1897Victorian Football League (VFL) commences with eight teams: Carlton Blues; Collingwood Magpies; Essendon Same Old; Fitzroy Maroons; Geelong Pivotonians; Melbourne Redlegs; South Melbourne Southerners; St Kilda Saints. Note that St Kilda tried several nicknames over a period of years before settling with the obvious 'Saints' some years later8
1908Richmond Wasps and University Students enter the VFL10
1915University Students fold. Remaining players merge into the Melbourne Redlegs team.9
1916World War One forces Essendon Same Old, Geelong Pivotonians, Melbourne Redlegs, South Melbourne Southerners and St Kilda Saints to temporarily withdraw.4
1917South Melbourne Southerners and Geelong Pivotonians rejoin after their one year hiatus.6
1918Essendon Same Old and St Kilda Saints re-enter after two seasons.8
1919Melbourne Redlegs re-enter, the last of the teams to pull out during the war, after a 3-year break.9
1921Richmond Wasps become Richmond Tigers.9
1922Essendon Same Old become Essendon Bombers, since they were based near Essendon Airport.9
1923Geelong Pivotonians become Geelong Cats.9
1925Footscray Tricolours, Hawthorn Mayblooms and North Melbourne Shinboners enter the VFL.12
c1930South Melbourne Southerners become South Melbourne Blood-Stained Angels. Note that this was usually shortened to 'Bloods.'12
1933Melbourne Redlegs, tired of being called 'Fuchsias', become Melbourne Demons, aiming for a tougher image.12
1938Footscray Tricolours became Footscray Bulldogs and Fitzroy Maroons become Fitzroy Lions.12
1942Travel restrictions during World War Two force Geelong Cats to withdraw temporarily.11
1944With travel restrictions no longer an issue, Geelong Cats rejoin the league after the two season hiatus.12
1950North Melbourne Shinboners become North Melbourne Kangaroos, and Hawthorn Mayblooms become Hawthorn Hawks.12
1953South Melbourne Blood-Stained Angels become South Melbourne Swans.12
1957Fitzroy Gorillas become Fitzroy Lions.12
1982South Melbourne Swans relocate and become Sydney Swans.12
1987West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears enter the VFL.14
1990VFL changes its name to Australian Football League (AFL)14
1991Adelaide Crows enter the AFL.15
1995Fremantle Dockers enter the AFL.16
1997Financial difficulties force Fitzroy Lions — one of only three teams to have played all 100 seasons to date — to merge with Brisbane Bears. The resulting team was the Brisbane Lions.16
Port Adelaide Magpies from the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) become Port Adelaide Power and enter the AFL
1999North Melbourne Kangaroos become Kangaroos, without a location in their name.16
2011Gold Coast Suns enter the AFL.17
1995Greater Western Sydney Giants enter the AFL.18
