thing to do.
I've very particular about honesty now. It's a big thing to me.
A battle maybe? Chops is fighting with faith, I'm fighting with the
core values of honesty and trust and maybe by those two, truth.

Made it back here and received more requests to attend Katherine's b-day party.
I figured I'd swing by for a couple minutes, make an appearance in Kenny's
cool ass shirt of me (many people have said they have the same shirt, but "Fuck You" instead of "Obey" or that they would like to acquire one of these shirts. I'm very honored and would love to see my creepy ass face swearing at people all over Conway and elsewhere).
Got sucked into it. The party was pretty bumping. Plenty of people.
Took lots of dancing photos and some other miscellaneous ones.
Sang along to half of ...And Out Come the Wolves.
Met Lydia for the first time and realized she's Thomas's sister.
Thomas will be by tomorrow to chill and burn the Lucero double disk release of "That Much Further West" before he heads back to Atlanta Wednesday.
Talked a bunch with Jimbo about bitches and every other relevant topic of the evening.
Kenny was drunk, though he will probably deny this later.
Amanda was drinking and smoking. Disgusting and annoying.
Lauren was drunk and pretty out of it by the end of her evening it seemed.
I assume Jimbo escorted everyone home safely?

And I'm up at 3:45am running on a few hours of sleep like everyone else.
Guess that's all I have to record for now.
I'm gonna shower, I smell like a fucking ashtray.

It has recently come to my attention that my friend's creepy violent-threat-making ex-girlfriend has been stalking around in my journal. I am astonished by this intrusion of what I thought was a private network of my close friends and fond acquaintances, and now wish to clarify one of the regulations of this semi-public journal, which, until now, I thought was fully understood.

I figured this would be great because I barely have to study anything.
But all of these alternatives to tests mean that I have to take the iniative and get them done on my own time, which isn't so different from studying, I guess. My mind just ain't set right for it. I've only finished two so far.

1) I'm shooting a cannon out of the windows from the top floors of these big old houses with roof dormers. Running around the neighborhood escaping capture? Our cannon was shooting at other houses. Not sure how we indicated our rivals, or why they were, but this was a controlled attack.

2) I'm in a rush to get ready because Bill Clinton is about to come and hang out at the Vortex/Writers Club meeting tonight. This was extrememly dire, because, in the dream, I'd missed him the last time he came to a meeting two years ago, or I came in late or wasn't prepared.

There isn't even a meeting tonight.
And Jimbo was the one all tripping over himself with adoration for Bill JC.

JFK Reloaded [28 Nov 2004|12:23am ]
[ music | Screeching Weasel - I Wanna Be a Homesexual ]

I assume everyone has heard about the new game out, JFK Reloaded.

I caught a news bit about it on the television set.
This bit was followed up by an interview with the newscaster and two people by phone/satellite. One was Kirk Ewing (creator the of game & Managing Director of Traffic Games outta Scotland) and the other was a Democrat woman (a congressional rep, I think) whose name and state I missed.

Let me say I'm not trying to defend the game's being crude or distasteful.
It is most certainly terrible for Sen. Ted Kennedy, and he has said so, calling it "despicable."

The point of the game, according to Ewing, is that it is a documentary of the assassination. He is out to confirm the Warren Commission's Report which concluded Lee Harvey Oswald was the only assassin, and that there was/is no conspiracy involved.
This is all interesting to me, but it gets better.

In the news interview, the newscaster was trying to rip into him for the game not being appropriate for minors (he explained that he agrees; there is a disclaimer on the site).

The congress-woman has her say and goes into how it isn't right for there to be a first-person shooter where you can kill the president.
(I don't think it's fair to classify it simply as a FPS, since you're not going around wasting Nazis or the Russians or whoever, it's a single scenario where you try to accurately place two shots where historical documentation says they have to have been placed.)

Then the newscaster tries to lambaste him for trying to make money on a game that exploits such a sensitive issue.
He responds that's he sorry... that the US government has released a game for free which is intended to train its young to become soldiers.
He is cut off by the newscaster-- "oh, you're trying to make a political statement," and later, "that's not what we're talking about."

I thought that was amazing.
The best five minutes of news I've caught in the past year.

Here's a quote from America's Army, a subsidiary of Go

America’s Army is one of the five most popular PC action games played online. It provides players with the most authentic military experience available, from exploring the development of Soldiers in individual and collective training to their deployment in simulated missions in the War on Terror.

It doesn't get much more blatant than that.

And, to conclude, there is a lot worse out there than a physics-driven recreation of an assassination.
If you're going to complain about this game, have some consistency and complain about every other grotesque / gruesome / violent / sexual / inappropriate game on the market.
And have an opinion to back it up.

Falwell Plans for 'Evangelical Revolution' [10 Nov 2004|11:55pm ]
Tue Nov 9,10:43 PM ET
U.S. National - AP
By HANK KURZ Jr., Associated Press Writer

RICHMOND, Va. - Seeking to take advantage of the momentum from an election where moral values proved important to voters, the Rev. Jerry Falwell announced Tuesday he has formed a new coalition to guide an "evangelical revolution."

Falwell, a religious broadcaster based in Lynchburg, Va., said the Faith and Values Coalition will be a "21st century resurrection of the Moral Majority," the organization he founded in 1979.

Falwell said he would serve as the coalition's national chairman for four years.

He added that the new group's mission would be to lobby for anti-abortion conservatives to fill openings on the Supreme Court and lower courts, a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and the election of another "George Bush (news - web sites)-type" conservative in 2008.

"We all, for the first time, began to realize the potential of religious conservatives, particularly evangelicals, when something over 30 million of them went to the polls," he said, noting most supported the president and anti-abortion candidates, and voted to approve 11 initiatives across the country banning gay marriage.

Also, a decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Court allowing gay marriages "helped energize our people," Falwell said.

And when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began performing gay marriages, it "really caught the attention of people of faith in this country, and what we have been saying could happen actually happened," he said.

"The timing could not have been better. That, along with the abortion issues and the terrorism issue, helped us to get our people awakened."

While overseeing the coalition, Falwell said he would leave day-to-day operations of Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church — both of which he founded — to his sons Jerry Jr., 42, and Jonathan, 38.

Mathew Staver, founder of the conservative law group Liberty Counsel in Orlando, Fla., will be the coalition's vice chairman; Jonathan Falwell will be its executive director. Theologian Tim LaHaye will be the board chairman.

I guess I don't have anything to publicly say about the outcome of the election, besides how disappointed I am with the rest of America. Or, at least the parts that aren't the coasts.
I am not going along with all of the "well that's over, time to give in and be one with the republicans" talk.
Shit still ain't right. Shit is even more wrong now. You all can roll over, but count me out.

Tonight Seth invited me to the Kimya Dawson performance in the Burrow. I haven't done my homework or the Vortex flyer yet, but it was good to get out of the apartment for a bit.

David-Ivar Herman Dune was the night's shining star, possibly a new favorite. Bought his album and probably won't listen to it for a couple of years, but I bet it'll grow ripe and be wonderful when I do listen.

Kimya was very nice and spent a lot of time after the show drawing customized t-shirts and making drawings on posters she gave away. I asked her for my picture to portray how we're all feeling about what went down a couple of days ago. Her drawing was appropriate and the character says "Fuck this. Time to love harder."

There's a wisdom in that I'm not ready to accept yet.

Read before you go vote [28 Oct 2004|03:55pm ]

Here's an important heads up ...

Yesterday a friend voted early at a polling location in Austin. She voted straight Democratic. When she did the final check, lo and behold every vote was for the Democratic candidates except that it showed she had voted for Bush/Cheney for president/vice pres.

She immediately got a poll official. On her vote, it was corrected. She called the Travis County Democratic headquarters.
They took all her information, and told her that she wasn't the first to report a similar incident and that they are looking into it.

So check before you leave the polling booth, and if anything is wrong, get it corrected immediately. Report any irregularities to your
local Democratic headquarters. Make sure you pass this along to your friends ... hopefully this is all over the airwaves by tomorrow ...

The Texas voting fraud is for real.
I called the Austin office (Dem. Nat. Comm.) 512-637-1737
and they said that it has been happening a lot. They don't know why but the machines seem more "sensitive" this year and that every voter MUST check their summary as the presidential choice often rolls over to the republican choice if you vote straight

Micahel Moore [03 Oct 2004|11:45pm ]

[ music | smashing pumpkins - autumn ]

Thanks to everyone who showed up and participated in the Billionaires for Bush rally tonight, I think we can all agree how great of a success it was. Me, Matt, & Kenny all talked with this older fellow who definitely got a kick out of it and was glad we did it.

We'll be doing it again this Friday, 5:00pm out in front of the City Hall downtown by ToadSuck Square. Hopefully you can come out and have a good time and make a bit of a difference.

Moore, I think most of us can agree, tore it up tonight. Everyone could get down with his presentation, he wasn't just on a rant against Bush or conservatives or Republicans. I've typed enough about it already in instant messages and emails tonight, so I won't get into it, but I'm glad he came to UCA and I'm glad to have made it in to bear witness.

After tonight, and after the debate, I have a little gleam of hope that we might pull through Nov. 2nd.

I talked with George Harrison's sister tonight. Glad I'm not a huge Beatles person, or I might've made a fool of myself...

Was thinking about it a bit, maybe this is without enough thought, but... we're young, we're able-bodied, we're old enough to have power to change things for the better, we're old enough to be responsible for our activity or inactivity. I understand that people have commitments, people are drained from work, people don't have access to all the information in the world, and so on. But when UCA brings the information and presentation to you, for free, on a weekend, the least we can do is check it out, and better than that, participate in what's happening. Especially when our school is even offering all these alternatives ways to view the event in leisure around the campus.

Fuck, be a part of something, there's a world crashing around us. On our watch.

These weeks are flying by, but I don't think I'm doing anything.

I mean, things are being done, I'm going to classes, writing papers, reading all the time, all of that.

It's apparent in my growing piles of albums to listen to, books to read, thousands of mp3s to hear.

I'm doing things outside of school.
Playing shows to not many bored people, riding my busted bike often, stopping over at the Locust St. house every now and again.
Spend much time with Ashley, watching good and bad movies, eating bags and bags of corn chips with various quesos and salsas.

But what else?
I'm not making any ground on my thesis.
Not writing new songs.
Most of the poems written in Forms are group trash.

I know it all but can't find that motivation.

Japanese food tonight, at a city I haven't seen since 1999, may never see it again.

I've set my journal to display only the most recent entry.
This way I'll never know if I'm repeating the same tired observations.

And tonight I talked to Alison [09 Sep 2004|12:25am ]
[ mood | drained ]
[ music | Bruce Springsteen - Growing Up ]

Today I ate my last bagel. I need milk to keep my bones strong. I can't make myself go anywhere to get anything. My bike fender had been rubbing the tire for a week, so I tied it up with some twine, instead of going to Lowes and finding a screw to fix it. I'm not complaining, I'm explaining.

I avoid my readings for as long as possible, then suffer through them late at night when it hurts my eyes more to read in dull light than in daylight. Sometimes I say forget about the reading and I got to Ashley's, where I stay up much too late also and wake up way early to a kitten on my face. I'm not complaining, I'm explaining.

Practiced at Josh the Devil's tonight. It's good because I'm out and away and doing something, but it's all the same songs that we do every week and none that I've written. They say I'm an equal in the band but I know I'm not. We're playing Blank Gen this Friday and Vino's next Friday. Maybe you're interested in attending one or both?

I stopped by Jacksonville and made pizza after practice. I watched Bernie Mac spy on his family and wouldn't be surprised to find wires in my bedroom some day.

Missed a turn and stopped by Matt White's for what turned out to be over an hour when I planned on a couple minutes. Played him the songs we recorded, talked about my trip to Texas, him learning to sing, listened to Hayes Carll, found out Seth is no longer the station manager at KHDX (= tragic!), and played him "Clearcoat" and he forced me to sing, then he sang "If Only You Were Lonely" by the Replacements.

I realize now that we're all in ruts.
I think all of us.

We're stuck doing our thing and mostly it's misery or miserable and we can't wait until it'd over but then won't be any better either 'cause then it's fresh we're starting out to do it again differently.

Was reading this collection of Calvin & Hobbes comics put out by CrimethInc (given to me by Neekta) and that shit is right on in some parts. Everyone's so busy planning and padding for the rest of their life that no one takes time to live.

That right there is the point of this entry.

That, and, I've caught some speeches recently on CSpan at Ashley's. I was struck stupid listening to Arnold, and the next night I felt comforted by what Kerry had to offer alternatively, but it's all surface and no substance, and how different is it really?

The third night I watched Nader for damn near an hour, and I can't say much for his enthusiasm or ability to rile up a crowd (couple or three dozen folk?), but god damned if I don't feel I have to vote for him now. It seems the only honest thing I can do. I don't know if he'll even be on the ballot in Arkansas. And I of course know all about throwing away my vote and how important this election is, but how many of you Kerry default voters can look yourself in the eye and say you're honestly down with the dude?

(And tonight I talked to Alison who is no longer in NYC and who is missing Arkansas, but is seeing the familiar faces as a bridge. It's all harmless and to be expected. It's just too bad we weren't better friends, then she'd be justified in the end.)

This is all too much and it's too late, but it's been said and now I can't pretend to forget and never change.

spent the afternoon erasing traces of myself from the internet, after getting a dose of paranoia in my "Trusting Technology in the Information Age" course this morning. mostly just old ArkanSuck or band profile leftovers.

it feels like Friday today, an early beginning to a long weekend. too

[ music | Tom Petty - You Wreck Me ]

going to work on a site for KHDX for my technical writing course (awesome, and a relief),
listened to ben nichols in matt white's back yard, sitting with D and Dobbs,
officially met Hazel, Lily, and Bonnie (I think those three) who I've seen before at the Brew Ha Ha Mahar show and they live in the Log Cabin, worked the kissing booth, I believe one or more of them propositioned me previously to take part in a pornographic video taping session. I declined for some reason or other.
Nichols was sloshed tonight, collapsed after playing the new version of the Blue and the Grey, remembered Kristen in Seattle, and then broke the branch off a tree and collapsed again.
Was a good night and now I'd ought to get started on homework at midnight...

one day i'll post something deep and worth reading with lessons and morals,
but for now a short record of the night's events suffices.

Did you'se people know Jonathan Brandis killed himself last year?

And on a different note,
I guess it's funny to have Zack Morris hanging out at my place.

the best thing about all your friends using live journal is that they sum up all your shared evenings and you don't have to bother. 'cause you know i hate to bother.
it would have been funny if someone had a shirt on that said "i'm only here to see snoop dog, linkin park & korn"

What's a triumphant return? [13 Aug 2004|10:47pm ]
For anyone who doesn't know and who does care:
I made it back to Conway at approximately 9:33pm last night, and Jacksonville before noon today.

I'll post pictures, stories, recaps, and maybe a summary of what the fuck I've really just done when I find and feel the momentum.

Thanks to everyone that offered me a bed, couch, futon, or floor these last two or three months.
I hope to see every one of you again in less than six years this time.

Stopped outside Amarillo at a state park (Lake McClellan) the first night, went through Lubbock, El Paso and Juarez to end up at another state park (Caballo Lake) the second night, Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque the third night, a camp site at the Grand Canyon after that, and last night here in Vegas at Melanie's place after she and her sister Robyn took us on a tour of Vegas.

It's off to Death Valley and the rest of California from here.

Surprising Findings [10 Jul 2004|01:02am ]

Who likes the Misfits? [10 Jul 2004|12:06am ]
Was looking through my bookmarks and came across this interesting fellow I know nothing about, but thought some thing or the other was cool about his LJ way back when.

Read up a bit about his recent history, and it turns out he was supposed to play some show with Danzig. That's pretty cool? Right? I guess. But some scheduling errors or bands not having their stuff together forced the opening bands to forfeit their slots because Danzig wanted to start playing exactly when he said he would.

Sounds right on so far.
And, to show how much of a nice guy he is, Danzig even says that the openers could go on and play after Danzig's set.

However, after Danzig's set, the venue turns on the lights, Danzig's road crew immediately starts taking down the stage apart, and what do we know, the crowd probably evaporates.

Now it gets interesting.
Our LJ friend is pissed about how things turned out and decides to do something about it. He goes back to where Danzig is signing autographs and lets him know he doesn't care for his rockstar attitude. Danzig, offended and ego-bruised in front of all the people, gets pissed. Danzig says "fuck you, motherfucker!" and pushes the guy.

But is our boy going to take that? Fuck naw.
He rears back and unleashes an ungodly right hook and Danzig crumbles to the floor!

Now could you imagine being there to see that shit?
No? Well, brace yourself and enjoy... fightingx/danzig_beatdown.mpeg

The file is named danzig_beatdown!
Too funny. And I'm not condoning violence, but it's goddamn funny to see Danzig's buff ass get knocked to the ground in one hit like that. Man.
And the girl in the background, nagging, "kick his ass..."
Oh man, too much.

So Tired of Seeing the Same Thing. [05 Jul 2004|11:04pm ]
[ mood | near nausea ]
[ music | Murder City Devils - Every Shitty Thing ]

Only a day later.
Stomach still gets to burnin' when I think too much about it.

Can not wait to leave the state again and land in the great American West for a month.

I've never felt for anyone with a broken heart because I don't believe such things.
Forget about it. Think about something else. People only see pictures anyway.

When I lived in Japan, I was with a girl named Andrea.
I met up with her in Virginia last month. She's blossomed.

Growing up these days. and looking the other way.
Things were fucked up then, too, though.

[week spent visiting my hometown AFB, Atlantic City, Cape May, New York City, etc]

Mt. Marion, NY (family friends' place, Woodstock the city)

[week spent eating strawberry + nerds blizzards at Dairy Queen, building a back deck, playing pool at the local VFW]

Tarentum/New Kensington, PA (father's mother's childhood home)

[drove home through Pittsburgh PA, Wheeling WV, Columbus OH, Cinci OH, Louisville MO, Bowling Green KY, Memphis TN]

Lots more to say about everything, of course.
Can't really bring myself to say it though.
And I won't say it where it ought not to be said.

In other news, I shaved my head for the first time in my life.
Hopefully it's the last time for a long time, because it looks abominable.
