Jeff Troxel Named National Guitar Flat-picking Champion for 2003

 

Jeff Troxel is an award-winning guitarist, composer, songwriter, and teacher with over twenty years of professional experience.  As a guitarist Jeff has performed with many notable artists, including Bobby Shew, Sunny Wilkinson, Frank Mantooth, Jack Reilly, Chris Merz, Ronnie Bedford, Bruce Escovitz, and James Naughton.  While working towards a Master’s Degree at the University of Southern California he was the guitarist, composer and arranger for two of USC’s premier jazz ensembles; ELF and Superaxe.  His 1996 recording Rising From the Plains was funded by grants from the Wyoming Arts Council and Northwest College and featured pieces composed for the ELF ensemble.  In 2001 he was awarded a Performing Arts Fellowship for composition from the Wyoming Arts Council.

 

Jeff’s ability on the guitar and musical versatility have led him to explore a variety of styles.  In addition to jazz, he brings a vibrant acoustic sound to the Scottish ensemble Glynfiddle.  He collaborates with other singer/songwriters such as John Hermann, in a variety of folk, bluegrass and contemporary styles.  A native of Wyoming he was selected the state’s 2001 flat picking champion and performs at regional bluegrass festivals.  His song Sarah in the Sunrise won an honorable mention from the John Lennon Songwriters Contest.

 

Jeff’s new recording Time for Moving On reflects a new direction in his playing and his career. Those who are used to hearing Jeff in a jazz setting or sideman role will be in for a surprise. Here is what he has to say about the music on this recording:
