"I KNOW im not a punk You'd never see anyone who's hardcore punk on MTV. They're against all that. No one actually comes up to me and says "your not punk!" But if they did i'd be like, "i never fucking said i was!"
"Nick Carter wanted me to sing on his album but, you know, it's not really my thing," she says, laughing. "I mean, he's a cool guy, I met him, he's nice. But I'm sorry I had to turn it down. I'm not putting myself in the (teen pop) type of box."
"I mean who would walk around in a Fucking Bra?" (Talking about Britney Spears)
"I don't really care if my clothes are wrinkled or there's a stain on my shirt. Going out on the road, your clothes are dirty."
There was never any one person in particular growing up, but music that inspires me is stuff like Goo Goo Dolls, System of a Down, Matchbox 20, Green Day, Sum 41, and Blink 182. I LOVE the Goo Goo Dolls. When I sit there and listen to their CD, it really touches me and reminds me why I do what I'm doing. I'm like, "Oh my god, I'm so lucky to be doing what I'm doing." (on taliking about who inspires her musically)
I'm not telling! I don't like it. It starts with an R. I don't know why I don't like it. But I'm not telling. I think middle names are funny. They're pointless. Pointless! (on talking about her middle name)
girls can rock just as much as guys can
"If you're living a normal life, you have, like, a drawer with a few pairs of pants in it, and that's what you live out of. That's normal. I try to stay that way as much as I can."
"I was born with a love for music. I listened to a lot of different stuff; everything from Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill and Shania Twain to Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty, Third Eye Blind and Green Day."
"People say 'You're the new Alanis Morissette!' I'm like, shut up, no I'm not! Just because I'm Canadian and we both have long hair and like to rock out. I'm like this little kid who likes to jump around."
"I don't feel I have to act a certain way just because I may influence people. I'm not gonna change, that would be blasphemy. That's what I'm about - I'm about making myself happy!"
"Sometimes I get nervous, but then again I can be that wild kid jumping around being the loudest in the room. I mean everyone goes through different emotions."
“My friends still don’t know if they want to be a teacher or a doctor. When I talk to them, they’ll tell me they have exams the next day and I’ll be like, ‘Ha ha ha, you have a test.’ They’ll be like, ‘Avril, shut up!’”
“I hate sex-object music. It’s not real, and I’d never be able to sit in my room and listen to that kind of stuff. I have moms come up to me all the time and say thank you for wearing clothes, thank you for not being a Britney Spears. I’m like, ‘Puleeaase, no worries there’.”
"Every time I performed [my mom] was like, ‘You have to wear a dress and wear your hair nice.’ It’s funny now.”
“Before, when they’d say, ‘Oh my God, it’s Avril Lavigne,’ I’d be like, ‘How do they know me?’ Now it’s just like, ‘Don’t think—run’.”
“I wanna rock out on that record. You know, lots of screaming, loud guitars." (Avril on her next album)
"Nobody tells me what to wear. That would be bad and shallow."
"People want to see what's me, so why don't I just stand in front of the camera and wear what I wear?" "It's mean and stupid." (Avril on people calling her the "anti-Britney")
"I like to go shopping, but I never get to go. It's one part that sucks about this whole thing."
"I don't take it for granted. I'm very lucky." (Avril on getting her record deal)
"If I were to get a tattoo, I think I would wanna put 'LUCK' right across my forehead."
To me, writing is very important. I don't really wanna be up on stage singing something someone else wrote. wanna go up there and be like 'This is what I wrote, this is what I'm talking about.'"
"When you get to perform in front of a large crowd, it's the most amazing thing."
"I didn't make things complicated. Boys made things complicated. Life made things complicated."
"I miss being around my friends. They had prom yesterday. I actually wanted to go, but I didn't have time."
"What are her initials again?" (Avril on Britney)
"A lot of my songs are just true and honest and it's kinda re-freshing to some people cause it's not all like.... (laughs) 'Oh Baby' this and 'Oh Baby' that and it's you know kinda means a bit more to some people."
"Everybody knew back home, everybody knew me as like (qoutes with fingers) 'The singer girl,' 'Oh your the girl that sings!' I'm like 'Yeah I'm her!'"
"I wasn't even educated on what a you know a record deal was, all I knew was that you know if I sang for this guy and if he liked me that would make me be able to get... make me to be able to create a record and that's all I wanted, I wanted my CD, I wanted to have a CD and... so, it happend really fast"
"I totally wasn't expecting it. Today my manager said, 'Shouldn't you at least think about what you're going to say just in case?' And then when they called my name, I was like, 'Uhh.' This is my first video. It's crazy." (Avril on winning the Best New Artist award at the VMA's)
"I write all the time. That's how I deal with my feelings and emotions. If all of this came to an end, I would still write and sit down with my laptop and work on my songs. It's really important to me and I'm really excited about my second record."
"I´m not punk! I never said I was punk. And my music is definitely not punk. People are calling my music punk sometimes and I´m like, ´OK... I don´t think so´."
