This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. As a child David Pelzer was brutally beaten and starved by his mother. His mother was an alcoholic, and she was emotionally unstable. His mother wasn’t very kind to him. His mother played tortuous, unpredictable games. These little “games” she played with him were not always life-guaranteeing, but he had to learn how to play the games in order to survive. Some of the games left him scarred physically and emotionally. She considered Dave a slave; no longer a boy. She did not refer to him as a him, but she referred to him as an “it”. He slept on an old army cot in the basement, his clothes were torn and raunchy, and when he was allowed the luxury of food, it was scraps from the dogs bowl, or from the trash. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare played out behind closed doors. The kids at school teased him, and made fun of his clothes, and how he’d wear the same outfit everyday for a long period of time, and how it smelled like a dumpster. But throughout David kept alive dreams of finding a family to love him. This book covers in detail, the early years of his life, and the horrors of child abuse as well as acting as testament to the steadfast determination of one child to survive. David lived a tough childhood, and could never forget it.
