The Stages of Alzheimer's Disease and Their Symptoms

1st Stage of Alzheimer's Disease
  • An Alzheimer's patient will think that there isn't anything wrong with him or her. Denial will set in
  • Early signs of Alzheimer's may consist of mild forgetfulness, the inability to remember events or activities, and/or the inability to recognize family members, freinds and/or familiar places
  • Other factors may include, but are not limited to, mood swings, sudden outbursts, the confusion between day and night, and the inability to complete tasks
2nd Stage of Alzheimer's Disease
  • The short-term memory of an Alzheimer's patient will begin to decline
  • Simple tasks, such as driving, reading, speaking, and comprehending become slower
  • These patients may forget how to brush their teeth or comb their hair
  • The sense of tasting and smelling may become difficult
  • Since Alzheimer's patients are unable to do the things they once enjoyed, he or she may become aggrevated, anxious, restless, and/or aggressive
  • Alzheimer's patients may get the desire to wander away, wanting to be alone and secluded from others
3rd Stage of Alzheimer's Disease

  • During this stage, the memory of an Alzheimer's patient becomes completely impaired
  • The control of all body functions, such as the ability to eat and swallow, have been lost
  • This disease can cause respiratory problems, which can lead to pneumonia and the possibility of death
